Today’s homework assingment: some ABCs

By Brad Locke

A. What is the one play that definitely defines this season?

B. At what point did you think this team was capable of getting a bowl bid?

C. Your team MVP and unsung hero.

And the best part about his assignment is that there is no due date.

    A. Bama pick six! When everyone else started to take notice!
    B. Kentucky game. I knew we would beat either UM or Bammer.
    C. Wes Carroll for MVP. Christian Ducre for unsung hero. He saved us in the Auburn game and the big 3rd down run versus Bama. Also stopped the fumbles for AD in Kentucky.

  2. bulldoggirl Says:

    A. Duh! Johnson’s 100-yard int return
    B. started to hope after Auburn game, but only really started to believe after Kentucky game.
    C. Titus Brown MVP. Carroll and Ducre for unsung heroes. Don’t think Ducre has gotten all the credit he deserves and who knew state would have to use use a true freshman to get solid QB play.

  3. bdog13 Says:

    A. I would have to say the FG at the end of the Egg Bowl.
    B. After the Auburn game.
    C. MVP-Coach Croom-these guys are who they are and where they are because of him. Unsung Hero-Keith Fitzhugh (he is all over the field)

Guys for the first time ever we had injuries work in our favor and I know that is terrible but if not for those injuries we might not be having these bowl conversations.

  4. maroondog Says:

    A. The pick-6
    B. After Kentucky
    C. MVP – Titus Brown Unsung Hero(s) – Offensive line – they really stepped up this year

  5. 2thdoc Says:

    A. Pegues’ pick 6 to start Auburn game
    B. Fumble recovery to start 2nd half of UK game(a sign of good fortune to come for our season)
    C. MVP- Carroll(true freshman to keep us in the season)
    Unsung hero- Ducre

  6. coldleftovers Says:

    A. The Pick 6
    B. My skepticism remained until after we beat UK
    C. MVP – Titus. Unsung- Carroll (amazing job, no one saw that coming)

  7. missstatedawgs Says:

    A. OF COURSE THE PICK 6 AGAINST BAMA
    B. THE KENTUCKY GAME
    C. WESLEY CARROL. EVEN THOUGH HIS THROWING FALTERED TOWARD THE END OF THE SEASON. HE PLAYED VERY SMART FOR A FRESHMAN BY THROWING PASSES AWAY AND SCRAMBLING IN THE POCKET. AND LETS ALL REMEMBER “HE IS A FRESHMAN”.

  8. theconquistador Says:

    A) Pick 6 against Alabama
    B) Kentucky game
    C) MVP: Brown/Carroll; Unsung Hero: Fitzhugh/Ducre

  9. msutim Says:

    A) Pick 6 against ALABAMA
    B) Kentucky game
    C) Titus – MVP
Avery Hannibal – I think being on the opposite side as Titus took away from what he did this year but he was incredible

  10. warbirdz44 Says:

    A. I’ll say stopping Ole Miss on 4th and 1. The Bama pick 6 was huge too but I didn’t want to pick the same thing as everyone else.
    B. After we beat Auburn
    C. MVP: Derek Pegues. He made several bone-jarring hits to break up passes, and several timely picks, and made the play of the game in the Egg Bowl.
Unsung hero: Wes Carroll. Who saw that coming?

  11. dadwithpride Says:

    a. Pick six vs. Auburn

    b. After Bama win

    c. Carrol. I sa some great plays by Titus, but I also saw him get tricked out of position several times. Carrol came in, started the season as a 3rd or4th stringer, yet has come in and done an admirable job.

  12. jaybirdms Says:

    A. The 4th and 1 against Ole Miss.
    B. After our comeback in the 4th quarter against UAB. I know it sounds kind of silly, but those of us in attendance were getting restless, and the team was able to maintian focus and pull out a hard-fought win.
    C. MVP goes to Derek Pegues. I would also say Brown and Dixon, but Dixon was too inconsistent and some teams handled Brown more than I expected. I think Pegues was the most consistent player throughout the season.

The unsung hero would be Wesley Carroll. Actually, I think he exhibits Croom’s personality on the field. No nonsense, stays calm, and does not get rattled.

