According to Darius “Tig” Barksdale, Mississippi State has not offered him a scholarship as of today. However, he and members of the coaching staff have talked and there appears to be interest on both sides, particularly on his. Of course, the NCAA won’t allow me to quote any coaches on this matter.
The South Panola standout, who said he wants to play running back, noted the only schools that have currently offered him a scholarship are Ole Miss, Missouri and Southern Miss.
My apologies for not making that more clear this morning. Around 5 p.m. today, he and I talked and he said he’s really impressed with all that Mississippi State accomplished this past year.
I have a strong, strong feeling this is going down to the wire, like the Robert Elliott saga.

When he gave his “verbal,” was it under O or Nutt?

January 21, 2008 at 5:45 pm |
Will he be eligible? What position would he play?
January 21, 2008 at 5:47 pm |
It probably won’t matter as much if he’s eligible in year 1 because we would probably redshirt him seeing as we are currently loaded at RB.
January 21, 2008 at 5:51 pm |
It would be great to get him if for no other reason than to get to the Rebs.
January 21, 2008 at 6:38 pm |
What are Tig’s numbers at S. Panola? Do you guys have a feel for how good he is? 3-star? 4-star?
January 21, 2008 at 6:45 pm |
He’s a legit 4 star. Very good, just has some off field issues.
January 21, 2008 at 6:47 pm |
In the one game of his I saw, he carried SP on his back to the 5A championship, and almost blew it my fumbling the ball on the one as he was showboating to the endzone. He’s a great player but he just seems like a headcase to me.

Maybe some Coach Croom discipline is what he needs?
Heck… I could’ve used some CC discipline at that age. Probably would’nt hurt at this age too! (c:
January 21, 2008 at 8:28 pm |
Are his parents wanting someone to mentor Tig? Maybe that’s part of the new interest.
January 21, 2008 at 8:34 pm |
The Ole Miss Blog is saying the Pegues is trying to sway Barksdale to State….I haven’t seen anyone here say anything about that. Makes sense seeing as how he came from SP. Any truth to this???
January 21, 2008 at 8:46 pm |
Most every HS superstar has showboated a time or two. Give me a break. Tig is an outstanding player and we need him in MAROON and WHITE.
GO DOGS!
January 21, 2008 at 8:53 pm |
I do recall DP high stepping in against Auburn. I live about 25 minutes from Tig. Want me to show the boy a good time this weekend?
January 21, 2008 at 8:55 pm |
We need his speed. He can push us from a definite 7-8 win team to a 10 win team. Speed kills
January 21, 2008 at 8:59 pm |
Oh lord. Bad things are coming. All those dawgsbite boys are coming over here to check out this blog. The days of free speech and friendly conversation are about to be over.
January 21, 2008 at 9:16 pm |
….must have been the controversial Nategate that got their attention….
January 21, 2008 at 9:16 pm |
If his academics are in question, I wonder if CC will offer him a scholarship.
He is definitely a great HS player, and we could use him.
Don’t worry Farley, this too shall pass.
January 21, 2008 at 9:25 pm |
You have spoke of that which shall not be named!!!!!! Not cool tgl!
January 21, 2008 at 9:30 pm |
On a basketball note, Bracketology now has us in the field of 64, projected as a 10 seed. It would be great if they can get in and get to play the first and second rounds in Birmingham. In there, they have us paired up with West Virginia and Duke as a possible second round game. I would love to see us play Duke again.
January 21, 2008 at 9:32 pm |
I have family in B’ham so I could make the trek for that one. This basketball stuff is starting to grow on me.
January 21, 2008 at 10:15 pm |
Seems like farley has been successfully converted into a basketball fan!
But yeah, it’d be great to make the tournament, regardless of where we go.
January 21, 2008 at 10:37 pm |
We have been quoted on the OMspirit page warbirdz. Some guy named southavenrebel trying to be funny. I’m glad I got banned from that site for telling Marine what a tool he is.
January 21, 2008 at 10:41 pm |
Really? What was he saying?
January 21, 2008 at 10:44 pm |
They were saying Farley didn’t know squat about football…he’s just a basketball fan. Glad it’s growing on you farley.
January 21, 2008 at 10:46 pm |
Can someone give me a link to the thread? I’d like to read it.
January 21, 2008 at 10:47 pm |
He highlighted these parts of our past posts;
we are currently loaded at RB.
no other reason than to get to the Rebs.
Thinking he was saying our RB’s are not good in yours and maybe I’m stupid in mine? Not sure. Just some guy trying to be witty. Not so much.
January 21, 2008 at 10:49 pm |
Don’t think we can link it, per Gregg, but I can tell ya how to get there. omspirit.com. Go to foruns. Ole Miss insiders. Then the topic titled;
For all those who say Tig has an offer from MSU. Last post.

