I know this might not be a popular topic in this state, but Gregg Doyle of CBS Sports wrote a scathing column on how Archie Manning loves media attention and stole the show from Eli and the rest of his teammates following the NFC championship game in Green Bay.
Interesting read. Not sure I completely agree everything written, but I’d like to know what you all think.
I’ve read a lot of Doyle’s stuff, and he’s always one to rip and roar. Again, interesting read.

Yes, Archie should back off. I am sure he is a great guy and all, but this should not be his time in the spotlight. I would like to think that most fathers would simply say how proud they are and leave it at that.
January 22, 2008 at 2:13 pm |
Archie is a Momma Smith. Always has been, always will be. Why were they showing him before the kicker made the kick in overtime? Did Archie do something magical to make the kickers leg stronger as a youngster?
January 22, 2008 at 2:23 pm |
I didn’t see the postgame stuff after the Green Bay loss, but I am rather sick of the sports media’s pro-manning bias. XM radio runs a commercial every 30 minutes or so promoting their sports lineup that touts the manning’s as “football’s first family”. Granted I was born and bred to hate everything ole miss (why I don’t hate Peyton), but I think even non-MSU fans get sick of it. I’m glad that the columnist called out Archie.
January 22, 2008 at 2:27 pm |
attention wh.. woops!! rule #1
January 22, 2008 at 2:45 pm |
I hate those stupid Peyton Manning pep-talk commercials. I don’t like any of em. They get way to much leniency when they screw up and way too much credit win the team wins. Peyton always gets the, “Well, if his receivers would have caught more balls.” Or, “The lack of running game.” Or, “He’s a big doofus, but I’d have a Brokeback moment with him.”
January 22, 2008 at 2:48 pm |
They don’t really bother me all that much. It just gets a lil old sometimes.
January 22, 2008 at 2:48 pm |
YES he should back off with his involvement with the media. The media would get the idea if he said “you know what guys, I had my time in the spotlight and I am proud of all my sons. I would appreciate it if you would focus less on me and more on the game at hand”
however…I agree Farley…he is a momma smith.
Oh, did anyone catch after the packer game, Eli was looking for someone…”she” was supposed to be on the 50 yard line? I just thought it was kinda funny that the cameras caught that!
January 22, 2008 at 3:04 pm |
Whoever she was she was in section 117 row 2 seat 5. Maybe it’s his gal pal. How cute would that have been?
January 22, 2008 at 3:07 pm |
hey farley, since spirit posted something we wrote I thought I’d grab this one for ya!!
http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=177#s=177&f=1103&t=1895847
January 22, 2008 at 3:11 pm |
Archie is a tool. Definitely a Momma Smith.
January 22, 2008 at 3:12 pm |
I got no prob with Archie being there. He prob wasn’t the only dad there, just the only one recognized. Sounds like a columnist who best colums are when he can stir up somebody with such nonsense. Shows a serious lack of talent on the sportswriter.
January 22, 2008 at 3:16 pm |
It’s just typical pre-super bowl crap. Nothing to write about for two weeks so stuff like this comes out.
January 22, 2008 at 3:17 pm |
Love the Nadine reference in that article draws. SIMMA!
January 22, 2008 at 3:18 pm |
I thought it might be his gal pal too…he was most concerned about finding her!
Hey Farley…the name you post under (the current one, not 662vandownbytheriver
) is that inspired from the movie Mr. Woodcock? There is a kid on there whose name is John Farley and grows up to write a successful book…pretty funny movie at times. Also, my sister is pregnant…just found out over the weekend!
January 22, 2008 at 3:21 pm |
Would be my last name. I have a relative whose name is John Farley. When Billy Bob kept yelling at Farley, I would look up at the TV. Got annoying when I was blogging while watching the movie.
January 22, 2008 at 3:24 pm |
I thought Archie showed too much involvement back when he said Eli wasn’t going to play for the Chargers.
