A little baseball, football and basketball

January 17, 2008

If you’re looking for a hodgepodge of news, try this . . .

Football
• Sylvester Croom has announced Keon Humphries, Anthony Littlejohn and Demario Bobo will not be a part of the team next year. However, all three will remain in school.

Baseball
• MSU starts practice on Feb. 4, with the first game set for Feb . 22 in Jacksonville against North Florida. The home opener is Feb. 26 against UAB. It’s the first time since 2000 the Bulldogs haven’t opened the year at Dudy Noble. And the annual First Pitch Banquet is set for Feb. 28, and Jonathan Papelbon will be the guest speaker.

Basketball
• Sophomore forward Jarvis Varnado leads the country with 93 blocks and is averaging 5.5 a game. In SEC play, he’s tops with 27. In second is South Carolina’s Sam Muldrow with nine. Varnado is also 13 shy of tying Erik Dampier’s single-season record of 106, set in 1995-96.

Hansbrough likely out again

January 17, 2008

Rick Stansbury said sophomore guard Ben Hansbrough’s broken middle finger on his left hand continues to get better, but that he’s still likely to be out Saturday at Alabama.

“He’s a long way from being able to play at the physical pace Ben plays with and where he’s comfortable,” Stansbury said. “I’ll be surprised if there’s any change or chance of him playing.”

Tip off Saturday at Coleman Coliseum is set for 2 p.m. and will be televised by Raycom Sports (WCBI).

Outside of that, there’s not much news to report. Of course, the day is still young.
