Off to the Big Apple
Today, I hand over the keys to the Mississippi State beat to Parrish Alford, who will take care of Ron Polk’s final three games at the helm of MSU.
My 11-year-old son, Zach, and I are off to New York to see our beloved Yankees play the MetsĀ for the final time at Yankee Stadium. I really do hate this trip was planned well before Polk announced his retirements plans, but I guess that’s baseball. It’s weird knowing I won’t be there.
Anyway, feel free to post your experiences from the weekend if you go. I’ll be checking in from time to time to read the comments.
Have a great weekend, and I’ll see you guys on Monday morning.
May 15, 2008 at 7:05 am
Slacker. I do wish the Yanks luck over the Muts though. Braves need all the help they can get right now. Have a safe trip GG. And don’t give in to all those autograph seekers.
May 15, 2008 at 9:10 am
That’s awesome, double g-man! There’s always another day at the ballpark at DNF; there won’t be at old Yankee Stadium with your 13 year old son watching a sub-way series. That only happens once in this life…enjoy and be safe! Go Yankees!
May 15, 2008 at 9:15 am
GG, grab something from the stadium for a souviner. You know, like a clump of grass or something.
May 15, 2008 at 10:36 am
Sorry…my Zach is 13… Strange how the subconscious mind works%!
May 15, 2008 at 11:06 am
MSU has a student on Jeopardy College Week. He’s not doing to good right now though.
May 15, 2008 at 11:11 am
Actually He’s getting stomped.
May 15, 2008 at 11:34 am
He lagged behind the whole game but ended up in second.
They still have tomorrow to go.
May 15, 2008 at 11:34 am
He used to run cross-country at Tupelo High School
May 15, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Who is he?
May 15, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Joey Beacham I think
May 15, 2008 at 1:24 pm
he’s from tupelo/saltillo…. and a senior at state
May 15, 2008 at 2:46 pm
They play at 11:00 tomorrow. wtva
May 15, 2008 at 4:43 pm
It’s a 2-day championship with combined $s from both days. Joey has finished strong in all 3 days he has played. He closed the gap in today’s final question. I expect him to come tomorrow with that uncanny self confidence he displays and do well. One thing that I’ve noticed is his repeated body “clicks.” Precursor to an underlying medical condition..? I wish him the best in life and in the military intelligence field.
May 15, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Is there a score update?
May 15, 2008 at 8:11 pm
5-3 state in top of fifth.
May 15, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Still 5-3 T7, crowd is sparsh.
May 15, 2008 at 8:35 pm

May 15, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Still 6-5 State, T9, 3 puts to go, weatherford is acing batters!
May 15, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Super diving catch by Hardy in LF for 2nd out, then he misjudges the next line drive… R on 2nd, next batter grounds out to 1st.
So Dawgs win 6-5!
May 15, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Good job nashdawg!
May 15, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Thanks Nash! I appreciate the updates.
May 15, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Back from the game. Small crowd but a very entertaining game. Bowen pitched well. And Weatherford got a W after allowing the tying runs to score.
May 16, 2008 at 12:13 am
has anyone else had trouble with the state athletics site…. explorer cant find the page… strange…
May 16, 2008 at 9:00 am
Did anybody see Dudy Noble on Sportscenter last night?
May 16, 2008 at 9:04 am
I missed that. Why was it on there?
May 16, 2008 at 9:23 am

May 16, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Go mets GG
May 16, 2008 at 1:05 pm
I’m listening to the Cubs pregame. “This old idiot” is doing a Pinella interview.
May 16, 2008 at 7:03 pm
I am not at DNF tonight. But, I am eating a #2 Sonic burger w a M&M Blast and listening to Jim call the gm, while staying w my dad tonight at the hospital.
Go Dawgs!
May 16, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Nash is that a #2 with mustard or with mayo? I get them mixed up but I think it is mustard.
Tupelo wins game two 5-4 on an RBI hit in the bottom of the 8th.
May 16, 2008 at 9:19 pm
#2 w mustard! U r correct, 2thdoc. That burger & shake is the beast combo meal to eat, for fast food.
Listening to the gm, it was tied 2up in T9. Intentional walk, then UArk loaded the bases, base hit made it 5-2, bases still loaded with 1 out. Now double play got us out of the inning. Going into B9,5-2 UArk
May 16, 2008 at 9:32 pm
5-4. Looking good. Don’t want to jinx the comeback
May 16, 2008 at 9:33 pm
5-5.
May 16, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Ducks on the pond!
May 16, 2008 at 9:35 pm