I guess when Eli and that girl (you know, the one he made sit in the stands so he wouldn’t get “jinxed”) get married, he’ll have to show Junior what happens on the honeymoon as well.
I can’t look at Eli without thinking “Dopey.”
January 22, 2008 at 3:26 pm |
For you imagirl, the wife has jumped on board heavy with the State stuff. Maroon walls half way up, State border in the middle, white walls the rest of the way up. White furniture to offset the maroon. White bumper and sheets, maroon and white quilt, maroon curtains. State growth chart, clock, various cowbells, pictures of us in our State gear and the dogs in theirs, Aedan’s name on the wall in maroon striped letters, and baby pictures of us two and the schnauzers. We are are gonna have one corner for the two mini schnauzers in the room with their crate and toys with there names in smaller letters above it.
January 22, 2008 at 3:26 pm |
Farley, is Farley Hall at Olemiss named after your family?
January 22, 2008 at 3:27 pm |
I’ve been thinking about renting Mr. Woodcock ON DEMAND. Is it worth the $4.95?
January 22, 2008 at 3:28 pm |
Not that I’m aware of. Our family would disown anyone who went to that vile institution!
January 22, 2008 at 3:28 pm |
I rented it this weekend jaybird, not worth the money. It wasnt a good movie. Not really even funny.
January 22, 2008 at 3:29 pm |
I couldn’t finish it. I only found it funny when Billy Bob was degrading the kids. You could watch him talk about a guy named Farley, which ya might get a kick out of.
January 22, 2008 at 3:30 pm |
Farley, that room will be awesome!!! I gave my daughter a cowbell for her birthday. She said it was the best present she got.
January 22, 2008 at 3:30 pm |
Should I change my name since graduated from scUM? If so, I am soliciting ideas for a new name. Your thoughts?
January 22, 2008 at 3:32 pm |
I sure hate to hear that. Bad Santa is one of my faves.
January 22, 2008 at 3:32 pm |
Jaybird the only time I laughed in the whole movie is when Billy Bob used the phrase. “You really showed some sac out there today.” I encourage everyone to use that phrase. I know I will.
January 22, 2008 at 3:34 pm |
jaybird-only if you have absolutely NOTHING ELSE to do! It was funny in places, but for the most part-snooze city.
January 22, 2008 at 3:37 pm |
Thanks for the reviews. I’ll rent “The Simpsons Movie” now.
January 22, 2008 at 3:37 pm |
Anyone think I will have trouble getting basketball tickets from the hump ticket office if i show up a couple hrs before the game?
January 22, 2008 at 3:37 pm |
Havent seen the simpsons but heard good things
January 22, 2008 at 3:37 pm |
AWESOME farley…that room will rock. There is also a picture that you might want…it is a boy in a diaper with a state football helmet on his head…it is called “in training”. Really cute…they also have the girl one…We have both!
January 22, 2008 at 3:39 pm |
Statefan, how about:
statefanthatgavealotoftuitionmoneytoolemiss
January 22, 2008 at 3:43 pm |
I like it but maybe a little long. Got anything else?…You guys would be proud of me, I cheered for the other team at every athletic event I went to. Also, I am prolly the only person to sneak a cowbell into the olemiss student section(and ring it) when the egg bowl was in oxford.
January 22, 2008 at 3:43 pm |
It don’t matter what you paint the room like. Once he starts crawling and/or walking your whole house will be trashed.
January 22, 2008 at 3:44 pm |
oxfordbulldog. I thought about that one. Or colonelbully.
January 22, 2008 at 3:46 pm |
Im not in oxford anymore though. I’m at home in central mississippi, looking for a job. Not having alot of luck though. Anyone know of anyone looking for some one with a BA in Biochemistry with a minor in Biology?
January 22, 2008 at 3:46 pm |
Draws, you know the room is for mommy. It will be done before the end of next month and we are not due til June! She has the rocking chair her mom bought for her when she was a baby that is going in there as well. She is never going to leave that room!
