Hogs win a shootout

November 17, 2007

Arkansas 45, Mississippi State 31.

I don’t have much time to blog, but Wesley Carroll and Jamayel Smith had career days, while Anthony Dixon set a school record with rushing attempts in a season, breaking James Johnson’s mark of 236.

Carroll was 29 of 51 for 421 yards and four touchdowns, but he also threw four interceptions. Smith had 10 catches for 208 yards and two scores, including an 80-yard bomb.

Defensively, the Bulldogs held Heisman favorite Darren McFadden to just 88 yards, nearly 60 below his average. However, Casey Dick had one of his best games, as he completed 14 of his 17 passes for 199 yards and four scores.

Your thoughts? Was the second quarter meltdown just too much to overcome.

Not a pretty half for MSU

November 17, 2007

After a nice first quarter where the Bulldogs led 7-0 after outgaining the Razorbacks 108 yards to 46, Arkansas goes into the break with a comfortable 24-7 lead.

Not a pretty second quarter for MSU, which totaled just 87 yards, 57 coming on its final drive that ended at the 8 as time expired. Not sure about that last play, though. With the clock ticking, MSU was going to have to score. Perhaps a sideline pass would have been better to save a few seconds on the clock. I don’t know, because the Dogs did have two timeouts remaining.

Of course, had Jamayel Smith, who had four catches 55 yards and a TD, gone down as soon as the catch, there would have been plenty time to call a timeout.

Total yards: Arkansas 241, MSU 195

A few notes
• Today’s official attendance is 55,185.
• On his second carry, Anthony Dixon set a single season record with carries, breaking James Johnson mark of 236 set in 1998. On the day, Dixon has 15 yards on 37 carries.
• Darren McFadden has just 39 yards on 13 carries.
• Casey Dick is 9-of-10 passing for 131 yards and three touchdowns.
• Wesley Carroll is 11 of 21 for 116 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Good morning from War Memorial Stadium

November 17, 2007

It amazes me everytime I come here an SEC team actually plays in this place. D-U-M-P!

Not much news to report on the MSU side. On the Arkansas side, though, there’s quite a bit. The buzz is that Houston Nutt is gone after this season. That was the discussion at the hotel, in the elevators, on my way to the garage for my car, on the drive over and walking up to the stadium.

It appears to be a done deal. It will be interesting to see if this distracts the Razorbacks or leads to a rallying point.

Now for a few notes . . .
• Representing the SEC today are the big boys – Commissioner Slive and Charles Bloom
• There are animal feces on the sidelines. Seriously. Not sure where they came from. I just know I didn’t do it. Again, seriously.
• It doesn’t look to be a sellout today.
• Felix Jones is dressed out. Still no word if the Arkansas running back will play.
