Call it an ugly game if you wish, but Mississippi State defeated Central Florida 10-3 to win Saturday’s Liberty Bowl.
Not the kind of game I expected. I really thought it would be a high-scoring affair.
Oh well.
Your thoughts?

Obviously we weren’t very good offensively but their defense had a lot to do with that. All that matters to me is that, as we have done in every win this year our defense kept us in the game and we found a way to win. When the chips were down we were able to pull it out. Man what a defense!!! I tell you, Smith was absolutely frustrated in the second half and I bet he would say that was the best defense they faced all year. Even though they were c-usa they had averaged 34 points a game and we shut them down.
December 29, 2007 at 8:52 pm |
Great defense, bad until the last drive offense. Overall, I am so proud of my Bulldogs. I wonder what Momma Smith is going to say?
December 29, 2007 at 9:26 pm |
What a great game! So glad I went. Just like the Egg Bowl our offense was el stinko for 3.5 quarters but they came through when it counted!
December 29, 2007 at 9:55 pm |
I want to talk about the UCF fans. They are so arrogant and classless. Some of them in my section (106) stood up the entire game. After our score, somone poured beer on my back and someone hurled something and hit my dad in the back. Also, they are such idiots, two or three of their female fans decided that they wanted to outscream the cowbells…what idiots

Croom is a great disciplinarian and he has turned the team around. However, at some point, the team is going to have to start playing with some spunk and a sense of urgency. We can’t play every game like sludge being poured through a coffee filter.
Congratulations to Coach Croom for a good season. I don’t envy him, as next year is definitely his make it or break it year. We have to start being SEC contenders again.
December 29, 2007 at 10:59 pm |
Hate that I couldn’t watch it in person, but I couldn’t. On TV, I saw a lot that helps explain the low scoring. The officials were horrible and cost us a few points. That is my opinion. UFC’s coach certainly knows how to work the officials and a great job he did. Congrats to Coach Sly and our beloved Bulldogs on a successful winning season. I can’t wait to see the 2008 season.
DC, you should have expected atleast some of that from the other side. Regardless of who is playing, some folks have to show that they have no class. I just hope the Bulldog nation never stoops to that level.
December 29, 2007 at 11:18 pm |
No bully4life these guys are HORRIBLE! I literally had to be restrained from whipping this one 40 something guys rear end. For a team that has never won anything, they sure were jerks.
December 29, 2007 at 11:27 pm |
Just got back from the Liberty Bowl. Wesley did not have a great game and the offensive line got whipped a bunch but this team does not know how to quit.
I was proud to see Wesley running the ball late after his passing was not working. He is a tough kid.
D Pegues played a great ball game, he was the man today. Thank God for our defense.
24 k got popped many times and he was just not effective after some of those hits.
Ugly with a capital “U”, but it was great to see that sea of Maroon in the Liberty Bowl. I am just starting to get my hearing back…
BTW, the tailgating was great, but getting out of the parking lot was a drag. GO DAWGS!!

I never look ahead and try to predict next season, but, we look really strong for next season. A qb with a year under his belt, and a full offseason in the weight progam. Dixon and Ducre could be the best one two combo in ther SEC, and only juniors. Receivers with experience coming back, although they did look like they could use some real speed. And the D just never stops. I haven’t given up on hoops, and I’m looking foward to baseball but the football team has really made me proud. And we did it clean with no scandal. Go Dawgs!!!

does anyone know the UCF blog address that farley and company have been going to and harassing? I’d like to check out the comments today.
December 30, 2007 at 8:56 am |
The offense was bad for one reason: We could not stretch the field. However, in light of the fact that Wes is a winner and the guys respond to him, this year we just won on guts and grit. Believe, I love that. However, next year, one of two things will happen. Either Wes’s arm will improve and he will be able to stretch a defense (this is the best option) or Chris Relf will enter at least in a two-quarterback system. I do not see Mike as a factor. The reason is chemistry. They respond to Wes, they do not to Mike. I also think they would respond to Relf because I have seen how the guys interact with him off the field. Another name to remeber is Robert Elliot. Ducre was great for us, but Elliot could fill that role even better. Ducre will still get carries I’m sure, but I would give about 2/3 of what Ducre got this year to #2 next year. If you get on Dawgsbite, Croom has said he wished he could have played Robert in the bowl game. That’s big praise.
All in all, I am already looking forward to next football season. I expect an even bigger year next year.
GO DAWGS!!