January 22, 2008 at 3:47 pm |
Amen Big…Also when they get old enough to use crayons and they get real quiet one day…watch out wall!
January 22, 2008 at 3:47 pm |
I know a guy from high school who is a meth dealer. Heard he needed a “chemist”. Don’t know if that’s the same thing or not.
January 22, 2008 at 3:48 pm |
Think I need to send him a resume or will he smoke it? haha
January 22, 2008 at 3:50 pm |
PS farley meant to say thanks on the tip with the computer repair guy in oxford. Nice guy. He fixed my comp and wasnt expensive either. He needs to clean that place up though.
January 22, 2008 at 3:50 pm |
ha, damn farley
January 22, 2008 at 3:56 pm |
How about johngrishamnumber2
He is a state fan (and Graduate) who graduated from Ole Miss.
January 22, 2008 at 4:00 pm |
No problem with the computer guy. Weird guy, but he is inexpensive and good. He shop does look like a computer exploded though.
January 22, 2008 at 5:36 pm |
Archie must have caused a pretty big scene in the locker room to have garnered this much attention. (I can’t believe this guy doesn’t have anything better to write about!) I can’t stand the obligatory Archie shot at every game, but I think it’s great he is there. The reoprter who said he should “go away” is off base. Just because your kid grows up doesn’t mean you stop supporting him! There has to be a happy meduim–something between vanishing and stealing the spotlight–and every parent should find it. I am generally anti-Manning, but just because they are UM people.
January 22, 2008 at 5:45 pm |
I’m with you guys that are saying the sports media is just looking for something to write about in the boring two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. I bet there were other dads of players acting as crazy. They’re just not as famous.
January 22, 2008 at 5:56 pm |
Imagirl, check this site out. Found it on ebay today and I’m gonna have to get one for the nursery.
January 22, 2008 at 6:32 pm |
Look at this nugget I found.
Check out pick 68. What a moron this guy is!
January 22, 2008 at 9:24 pm |
yes Archie should back off. I got sick of seeing him last year when the focus should have been on Peyton. Of course Peyton is the only Manning I can stand. At least he had the good sense not to go to ole miss!
January 22, 2008 at 11:06 pm |
Have always been an Archie fan. Don’t understand all the Archie haters here.
Glad Archie was in the locker room with his son. Keep it up Archie and thanks for setting us a fine example of fatherhood.
January 23, 2008 at 12:04 am |
Good point Tom,
Gregg, What were you thinking asking a “Manning” question over here to all these anti-Ole Miss folks?!?!
If I was Eli, I’d want my Dad to be there to enjoy the moment.
Anyhoo… Anyone notice that Archie looked like SRV in the photo (with the black hat, etc.)??
January 23, 2008 at 6:20 am |
Yeah, it’s a lot better than the Waldo look he usually goes for.
January 23, 2008 at 8:36 am |
rebelgiant66, we venture into all type of conversations here. There’s very little that’s off limits. But if this is the first time you’ve read the blog, I’ll give you a pass. LOL!
January 23, 2008 at 10:50 am |
You know, I have to agree that this guy is scraping the bottom of the barrel for something to write (editorialize) about. Archie is proud of his boys and it’s not like he isn’t part of the NFL family. The writer asks unfairly if other players dads were in the locker room after the game.
How many of those players dad’s were NFL alumni? He needs to understand that we are witnessing something that has never happened before as far as I know. That is the fact that two brothers playing quarterback have taken there teams to the Superbowl in consecutive years. At least I think it’s a first.
I’m not a big Manning fan but this writer needs to get a life.
January 23, 2008 at 10:54 am |
Oh and I would like to add that these guys are truly a family and Archie is a true role model in how he has guided his family. That’s a lot more than can be said for a great deal of the players and their families that are in the league. Especially the ones who were supposedly being snooty about him being there. I know this. Neither Peyton or Eli have any issue with their Dad being anywhere.
