Should he stay or should he go

By Brad Locke

Jamont Gordon and the NBA …

If you were his advisor, what would you tell him and why?

Try not to advise him based on a MSU fan’s perspective.

Gordon was tremendous against Memphis. He has the potential to do that week in and week out next year… but not in the NBA. Just as C-Rhodes upped his draft prospects in his senior campaign, so can Jamont.

He’d be unwise to exit for the NBA right now. He’s a year away from a college diploma and he is not a first rounder.

I’m pretty sure he’ll be back and we’ll be poised to win the SEC oughtright. This team was not unlike the team we had in the year previous to our final four run. We’ll be back and will go deep into the Dance next year.

As much work that Gordon said he did on his jumper over last summer, he needs to multiply that by 3.

He is still not getting enough arc and he is not always landing in the same spot when he comes down.

For the NBA, he’s a tweener. He can’t shoot well enough to play 2-guard and he can’t run a team well enough to play the point.

And “advisor” is a funny word. We all know that most “advisors” of college and high-school athletes have a monetary interest at hand.

The final point: 2nd round money is not guaranteed money.

Personally, I think he will jet. But NBA people, scouts, etc., will tell him to stay in school.

“Jamont, you are a CLEAR first round pick… I know the Titans are looking for an inside linebacker to compliment Keith Bullock. The Patriots are always looking for toughness… do you have any experience in camera work/ spying… Belichek is ALWAYS looking for those skills”

Right now, I’ve seen no mock drafts, not one, project Jamont in the SECOND round, much less the first. He would be crazy to leave early. He’s got to see that. He needs another year. He was 3rd in the SEC in assists at 4.9 per game. He can score & rebound better than most PG’s out there. He’s just got to cut down on his TO’s.

I’m hoping that after hearing from the scouts and the experts that he’ll do the right thing for JAMONT and return.

Its always been my opinion, that unless you’ve reached your potential, or you are dominating, at one level, then its premature to move to the next level

  6. theconquistador Says:

I honestly don’t think he’s ready. If he needs a reason to stay, then I would give him Mario Austin’s telephone number. He could also look at Rhodes and see how much his senior season raised his stock. A serious NBA college prospect doesn’t leave you holding your breathe when they have the ball in critical situations.

He’s got the talent to play at the next level, he just hasn’t learned how to “put it all together”.

  7. imabulldog Says:

Stay, if you had played and averaged 20 points a game for the entire year like you did midway thru the SEC schedule up until the end of the year, you would be a top 10 pick.
Wait to next year, rebound with an even stronger performance and we’ll make millions

  8. imabulldog Says:

    millions

I think he should stay because, though I know that many of those turnovers were caused by uncalled hacks in the lane, the NBA execs do not. That is the only reason his stock is not soaring. He should come back and lead this team to a National Title and ride the wave like Deron Williams did a couple of years ago.

I’m not kidding about the National Title, either. If Scotty comes, we will run two groups and run people into the ground. Can’t wait!

  10. cajundawg Says:

I agree, he is not ready. He is a tremendous athlete and bb player but is simply not polished enough to play in the NBA. If he leaves now his route will be NDBA or whatever that minor league is… or Europe/Asia/South America… who knows! Lawrence Roberts was a polished a player that has come out of State in a while and he struggled to impress the scouts after his Jr. year… and came back and STILL struggled, so although coming back does not guarantee upward mobility in the draft, we know it will make him a better player. IMHO if he comes back, he will be SEC POY and 1st team ALL SEC and AMERICAN… maybe even Naismith award winner! And that would garner a lot in the eyes of the scouts! But more importantly, he may leave with some ‘hardware’ on his finger… can anyone say OUTRIGHT SEC CHAMPS… SEC Tourney champs… Final Four… and dare I say NATIONAL CHAMPS!…

*he walks away with that dreamy look in his eye knowing that maybe ONE day it could happen…* SIGH

I don’t think he’s ready, but I hope he goes. With Gordon it’s been feast or famine for the bulldogs. He’s so out of control at times and totally inconsistent in all aspects of the game. He’ll never be a point guard in the NBA, and probably wouldn’t be at any other NCAA school. I think there are some very good recruits that we might get if he decides to go NBA. I dread going through another year having to watch him in a bulldog uniform. With his talent level he should be unstoppable. Unfortunately, he can’t stay focused long enough to bring a team together. This years is proof that it takes much more than talent to be successful week after week. Our coach has no clue how bring the team together.
I’m sorry for being so negative, but it really frustrates me to no end to see such potential and know the second round is all we deserved.

  12. acooks Says:

I believe Jamont should stay, if anyone has really watched him over the past years, he has a lot of talent but he lacks leadership and the ability to get his team mates involved in the game. If he played his position of being a point guard and passed the ball to players like Charles Rhodes who had the dominating ability to score at least 20 to 30 points a game if passed the ball Mississippi state could have gone even further in the ncaa. It also does not help him that his coach also thinks he is God in a MsState uniform, and that he can win all by himself, even David needed help to slay the giant. With more leadership abilities he has the the potential to be a good player but the first thing he has to learn is that basketball is a team sport.

  13. dawgbones Says:

Stansbury will tell an agent that Jamont is not going to get better in college than he is now. What you see now is what you will get next spring. In my opinion Jamont will be playing elsewhere next year, probably in an European league. Probably at best a 4th round pick in the NBA and he would probably make more money in the European league and play more. I don’t think he will be back next year but take the money he can get now because it will not go up next year and might even go down. I, like Stansbury, would advise him to go ahead and go. Rick expects him to go and I believe is planning for next year based on him being gone. Plus he believes he has a true point guard coming in that will play better into the mix.

  14. fun2bmaroon Says:

I know that Jamont is “listening” to a lot of people out there right now….Hopefully, he is mature enough to listen to the one person that can “grade him” better than anyone in the NBA….Rick Stansbury…..

  15. themaroonandwhite Says:

IT’S SIMPLE…If he is positive he can go in the 1st round…then go. If he isn’t then STAY!