May 16, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Great comeback, Sneed bh, 6-5 Dawgs win!
May 16, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Tks 2thdoc, for joining me in calling the gm for double g-man in NY and others across the globe! Great win for our Diamond Dawgs!
May 16, 2008 at 9:44 pm
nash, how’s your dad been lately?
May 16, 2008 at 9:48 pm
You think Jack could sit in tomorrow for a few innings? I wonder if he’ll make his way to the microphone at some time during the game.
May 16, 2008 at 9:50 pm
It’s been 8 wks, 2thdoc, and really very little change in Dad. Still no speech, no real recognition of who we are. They are sitting him up everyday for 1-2 hours, but it’s troubling to see him just lie there and stare up are the ceiling. Tks for asking!
May 16, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Our prayers are with yall. I know it probably means alot to him having you there. Yall have a good weekend.
May 16, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Same here Nash. Thinking of yall.
May 17, 2008 at 7:07 am
Thanks for the updates, guys.
Nash, good luck with your dad.praying for your family, man.
May 17, 2008 at 11:21 am
I am praying for your family and you Nash as well. I am very pleased that John pitched so well yesterday. Go Dawgs
May 17, 2008 at 11:23 am
Double G, how’s New York
May 17, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Tks very much guys. Prayer is our only answer w Dad’s stroke.
Double g-man, I hope the rain holds off today so you & Zach get to be apart of historical Yankee Stadium.
I’m still at the hospital but plan to be at DNF for the ceremonies & game today! Go Dawgs! Sweep the Razorbacks
May 17, 2008 at 2:31 pm
No rain today. We lucked out. And yes, it’s been a great trip. The Yankees are down 6-3 in T8 though!
May 17, 2008 at 3:24 pm
That’s great, Gregg! I made it to DNF in time for the ceremonies.SEC Commissioner, Mike Slive is here. He gave Coach Polk a box of cigers. Very nice presentations from everyone, especially MSU President Vance Watson, a brand new, maroon Buick Lucerne
May 17, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Oh, one more thing, a giant number 1 is landscaped into CF!
May 17, 2008 at 4:28 pm
UArk put up a 4spot T1 & a 5spot T2, it’s 9-2 B3
May 17, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Wow. Maybe I need to retire. LOL!
Back from the game. Yankees lose 7-4, but we had a lot of fun. It’s the first time we’ve ever seen them lose in seven games. Oh well, that’s baseball.
Off to Little Italy for some grub. Please post a final if you can. How’s your dad?
May 17, 2008 at 5:42 pm
9-6 UArk, B6 0out, Ducks on the Pond!
May 17, 2008 at 5:48 pm
OM beat UK today, so UArk is out of the tourney as well this year. Now, this is gm is for us to take in a sweep!
May 17, 2008 at 5:57 pm
UArk is falling apart, 2 errors in B6, scored 4 runs, , 1out, 10-9 State! Ducks still on the pond!
I know you guys are enjoying NY, but this is the series of the season for the Diamond Dawgs!
May 17, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Bases left loaded, 10-9 State going T7
May 17, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Error throw by Duffy to second, attempting a throw out, allowed UArk to tie up the gm, 10up, going to B7
May 17, 2008 at 6:42 pm
I see why State has played poorly this year. Fundamental baseball play is not there… Way to many errors by infieldrs. Guys not paying attntn. I have never seen Polk’s players just standing arnd. Not covering bases. The thing that coach Polk has always instilled in his players, is an effortless, smooth running infield where players shifted and moved like clockwork! Missing in whatI see w this team.
Going to B8 13-10 UArk.
May 17, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Gm over, UArk wins, 15-10, State left bases loaded B9
May 17, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Thanks Nash! Maybe I should hand over the keys to the blog to you.
May 17, 2008 at 9:10 pm
I was there also. Sloppiest game I’ve seen in a long time. They sent out Polk well though.
May 17, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Oh no, double g-man, you cover things very. I just had a wknd free of driving back & forth to Nashville. And really nothing else going on, so I caught two gms. It helped my schedule w the series starting on Thurs nite. You’r the man! All-in-all, it was a good wknd of baseball for the dawgs. Oh, I did forget to mention 2 other gifts Mike Slive have CPolk… A nice framed plaque and a “planter”? Jim just commented he would have never imagined giving him a planter…? Polk also mentioned post gm that most of the former players left w their families aftr the gm and he did not get a chance to visit w them. Powell was there.
May 17, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Nash, I heard the post game show on the way home. Jim said Powell sat in on the broadcast for a little while. I may try to go back and find it on M2M. May be hard to do though. That was a marathon.
May 17, 2008 at 11:18 pm
I bet it was a also sad day for John Chaney and Mike Krzyzewski. As on of there own retired. Ron Polk was a member of the fraternity of coaches who look like the mascot of their team.
May 18, 2008 at 7:33 am
That’s hilarious, draws! You are so right. Polk fit in very well by looking like a scrawling bulldog!
May 18, 2008 at 8:57 am
That’s funny draws. I’ve always thought that too. Dr. Watson fits that mode.
May 18, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Double G what is happening to your Yankees
May 18, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Paying the refs to blow homerun calls for one thing.
May 19, 2008 at 8:46 am
Haha, that’s pretty good
May 19, 2008 at 8:56 am
The ump admits it.

“I (expletive) it up. I’m the one who thought it was a (expletive) foul ball.”
May 19, 2008 at 9:19 am
That’s baseball.
New blog coming shortly.
