MSU baseball by the numbers

Hitting
AVG: .299
SEC rank: T6th
SEC average: .301
Interesting note: MSU leads the league with 309 strikeouts.

Pitching
ERA: 6.44
SEC rank: 12th
SEC average: 4.30
Interesting note: MSU is the only team that’s allowed 400-plus hits.

Fielding
AVG: .968
SEC rank: T6th
SEC average: .967
Interesting note: MSU is 11th in the SEC with 26 double plays turned, ahead of Vanderbilt with 21.

While those stats certainly tell the story, I’m still stunned there were 38 batters stranded in the Alabama series. 38.

Yikes.

The Bama series was an exception to the way we’ve been losing games. Other than game one of course. Mostly it’s been our pitchings fault. Which leads me to a question. Which I’m about to put in your blog bag.

Feel free to ask now if you want a quick answer.

  3. bigdraws Says:

gg, do you think if State were to hire Raffo. Would he have the guts to fire fellow assistant coaches? Most importantly, would he have the guts to fire Russ McNichols?

  4. Gregg Ellis Says:

Well, draws. I for one do not think MSU will hire Raffo. But if that is the case, then I would expect Russ McNickle to remain on staff.

  5. bigdraws Says:

Stuff like that right there is the exact reason we can’t hire Raffo. All this buddy buddy crap has got to go.

  6. Gregg Ellis Says:

Out of curiosity, what is it you don’t like about McNickle?

  7. bigdraws Says:

The fact that our pitching staff sucks tops my list.

  8. bigdraws Says:

Let me guess, it’s not his fault.

  9. Gregg Ellis Says:

Oh. I thought it might have been something else. But you must have liked him prior to this year, right?

  10. bigdraws Says:

No. Wanted him fired last year just like everybody else, before they went on their run. I think Josh Johnson could have been a much better pitcher with someone else’s help.

Mr. Ellis, I notice that you are both a reporter and also give out your opinion which used to be taboo in media circles, unlike Veazy at the Clarion Liar, who almost never gives his opinion. Is this ok with your rag and does Veazey get upset because you have so much more freedom to give opinions.

  12. Gregg Ellis Says:

goodbadugly, our paper, or as you say our rag, has always been like that. Not just me. Although I’m probably more blunt than most here.
As for Kyle, I don’t think he cares one bit.

GG is just a big-headed MSU fan who happens to write for the Daily Journal.

  14. jaybirdms Says:

He’s a Yankee fan, too, but we don’t usually hold that against him.

(AP Wire) Jamont Gordon signs with the Flint Tropics/ endorsement deal with Old Spice to follow.

Best Wishes Jamont. Thanks for three memorable (at times breathtaking) years of MSU Basketball.

Ravern my son… keep the powder dry.

Here in the Jackson area, DSU head coach Mike Kinnison’s name has been popping up. I knew they had a good program, but I know very little about his, so I went to DSU’s website and looked at his bio.

    Coaching Record: 13th year 504-138 (.785)
2004 National Coach of the Year
    2004 Div II National Champs
    4 CWS
    8 South Regionals
    9 GSC Divisional Titles
    3 South Regional Championships
    3 GSC Championships
He also was a high school coach where his teams went 292-83 (.779)

I know this is Div II, but it’s apparent the guy can coach and he wins. Byrne should at least interview him. What are ya’lls thoughts?