Farley, I couldn’t help but think of you when the post-game press conference ended. Momma Smith walked right by and she didn’t look none too happy. I whisipered, “Farley says hi!”
December 30, 2007 at 1:31 pm |
Gregg, I saw a shot of Mike on the sideline when he didn’t go back in the game after only one play. He didn’t look to me like he wanted to be a part of the team anymore after that. Maybe I’m reading to much into it and he was just disappointed that he didn’t get to go back. Have you heard anything that would indicate he might leave. Don’t know where he would go except D-II.
December 30, 2007 at 1:48 pm |
Anyone watching Hoops? Why isn’t Rhodes playing? Is he hurt? Or something worse?
December 30, 2007 at 2:00 pm |
Forgot all abouth hoops Tom, was busy watching my other beloved football team, Da Bears. But, I think I’m gonna try to watch the second half. Maybe I can get an idea of why we suck so bad.
December 30, 2007 at 2:01 pm |
I just heard Tom. Rhoades has a sprained ankle, did not dress.
December 30, 2007 at 2:16 pm |
Gotcha. Thanks. I was afraid he was “late for breakfast” again. Our 3 point shooting is atrocious. We are 4/20 from behind arc. Jamont is 0 for 4! Again! Stop shooting 3′s Jamont! Please. Hansbrough is actually 2 for 5…now that’s a change for the better.
December 30, 2007 at 2:25 pm |
Looks like another “down to the wire” game. It sure would be nice to finish on the winning side of the wire for a change. We need it.
December 30, 2007 at 2:32 pm |
Still got piss poor free throw shooting, and like I said last season. Free throws are where you win close gomes. Looks like they have a hard time with transition D, and guarding the 3 point shot.
December 30, 2007 at 2:43 pm |
Gregg, that is funny. I do have to say their fanbase was horrible. Arrogant jerks. They kept trying to start fights with the people around me. I was the only one willing to take them up on the offer. My brother had a drunk woman insult everyone from the state of Mississippi. Said we were all ignorant rednecks. They treated me worse than any other teams fans I’ve seen so far.
December 30, 2007 at 2:47 pm |
67% ain’t great from the FT line, but, it ain’t terrible. In fact we were pretty decent down the stretch. Gordon hit 4 in a row. Stewart hit a couple. Turner was 2 for 3 from the line when it counted. Jarvis on the other hand… well… he’s Jarvis… 1-4.
Good win for the Dawgs. Glad to see us finish a game and get a W. Great job guys!
December 30, 2007 at 2:48 pm |
I was just saw Jamont throw it down with on a break away to finish the game, and I’ll admit it’s the first time I’ve seen them play this season. But, it just made me think, I wish they would just play the game, and not have to flex, or mug at the other team. Maybe the hoops dawgs could use a little of what the gridiron dawg are doing. Have fun and win with just a little class. I know it’s not just us, and it’s the way the game has gone, but it doesn’t mean we have to play that way. Maybe it’s just me.
December 30, 2007 at 3:06 pm |
I don’t blame Jamont for throwing it down at the end. It has been a frustrating season and this was one of the few games where they looked like they were having fun. I’m proud of the boys. They might be able to turn this season around yet.
December 30, 2007 at 3:06 pm |
UCF has the absolute worst fanbase I’ve ever seen (for them not to be a major conference team). It’s almost like they were trying to surpass LSU standards.
I was stuck behind the whole high school band crowd. That was annoying in itself b/c they were always moving around and they didn’t care about the game. And the ones that did were for UCF.
There was one thug and his white girlfriend that I really wanted to punch in the throat. Both of em! The girl kept flipping off the State fans and he was doing some jigaboo moves the whole time while laughing towards our sections. He kinda shut his mouth when the D was putting 24K in his place. And, security (who was also thugged-out) had him move b/c he wasn’t in the right section.