Hey, I’ll gladly take the ACT for Barskdale if we need to get him qualified. Think I could get a fake I.D. with the name Darius Barksdale on it?
January 21, 2008 at 10:52 pm |
I know a fella…..
January 21, 2008 at 10:57 pm |
I think Croom would love to have him but is worried like Nutt about his grades. If he is taking the ACT in February then it is a crap shoot that has Tig a little worried about which JUCO he’ll end up at for a year.
January 21, 2008 at 11:01 pm |
Ok, i found it. Did they delete your replies or something?
January 21, 2008 at 11:26 pm |
I’ve been banned for about 2 months. The moderator over there, Marinereb and I had a spat. He’s actually a good guy. We messaged back and forth a couple of times. I can read, just no replies. Can find fault in a Marine no matter how hard I try. Just couldn’t resist saying hi to him earlier since they are coming over to our blog. I like the guy well enough.
January 22, 2008 at 1:28 am |
Hey Farley – I think you would really like our basketball team. They play Bball with a football mentality. We have a fullback guard (Gordon), a psycho-B guard who would rather knock someone over than shoot (Hans), an offensive guard F/C (Bailey) and a shot blocker that rejects all the weak crap the other team throws at the board. Rhodes dunks the ball like someone talked about his mama… just hoping guys head is under the rim!
We have a very physical, smash mouth team. You’d like it.
January 22, 2008 at 6:25 am |
Where have you been sly? He has been watching basketball.
January 22, 2008 at 6:42 am |
well, as funny as it seems to the spirit board, we do have a lot of talented backs. With Elliot down there he would at least have to be redshirted. He would not be the featured back for several years. Who does OM have coming in at running back? I’m not being sarcastic. I really don’t know.
January 22, 2008 at 7:15 am |
Draws, Robert Elliott would have played that role, but…maybe Tig can come right in and…uh, nevermind.
January 22, 2008 at 7:16 am |
We all know it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog. This guy has talent. But, it doesn’t surprise me one bit that Croom has not pursued him to this point. Croom doesn’t just look for talent in a player. He looks more importantly for character. Some people believe you can teach discipline and character. And that is true for some. However, the DNA of a person is impossible you, me, or Croom to change. A person has to want to change himself.
My prediction is this:
If “Tig” ends up at State, his playing time will be minimal. We have plenty of RBs that are very disciplined and work hard for Coach Croom. And if he does play, we’ll probably see the same type problems we saw with Dixon this year (fumbles, missed blocking assignments, and confusion) on a much higher scale.
I know we don’t need “Tig”, but it would be great to get him just so we could put some more egg in Ole Miss’s face.
January 22, 2008 at 7:23 am |
egg in their face? Dear friend….you have to remember, they are the mighty Ole Miss. We are just lil’ ole State. They invented football.
January 22, 2008 at 7:25 am |
Oh yeah, and Archie and Eli played there. Can’t let that be forgotten either.
January 22, 2008 at 9:08 am |
i work with his mother and asked her point blank, pegeus is working him hard to come to state, not as a rb, but as a safety. hasnt been offered, just fishing for one. but the are very close to a south panola LB thats in oxford right now. so who knows, but would be suprised if he ended up in starkville
January 22, 2008 at 10:35 am |
well, I’d take him, even if he might present CC with his greatest character challenge yet. But I’d keep him on offense- return punts and kicks
January 22, 2008 at 10:37 am |
Farley!!! all these new names, and they haven’t even went through initiation (nongreek)
January 22, 2008 at 10:45 am |
The dawgsbite guys got wind of Gregg’s article about Tig and we’ve had several new visitors. Oh how we have grown!
January 22, 2008 at 12:00 pm |
Did you guys see the tool in a skybox wearing an Ole Miss sweatshirt during the Packers/Giants game? Who was that guy?
That’s like wearing your high school prom t-shirt during your sophmore year in college…..
January 22, 2008 at 12:02 pm |
tgl, my husband and I laughed at that for several minutes after the camera moved off him.
January 22, 2008 at 12:11 pm |
I believe he was strategically placed by Nutt for recruiting.
January 22, 2008 at 1:30 pm |
Well played, Farley. Well played.
