Just in from Monday’s practice

October 8, 2007

Let me say, I’m tired of the heat. It’s so freaking humid that my notepad is drenched with sweat. Not that you wanted to hear that.

Anyways, Sylvester Croom said there’s a change in the status of linebacker Dominic Douglas, who sprained his foot against UAB. On Monday morning, he said Douglas is doubtful. At 6:50 p.m., Douglas’ status had been upgraded to probable.

As for the quarterback situation, Wesley Carroll, who grew up a Tennessee fan, stayed out on the field for some extra work to help correct the mistakes he made against the Blazers (he didn’t elaborate). He also did some extra routes with Lance Long.

As for the West Virginia game, it’s been set for 2:30 p.m. and will be aired regionally by ESPN on its Gameplan package.

And finally, Josh Riddell is scheduled for knee surgery on Thursday. He was at practice and seemed upbeat.

Not much news, which at this point of the season is a good.

Also, on Wednesday I plan on introducing a new weekly feature that should generate a lot of discussion. Civil discussion, I hope. I’ll have more on that later.

Little news from Croom this morning

October 8, 2007

Sylvester Croom didn’t provide a lot of information this morning, but did say he probably made a mistake in playing Michael Henig against UAB.

He also said it’s not likely that linebacker Dominic Douglas (ankle) will play against Tennesee, but he listed defensive back Chris Nance and defensive tackle LaMarcus Williams as probable.

And as he stated following the UAB game, Wesley Carroll will start at quarterback. But he did add Henig will likely play.

I’ll have more later tonight after practice.

I thought Dixon might receive POW honors . . .

October 8, 2007

But I was wrong.

Despite Anthony Dixon’s 152 yards and three touchdowns, the SEC offensive player of the week honor went to LSU running back Jacob Lester, who had 106 yards and the game-winning touchdown against Florida. He also converted two huge fourth-downs. I guess it’s hard to argue that he deserves the recognition.

The defensive player of the week was South Carolina’s Eric Norwood. Remember him? He’s the one that blocked the punt against Mississippi State that change the momentum.

Tennessee punter Britton Colquitt was tabbed the special teams player of the week, while Auburn’s Tyronne Green and Alabama’s Wallace Gilberry received offensive and defensive lineman honors, respectively.

And last but not least, South Carolina quarterback Chris Smelley got the freshman of the week award.

With all these honors, I’m stunned there isn’t individual awards for wideouts, linebackers and defensive backs. I think the SEC goes a little overboard with these. Sorry, Chuck (in case you are reading).
