I’d definitely say so.
Just look at the scrambled picture that leaves one with a migraine.
First off, there’s leadership strongly lacking at the top, as well as the bottom. Robert “Doc” Foglesong’s days as president are nearing an end. Monday, to be exact. Then, Dr. Vance Watson takes over on an interim basis. But how much power will he actually have?
Then there’s the athletic department. Talk about strange and uncomfortable.
There’s currently two athletic directors in the Bryan Building, and I’m not really sure if there’s one. Who’s calling the shots? Larry Templeton, who is on his way out? Or Greg Byrne, who is on his way in? I’m not even sure if they know. And is this a seamless transition? There’s a lot of nervousness and concern in the building right now, and rightfully so.
And of course, the balance of power, or the lack thereof, is even more magnified due to the resignation of Ron Polk on Thursday.
Who’s going to conduct a search for his replacement? Will there be a search? Polk has already publicly endorsed current assistant and former standout Tommy Raffo. Then there’s a large faction calling for the hiring of John Cohen, another former MSU great that’s now overseeing Kentucky baseball and doing a pretty good job.
But what if Cohen is hired at MSU? I mean, Polk did endorse Raffo? Talk about a more uncomfortable scene.
It’s just crazy. And no one wants to talk, which is about as ridiculous as snow in the deep south in May.
Think about it. One of the biggest names in college baseball steps down and no one in power wants to talk about his accomplishments or the legacy he leaves behind.
Are you kidding me? Sometimes, public relations as a whole at MSU leaves a little something to be desired, and this was one of those cases. But Thursday really left me shaking my head. To be honest, I’ve never seen anything like this.
But I will say, it’s time for somebody on campus to step up, take charge and show leadership. Now. Enough of this walking on eggshells stuff.
And if that means Larry Templeton, whom I have the utmost respect for and still question his removal, walking away next week rather than the end of June, then that move needs to be made. He’s in a lame duck situation complicated by the fact that the guy who fired him, Foglesong, is now mysteriously out the door himself. Gee, who will do the flyovers now?
Somebody needs to do what’s best for the university. Otherwise, it’s going to be the great Mississippi State University that suffers in the end.

The strange situation around the baseball program can be explained with two words: Ron Polk. I think he is a great guy, but he’s just a different kind of person.
As for the rest of the chaos, it all seems a little odd. Tempelton probably doesn’t know how to do much else, plus the man who forced him out is no longer his boss.
Overall, its a good time to be a Bulldog, even with all the confusion. Get good people in place, and we could see a nice run in athletics, academics, and fund-raising.
March 28, 2008 at 8:24 am
I’ll say it again. Please no Raffo.
March 28, 2008 at 8:50 am
The University is starting to remind me of what is going on with all of the top lawyers in our state. Everyone is dropping like flies and everybody is pointing fingers. Did you guys hear that Polk has put his name in for a major league job and that Cohen has commited to coach for LSU? Also Wes Carrol has decided to transfer to Florida, he prayed about it and thinks its best for his chances in the NFL. haha
March 28, 2008 at 8:55 am
That was very entertaining bdog13. I may need you to post comments like that more often.
March 28, 2008 at 8:56 am
I agree Gregg.
Byrne if your reading this, take control of this situation now. Don’t let LT screw us one last time before he leaves by hiring Raffo. The last time Polk named his successor, it didn’t turn out to well.
I like Raffo, but I really think hiring him would be a terrible move. He has no HC experience and we haven’t really been known for our hitting over the years. The fact that Raffo has been an assistant for 15 years and has not got a HC job (unlike many other MSU assistants) should tell you something.
March 28, 2008 at 9:12 am
Just trying to stir up certain people again, haha. They entertain me during the day when they are talking about all this stuff.
March 28, 2008 at 9:17 am
Wes Carroll to Florida? I heard Michigan so he could be the next Pat White.
March 28, 2008 at 9:19 am
bdog13, I thought you would have said that Stansbury is tired of his floor coach critics and is stepping down if Hopson goes to UT. Gordon says he will stay if only he can Coach and be Point Guard.
March 28, 2008 at 9:27 am
This is simple. Polk got to choose his successor once in Pat Mac. He shouldn’t get to choose one aGAIN, especially considering his overall job performance the last 7 years.