  13. moorebs Says:

    A. The Bama pick 6 definitely….we were getting outplayed before that game changer.

    B. I Begin to think it after the Auburn win but didn’t BELIEVE it until we beat Kentucky.

    C. MVP: Offensive and Defensive lines. They had their weak moments but man did they show unbelieveable improvements this year.

Unsung hero: Wes Carroll without a doubt. At times (Kentucky game) didn’t even look like a freshman out there. He gives you reason to be excited about our offense in the future.

  14. jcdawgman18 Says:

    A. Pick Six
    B. The Bluegrass Beatdown
    C. MVP: Titus Brown Unsung Hero: Titus Brown; I think no one realizes just how much of an impact he can have. While he has received some recoginition, I don’t think it is nearly enough.

  15. southpanoladawg Says:

    A. The Pick Six

    B. UK

    C. MVP: Wesley Carroll – If he doesn’t come along, we’re stuck with His Furness and another 3, maybe 4 win season because I don’t think Croom would have given Riddell the shot he deserved. Turnovers kill, and Mikey is a turnover machine.

Unsung Hero: Jasper O’Quinn – Washington was getting torched on the corner opposite AJ a good portion of the year. Then O’Quinn stepped up and had a great game to win the starting spot, but got hurt in the same game and was out a while. He came back and locked down the other corner, which really helped strengthen the D.

  16. tebmsu97 Says:

    A. 4-1, it saved the season and defined what this team is all about, play for 60 minutes. The pick six against Bama was a very close second.

    B. Got to be after the UK game

    C. MVP – Carroll, he solidified the most important position on the field. Not always a brilliant parformer, but he was consistent and gaves us something to build around.

Unsung Hero -Ducre, Dixon got all the love but Ducre was a a big performer.

  17. imabulldog Says:

    A. I have to go with the Punt return by Pegues, only because it was do or die, the rest of the season and the Pick 6 vs Bama had gotten us to that point, but it was that play that will be burned in our minds forever. Aj’s play vs Bama is an incredible #2 play.
    B. I knew when we manhandled UK it was possible to go bowling.
    C. MVP’s-Derek Pegues-all the INT’s, the spark vs Auburn, overall play on D, huge pass break-ups in the Egg Bowl, and the punt return that electrified Scott Field and propelled us into a bowl. Titus Brown-one word “heart”

    HEROES- Carroll and J. Smith
Freshman QB- leadership like Ive never seen before, and he’ll only get better.
    J. Smith-made all the big catches that kept drives alive, and awakened our Off. at time this year when they needed it most

  18. imabulldog Says:

    GREAT ANSWERS GUYS

  19. Gregg Ellis Says:

missstatedawg, please, please, no all-caps. That’s brutal to the eyes. Thanks.

  20. dc31 Says:

    A. I would be crue and say the play that Henig broke his finger…but I actually like Henig and still think the he might be the best quarterback on our roster, but the play of the year is that incomplete pass at Auburn. If Auburn scores that touchdown at the end, I think the disappointment would have been too much to handle, plus we would have been 0-2 in the SEC.

    B. First Half of the LSU game…our defense and running game went toe to toe with them until we started turning it over. We just looked like a different team than in years past in the first half. Also, the score doesn’t correctly depict what actually happened in the game

    C. MVP – Titus Brown, Starting with UAB, teams had to change their whole offensive schemes around Brown. After the Auburn game, he faced constant double teams

  21. Gregg Ellis Says:

dc31, I like your answer to a. In fact, I think I agree with that more than any other. It’s one that definitely gets overlooked, but you have to wonder what the team’s state of mind would have been had Auburn converted and won.