A high school band girl almost got tagging with a beer bottle right at the start of the 3rd quarter, that obviously came from the UCF section next to us.
It made it even more awesome to win just to see those freakish, gay-and-lesbian club members shut their d**m mouth. Go To Hell UCF!
December 30, 2007 at 3:11 pm |
I’m not blaming him for throwing it down warbirdz, it’s the flexing and all that other stuff, that gets to me. It goes on the whole game. Leave all that out and get back on D.
December 30, 2007 at 3:18 pm |
This W could turn out to be a corner turning win. Didn’t see the game, but, it seemed like we played under control (only 14 turnovers) and with great confidence (51% from the field).
At 8-5 I am a bit more optomistic. We’ve lost to some very good teams. South Alabama ain’t that bad either. I just looked at their schedule. They’ve lost only 3 games by a total of just 11 points. They lost by 3 at Ole Miss, by 5 at Miami of Ohio (remember them?) and 3 at Vandy!
Miami is currently ranked 19th although they lost at home to Winthrop (7-5) and will likely drop into the the best of the rest.
Clemson is currently ranked 21st and will likely move up a bit. Their only loss was a close one at #22 Ole Miss (12-0).
SIU is currently unranked and lost on a buzzer beater to #16 Butler yesterday.
Miami of Ohio is currently unranked, but they recently lost a close one on the road at Cincinati and had an upset win at Illinois (of course they got drummed at #3 Kansas).
Bottom line, we should and could have won at least 3 or 4 of those games. After some serious doubting on my part, I think we are going to be all right. I’m not sure if we don’t play better with a 4 guard lineup. Vanardo is a good shot blocker, but, an offensive threat he is not. Good rebounder too. But, we outrebounded Mizzou today by a comfortable margin and Varnado played only 23 minutes while grabbing 8 rebounds to go with 5 blocks. I think we could limit his minutes to 20 or less and still get solid production while playing a 4 guard lineup that gets Rhodes and Gordon get about 35 minutes each, while Barry and Ben combine for 55 minutes. That leaves about 35 minutes for bench play. Phil will pull in about 15 of those minutes, leaving 20 for the Johnsons, Bennock and Kodi.
Then again, I don’t have as clue what I’m talking about! I just hope we beat Ole Miss in the West!
December 30, 2007 at 3:18 pm |
It sounds like you have a lot of hate, thingreenline, and not just for UCF fans. I respect you opinion but and your right to state it, but you just seem to have a lot of stereo typical hate. I’m a black guy, with a white girlfriend. I like to dance and wear loose clothes, jerseys and hats. But I also wear a shirt and tie to my office everyday and would one of the last people to be considered a gangsta and definately not a jigaboo. Come on man, as a MSU fan you didn’t show much class with either of those statements.
December 30, 2007 at 3:30 pm |
Chrisfromcorinth,
I think thingreenline is saying that it was the way the guy and his girlfriend carried on that made him “thug”-like. As far as not having much for the gay and lesbian club members, I’m not sure what he is talking about. But, I know how the g&l’s like to flaunt their g&l’ness in my home town. I can’t stand it. However, that being said, I am a very conservative Christian with strong convictions, and yet, I have a co-worker and friend whom I greatly respect who is a lesbian. She is NOT an IN YOUR FACE type lesbian and is one of the best guidane counselors I know (yes… guidance counselor). If they’d all conduct themselves like her, they’d get a bit more of the tolerance that they “claim” to want – claim, because what they want is not “tolerance” (allowance) of their lifestyle but wholesale approval and total moral acceptance.

