Looking at the week ahead

Today, Mississippi State looks to take it’s second baseball series in as many weeks when it battles Auburn on the Plains in the rubber match. The Tigers took Game 1 on Friday, 11-4, while MSU claimed the second on Saturday, 4-3.

As for the rest of the week . . .
• At 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Quinton Wesley and Mike Brown learn how much jail time they will serve, if any. On Friday, the two pleaded guilty to felony charges of possession of a weapon on an educational property. The max is three years.
• There could be an announcement on new contract deals for both Sylvester Croom and Rick Stansbury.
• SEC baseball continues with a road trip to LSU. In midweek action, MSU travels to Middle Tennessee State for games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Two baseball notes about the schedule.

The midweek games are not being played at MTSU, but 65 miles south of Murfreesboro in Winchester, Tenn. The stadium reconstruction at MTSU, according to school officials, isn’t complete enough to handle the “large crowd” expected for the MSU games.

MTSU has played many games at home, including this weekend’s Sun Belt Conference series with Troy, but had to move the MSU series and a game last month with Tennessee. MTSU also lost hosting the baseball part of Spring Fling, the Tennessee high school state championships, in two weeks because the stadium wasn’t ready.

The LSU series will probably be the last three games at old Alex Box Stadium, if the Tigers don’t host a regional. LSU moves to a new on-campus ballyard next year. Should be plenty of memories flowing next weekend.

That place was obsolete almost 30 years ago when I was in college and involved with college baseball. But coach Bertman, when he moved to LSU from Miami, took lemons and made lemonade out of the old yard. He made it a showplace for great college baseball.

Hey State fans, isn’t replacing your baseball stadium so 1980s? Is that how much of a visionary Ron Polk was?

We do not need a replacement baseball stadium, just a replacement coach. But Polk was so far ahead of his time that many SEC schools have tried to recreate Dudy Noble on their campuses without flat out copying. But all have failed.

Now LSU is copying Arkansas. Rosenblatt was temporarily termed Box North, now we can call the new stadium Baum South.