Great post GG!
Bird, who exactly is going to put these good people in place? There is no one there to do it. I really don’t think it is such a good time to be a Bulldog. As of right now, the University has absolutely no leadership and no direction. If I were to call it anything, it would be a time of great instability. GG is right, someone needs to take the reigns. They powers that be have cut off their nose to spite their face.
March 28, 2008 at 9:33 am
So, Braves, have you ever wondered how a sawed off nose feels? That’s gotta hurt.
March 28, 2008 at 9:34 am
I guess the daffodil controversy has moved to the back burner?
March 28, 2008 at 9:38 am
I would imagine it feels about like that in the Administration of the University. It is hurting for sure.
March 28, 2008 at 9:47 am
Braves, I say its a good time to be a Bulldog because enrollment is up, our athletic teams have had recent success, and the future seems bright. Byrne will eventually be the only cheif in the teepee, and I believe the next president will be a Bulldog at heart, who is most concerned with academics, rather than flying a WW2 red baron plane or running 20 miles at 3:00 am.
Yes, I probably have a maroon tint to my glasses, but I love the University and will support it no matter what. Sure, I get frustrated at times, but I still cheer for MSU and always hope for the best. I’m not saying that to imply that you don’t feel the same. I know you love MSU, just as much as I do.
March 28, 2008 at 9:49 am
I just don’t see how the future could be all that bright when there is no one to lead the University into it.
March 28, 2008 at 9:53 am
That time is coming Braves. It just needs to happen now rather than later.
March 28, 2008 at 9:55 am
Exactly GG.
March 28, 2008 at 10:28 am
Hell, I’m Mayor here, I’ll do it. My first act will be to make Fridays topless Fridays for the good looking sorority’s. The fat ugos will be required to wear monks robes so we don’t have to look at their skank asses on Fridays.
March 28, 2008 at 10:30 am
What about people with big heads, Farley? What’s their attire?
March 28, 2008 at 10:39 am
Shriners Fez’s so they look like dancing monkeys.
March 28, 2008 at 10:45 am
i agree with south panola dog, he should not be able to pick his successor twice, even if he is ron polk….raffo would be a mistake, love the guy but not the coach…..of course he is going to endorse his friend though as he is stepping out the door, who wouldnt?….but i said it earlier, byrne needs to step up and make the right hire!…leave LT in the dark….
March 28, 2008 at 11:29 am
Is there any chance Watson will announce Tuesday after he takes over the temporary president job that Byrne is in charge of the search and clear that up?
March 28, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Nice article Gregg and right on. I tell you though, as ridiculous as it sounds, there is an ongoing power struggle for LT to be reinstated as AD. You would think that there would be a snowball’s chance but Templeton has a lot of friends within the administration and they are pushing just that. Maybe a reason things haven’t cleared up. If Byrne is going to be able to do the job, he just needs to step up and assume charge and go. If he doesn’t do it now, he will be forever “run over”.
As to Watson, surely it is only interim and we don’t go down the Charle Lee road again. Watson is a nice guy and I had him for a class but he is not equipped to run a university. Heck, I even saw him at the Liberty Bowl selling a couple of extra tickets. You would have thought he would have given them away to Bulldog supporters. Anybody that cheap doesn’t need to be university president.

You couldn’t have said it any better, GE. Most of the time it seems that no matter who is in charge at MSU, they are still just a bunch of idiots running that place. I hope Byrne can make a positive impact at MSU. But it looks more and more that there is a puppet master of idiocy pulling the strings at MSU and nobody seems able to change that.
March 28, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Greg, I think you said it best that ” it’s time for somebody on campus to step up, take charge, and show leadership……I have nothing for or against Mr. Foglesong, however, it seems so strange to hire a new athletic director while the outgoing athletic director is still in an office, and then turn around and resign yourself. I think the wisdom would have been for the new athletic director to walk in to the offices, and no one from a “hold over” situation be present. As for Coach Polk, I do not understand the “Timing” for his resignation. Why not finish the season, during which “privately” he could have been having discussions with the new athletic director about his leaving and a replacement…… Is it a possibility that there is a potential “mushroom cloud” situation out there that has not been made public yet that will shock Mississippians far and near ? If not, then I know that Dr. Watson better be ready to step up, take charge, and show leadership…..
March 28, 2008 at 6:12 pm
I think that Polk’s ‘timing’ will actually work in favor of the team… a little incentive so to speak! I know that these guys are playing in the SEC and at the TOP level of College Baseball and should not need anymore incentive… BUT they can use this as a motivational tool, although it could actually backfire on them…
March 28, 2008 at 6:23 pm
No mushrooms, fun2bmaroon. And remember, it’s gg.