give me the link to that ucf blog you’ve been going to.

Farley, there’s a great article in the OrlandoSentinel.com that highlights 24K’s mama boy status. His mama has some great quotes in there. Enjoy

Here ya go. For the most part, the guys there are pretty cool. I did meet a couple of cool UCF fans though. I did get a picture with a go with a black and gold fro, kid armor, and a cape. He was a real classy guy. Just that group beside me needed to be smacked in the mouf!
December 30, 2007 at 4:07 pm |
guy, not go
December 30, 2007 at 4:36 pm |
I don’t know about you guys but the constant commercials in the stadium at an over the top decibel level just got on my nerves. Does the Liberty Bowl have to beat you over the head with commercials to make a profit. I think they need to spend a little more on crowd control and traffic management, myself.
I actually enjoyed the UCF fans that I encountered both tailgating and in the stadium. Most congratulated us for the win as we were leaving.
December 30, 2007 at 5:34 pm |
Farley, was that fan wearing tights and something that looked like under armour? I could have sworn they showed him on espn. More than one could have been dressed like that, but I definitely remember seeing him.
December 30, 2007 at 5:55 pm |
That was the guy. He was incredibly nice and a real classy guy.
December 30, 2007 at 6:10 pm |
Anyone else out there not impressed with 24k? In the SEC he would only be a mediocre back. Wish I could have ran into his mommy like Gregg did. Would have loved to get a picture.
December 30, 2007 at 6:19 pm |
chrisfromcorinth, I didn’t mean anyhing offensive by what I said. And no, I’m not trying to pull an Imus either. Most of what I said was in a descriptive manner. What that guy was doing while he was taunting MSU fans is not what I’d call dancing; I call it showing your ass.
I guess I was bumped up against the UCF student section (thanks Bulldog Club!), and there wasn’t a classy one in the bunch. As far as the g&l comment, you just had to see it.
December 30, 2007 at 6:24 pm |
I saw several limp wristed guys wearing there gold and black scarves yesterday. I did see two walking hand in hand on the way in. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
December 30, 2007 at 6:47 pm |
There’s no offense taken, thingreenline. It just came out the wrong way to me. We are all one Bulldog Nation. It was trowing in the races of the girl and guy that got me. I don’t offend easily. I just speak up when I feel it’s needed.
December 30, 2007 at 8:14 pm |
I understand, chrisfromcorinth
December 30, 2007 at 8:37 pm |
Oh yeah, two other things I noticed last night:
(1) What’s up with that Lego-lookalike mascot of UCF’s tromping up and down the field. He looked like a gold stormtrooper!
(2) Am I wrong, or our the band spell out CROOM STATE before kickoff?? I heard a high school kid laugh about it just when I thought to myself “I hope the other team doesn’t catch onto that.” They did.
Who came up with that idea and where should we banish him/her to?
I didn’t see the halftime show, but I hope they did better.
December 30, 2007 at 8:39 pm |
I meant “or did our band spell out CROOM STATE before kickoff??”
December 30, 2007 at 8:42 pm |
I’m glad I didn’t have to sit around any UCF folks. I got my fill in the parking lot before the game. They are a bunch of obnoxious transplanted snowbirds. I didn’t hear a southern accent in the whole bunch. They only seemed intent on getting drunk, making fun of our cowbells, and acting like they were number 1 in the nation. After the game, they cranked up their cars and tried to pull in line to get out and set there for 45 minutes not saying a word. We cranked up Bad to the Bone and had a nice cowbell ringing session. They got what they had coming. Most cowbells that I have ever seen at a game I believe. There was no way to hear the band, the cowbells were so loud. Every play with our defense on the field they were ringing loud.
I drove down to the BB game today and Rhodes had a cast on his left leg all the way up to his knee but he seemed to be putting some weight on it. We were a much better team today with Stewart running point most of the game. We passed the ball much better and Gordon played under control. Hansbrough and Phil Turner hustled all day and I bet they had the most rebounds. Absolutely terrible officiating. Worst I have seen all year. That Rabern Johnson kid (number 2) was over his head what little time he was in there. Got trapped everytime he had the ball. He is not ready for SEC pressure yet. Stewart, Turner and Gordon all had really good games. Gordon made some unbelievable plays, it looked like he jumped 12 ft. high to block a 3 pt. shot late. They need to run off about 14 in a row now to get to the tournament.
Great Bulldog Year! All the Best Everyone in 2008!
December 30, 2007 at 8:45 pm |
They did spell out Croom and State later but I didn’t catch it if they were back to back. We spelled out MSU and SEC in there somewhere. Half time show was very weak. I had rather had a good Elvis impersonator from Beale Street than Hicks. At least I could have understood what they were singing.
December 30, 2007 at 10:40 pm |
Yeah, it was back-to-back. Pretty embarrassing. But, not as embarrassing as the little Star Wars theme they did back in 2001 (I think that’s the right year). Light sabers and everything!