  22. andieb731 Says:

    A. At the risk of sounding redundant….the Pick 2 vs. Bama (and their overrated JPW). Just look at the national attention it has garnered for us….not to mention $5000
    B. Was really proud of the D against LSU; even more proud of the offense against Auburn, but in the win against Kentucky. That was the game that our season was no longer a “fluke” (to everyone who isn’t a Bulldog). I knew at that point that we were going to win the Bama game.
    C. Dominic Douglas; Anthony Johnson; Adam Carlson. I’ve got to give it up for #10 (my hometown kid) who had some great defensive plays in every game this year. He does a lot but rarely gets noticed. Anthony Johnson who will always be remembered for the 100 yd. *cough* 104 yd. *cough* immaculate interception/TD, but I’ve noticed he always puts 120% into every play, and I appreciate his effort. Adam Carlson b/c redemption is oh so sweet! Just to add; (even though I am a student) I sit with my family at the game. We are 10 rows up behind the offensive bench. After EVERY TIME the offense comes off the field Wes goes to the phone (of course, he has too), and then he goes to EVERY offensive player on the bench, high fives them, and says something motivational. Whether we are winning or not. I have never seen him do anything negative on the side line. I never saw Mike do that either. Wes also gets my vote b/c he is a TEAM PLAYER not a SELF QB. But I’m not calling anyone out either so don’t take it the wrong way.

  23. andieb731 Says:

I really love Titus too! He is all heart! nuf said on that

  24. skydawg706 Says:

    A. I’d pic the UK game but after thinking it over after reading DC31 comments about Henig – I think he nailed it.

    B. UK game.

    C. Chosing just one is hard to do 1). Coach Croom (took a lot of hits), 2). all the offensive lineman that does not get the glory they deserve. 3). Carrol for giving the guys up front the credit for his suucess, 4). Henig always willing to give it his best — team first, me 2nd.

  25. Tom Says:

    A. Peques interception at Auburn (in fact, the entire defensive effort was huge).
    B. Auburn Win.
    C. Titus Brown-MVP. Unsung Heros – Offensive Line. Any offensive success we’ve had would not have been possible without their tremendous play. They were the most improved unit on the team….

Special teams were also much improved (but that would get us started on another thread).

  26. joekstewart Says:

    A) Anthony Johnson’s pick against Alabama. A sign of a great team is when your defense scores and robs points.

    B) I would have to say two games stick out. First, the Auburn game. I knew that the LSU game was a fluke. We had a good team and stayed with them until the turnovers got out of hand. Second, the games after beating a big team. When you win the big games it is hard to come back emotionally and do it again. We were 2-1. better than some of the BCS teams.

    C) Simple Coach Croom. I got sick and tried of hearing all the Croom bashing for three years. After the first season I saw a difference, I saw: discipline, determination, and character. All qualities of a successfull football team. No one pick State to be going bowling, no one thought State could beat Auburn, Kentucky, and Alabama in the same year; except Croom. He said it at Media Days, we are going bowling.

  27. 2thdoc Says:

Couldn’t help but notice Dixon wasn’t mentioned mostly due to lack of consistency. This team didn’t have big numbers or SEC 1st Teamers but played together with emotion when needed. This has to be credited to Coach Croom and his ability to gel the team. From the QB soap opera to the egg bowl turnaround field goal, he proved me wrong. COY Sly Croom.

  28. dawgbones Says:

All great answers. Some would say it is not possible but I agree with them all. This season and the above comments about it remind me of a Robert Frost poem “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood”. We definitely took the right roads and fate was with us.

  29. aladawg Says:

My vote goes to skydawg and farley for keeping these lively here

  30. aladawg Says:

keeping things lively, Cain’t spel untl the third cup

  31. 74goldenwave Says:

Pick Six vs Bama ( anything against ole miss is just considered
something that happens in an in-state rivarly
    game..nobody outside of MS cares..but
against Bama – Pontiac Game Changer

2nd Half Of W. VA. ( the team fought back from late 2nd qtr on.
Game it seemed as though this team
decided that it was going to fight
back and make a gallant effort to
    win..that same effort carried over
into the Kentucky game with a
    renewed game plan of throwing
    against the eight-man front and
    attacking A Woodson on defense.

Wesley Carroll The way that Wesley progressed
after taking over the starting job
    has been unbelievable..I credit the
coaching staff for not putting undue
    pressure on Wesley winning the
game by himself..and that is why the
running game was being relied on by
CC and staff…Wesley reminds me of
    having those Jay Barker intangibles…
He just has a knack of making
    positive plays..HE’S A WINNER!!!

  32. db33 Says:

    A. Pick Six vs. Bama
    B. Pick Six vs. Bama
    C. MVP: Wesley Carroll, Unsung Hero: Christian Ducre
