So I get back to Memphis around 10 p.m. on Christmas night, check into the Marriott on Perkins and then it hits me. There’s six cars in the parking lot. Well, eight if you count the two shuttle vans.
I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a hotel on Christmas. Maybe that’s why I’m surprised that it’s quite empty. However, the front desk manager was adament the place would start filling up today. We shall see. Anyway, there was plenty of hot water.
As for today, it’s pratice at Rhodes around 11 a.m. and a press conference at 2:45 p.m. Then it’s on to dinner somewhere. Not sure where, though.
Now for some Daily Journal links (nothing indepth, that’s coming later in the week).
• A notebook from Tuesday’s practice and what the team did for its Christmas feast.
• And in case you missed it, my annual Christmas Carols column that ran earlier this week. Based on a few emails I got, I realized a lot of readers don’t get my humor. Oh, well.

The carols are a thing of beauty! Don’t see you getting to cover Ole Miss or Bama anytime soon though.

those emails must have been from bama and ole miss fans. I found them hilarious.

Nice Hotel…very bad area in Memphis…watch yourself.
dawgx in Memphis.

Thanks, dawgx. It’s gated, so at least I don’t have to worry about my car being stolen, which was a problem in other areas of the city last night.

Nice hotel, BUT, I was @ the Memphis Marriott 2 weeks ago and got the side window of my Tahoe knocked out by vandals. Didn’t get anything though!

Where would be the best/safest places to park if we’re driving up for the game that day? Or, should I just hire a Blood to keep da Crips away?
The Liberty and Motor City Bowls have to be the most fan-unfriendly games in the post-season…….as far as muggings and spare change harassment is concerned.

Great job on the carols. I wish I had gotten before Christmas so I could have sang to my Ole Miss wife.
Watch your neck in Memphis.

Guys as far as parking…there isn’t going to be a lot of on-site parking…the wonderful City of Memphis sold part of the Liberty Bowl area that was previously used for parking there are 5000 General Parking spaces available. However, I think they are working to get acess to the sold area. You have to remember that U of Memphis never sells more than about 10 or 20K tickets. This is a sell out with 62K people coming.
I live here and I am considering riding the MATA (Memphis Area Transit Auth.)
They will shuttle to and from the game for $7 here is the link:

Greg, have they told you guys anything about the General Parking?
December 27, 2007 at 10:18 am
It looks like I’m going to have two extra tickets. They are tickets I am getting from someone who works at Fedex. Not sure What section they are in, but they are in the building. I’m sure I could work something really reasonable for someone on here. Wanted to give you guys first crack before I went somewhere else.

Gregg, Gates don’t matter up there. Typically “hotel security” is tied in and get their cut. However, the smash the window and grab is most common. Don’t even leave an empty box in your car. Also, restaurants like Flemings out on Popular (nice restaurant, used to be okay area) are having lots of problems now. I think it resides in their valet parking, whether they park it or not. If they see something interesting like a rental car, they call their buddies and you come out to find your window smashed. We had all kinds of problems with our office up there. It was the cleaning people. We finally got the office complex to make a change and since we got a group of Vietnamese to start cleaning, we haven’t had a problem (two years). Memphis is the pits these days. Too bad, because it really could be a great place.

By the way, the Peabody has its share of Gremlins too. Quite a few expensive things disappeared between some MSU vans and the room. Just ask the video operations crew if they have had any problems.

HOW MUCH FARLEY
December 27, 2007 at 12:05 pm
$60 for both. Trying to get enough money to get two more buffet tickets.
December 27, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Anyone needing tickets should call any Ole Miss friends who advertise with YellowBook. They(YellowBook and Yellow Pages) bought tons of them and are giving them out like candy. A friend attorney said he would rather have a root canal than go to the Liberty Bowl to watch State and had 4 tickets he was trying to give to State fans. They were free so I talked my wife into coming home from the in-laws early to make the game.
Christmas at a hotel is something we have unfortunately done for several years now. Santa even has room key cards to sneak in…imagine that!

dawgx, I’ve heard nothing about general parking. I’ve been the last two years just as a fan and haven’t had trouble anywhere aprking, except that I got blocked in last year.
And so far, no one has messed with my car. I’m at the Marriott for one more night, and then it’s off to the Embassy Suites for Friday night.
