Polk is ticked off bigtime; done with MSU

by

I’m just going to let you read what Ron Polk told me over the phone. He’s in Athens watching Georgia in the Super Regionals.

Wow! Brace yourselves. Remember, he pushed hard for Tommy Raffo to get the job.

“Unfortunately, our new athletic director slapped me in face and punched me in the stomach. He also slapped Tommy Raffo in the face and punched him in the stomach after 15 years of loyalty to Mississippi State. He did the same to our players, their parents and signees. I think I have more knowledge about the game than young Mr. Byrne.

“I want my name taken off the stadium and in the concourse until Greg Byrne is fired. And if they don’t do it, I will. And as soon as I get back to Starkville, I’m going to make sure the MSU Foundation is taken out of my will. And that’s a lot of money. I’m going to ask former players who give to quit. If you’re asking if I’m mad, then yes. I’m mad.

“I was up front with John Cohen, Pat Casey, Steve Smith all along. If Joe Torre got the job, I wouldn’t support him. I know more about Mississippi State baseball than anyone. Greg Byrne doesn’t know anything. Well, he’s about to find out what my name means.

“I love John, he’s a former player, but he knew how I felt. And when he walks into his new office, there will only be a desk and chair. No papers on the players or anything. I don’t like what’s done, but I guess he really wanted this job very bad. Good luck.

“Is this a good job? I don’t know. Kentucky has the lottery and we don’t. But I’ll tell you one thing, Greg Byrne may be the athletic director, but I’m the athletic director for baseball. I’ve been there for 31 years, and no one is more loyal than me.”

“Do you think Vince Dooley is glad he listened to me. Look what Dave Perno has done with Georgia and he’s close to getting them back to the world series. But with this hire, Greg Byrne has thrown 15 years away of Tommy’s coaching life and the four years he has played here. Is he the best candidate, I don’t know. I say give him four years. If he doesn’t get the job done, then fire him. But no, Greg Byrne wanted to make a splash. But he’s not a Mississippi State guy, and doesn’t understand what MSU baseball is all about. His honeymoon is over. He blew it.”

Polk then said he now wants to return to coaching as a volunteer assistant.

He was mad and his voice quivered. He said he won’t stay in Starkville, either. He also said he won’t attend tomorrow’s press conference. That’s probably a good thing.

Someone needs to tell Polk “that’s baseball”

This is very sorry and pathetic on Polk’s part. I can understand being mad, but this is uncalled for. I hope he moves to Arizona and is never seen at MSU again. Good riddance!

  2. topdog58 Says:

F U Polk!!!! You can go to hell with your ego! Screw you, you old egotistical bastard. You RUINED MSU baseball just as well as you built it up TWO DECADES AGO.

  3. dhdawg Says:

I’m really not surprised at Polk, considering his huge ego. I was very disappointed when they hired him back when McMahon left. Ithought that his name should have been taken off the stadium when he took the Georgia job. GOOD RIDDANCE!!!!!!

  4. bigdraws Says:

What a complete idiot. I said all along he would end up doing something like this. Guess what Polk. You were hired by State as the COACH. Not the friggin AD. I’m as pissed at Polk right now as he is at Byrne. Look here. If you didn’t want someone else hired you shouldn’t have quit. But praise the lord you did. This is complete BS. Just because you tried to hold a knife to the new AD’s throat and he didn’t give in. You think you’ve got to throw a temper tantrum like a two year old. Get the hell out of here.

  5. bigdraws Says:

Eh um…. Polk, I stood behind you the whole time after you started this crap a few months ago. What do I get for having your back? I get to look like a complete idiot. Just like you.

  6. bigdraws Says:

I really think he’s lost his mind.

  7. Ron Polk embarasses self, MSU « Shane’s Drivel Says:

[…] Veazey’s blog was just the start. Check out what Ron has said through Greg Ellis’ blog. Polk says he’ll remove the MSU foundation from his will and remove all player information […]

  8. farley662 Says:

Bravo Coach Polk! I honestly think his time has passed, but I admire the hell outta him for sticking up for what he believes in. It’s time someone stood up to the Bulldog Cash and their money hungry ways. We are no longer treated like fans of the People’s University, but as bank account numbers just like the OM people do their fans. I say the hell with all of em just like Polk.

  9. bigdraws Says:

Not to mention what an awkward situation he’s put the fanbase and players in.

  10. bigdraws Says:

He’s already said what he believes in. There’s no need to show the lack of class you have. There’s ways to do stuff without acting like that. That’s totally out of line.

  11. bigdraws Says:

He’s all about being an example for his kids. What kind of an example does this show? He actually said he thought he was the AD for baseball. The man is out of touch with reality.

  12. farley662 Says:

I’d have made these comments at the press conference if it was me. He’s going to hit em where it hurts these new folks the most, in the bank account.

  13. bigdraws Says:

And that would have been even more stupid then doing it this way. It would be an even bigger slap in the face to Cohen. He keeps saying how his players were betrayed. I happen to know that players and ex-players were consulted during the search.

  14. farley662 Says:

He does have some points. Byrne is not a MSU guy, he wanted to make a splash. I’m not and still am not sold on Byrne and you guys know how much I liked Polk. I just admire him for having the balls to say what he wanted.

  15. farley662 Says:

But, it’s not ok for a man to express how he feels? The hell with that. If I was him, I’d never come back if I felt as betrayed as he does. I still think we are getting closer and closer to being OM everyday.

  16. bigdraws Says:

He said it many, many, many, many, many times. We got the point a loooooong time ago. Also, I thought you despised Polk.

  17. Blake Says:

But why clean out your office w/ no help at all to the new coach? So you didn’t like the hire. But why put guy that were YOUR PLAYERS at a disadvantage just because you do not like your favorite guy not getting the job?

I can understand being disappointed. I can understand being mad even. But not going to lengths to almost sabotage the program.

Byrne might not be a MSU guy. But he still wants to keep his job. And it looked like he made the hire that most fans on the boards/blogs wanted too.

  18. bigdraws Says:

He didn’t get his way, and he acted like a two year old. That’s no way for a grown man to represent himself.

  19. farley662 Says:

I do. You know I do. Hell, everyone knows I do. I like the SOB a hell of alot more now. If I flipped out on someone like this you bastards would think it’s the greatest thing ever. See Target, OPC, Liberty Bowl, etc.

  20. farley662 Says:

Draws, you know of certain people in a Van that act like that all the time you liying mofo!

  21. bigdraws Says:

So you acting like a nut in public, makes what Polk said a good idea. I see now.

  22. farley662 Says:

No, but he said what he wanted. He didn’t do the pussy thing and be PC. That’s what a man would do. Stand up when he believes he’s been wronged. That’s the only damn thing that’s keeping me going. Not backing down a damn inch to anyone.

  23. bigdraws Says:

All I’m saying is he handled himself in a very unprofessional manor. And he put a lot of people in very tough situations.

  24. bigdraws Says:

I couldn’t pound this into your head if I had a hammer. Read this…..
Everyone knew how he felt. He said it aaaaaalll the time. He didn’t have to act like this. It’s ok to express your feelings. But this is nuts.

  25. farley662 Says:

You and your hammer can kiss my irrational ass!

  26. bigdraws Says:

    Thanks.

  27. farley662 Says:

Going to have a XX’s now. Just sent you a text message buddy. How’s the wife?

  28. bigdraws Says:

Prolly warn out. She’s doing the last night at VBS. Got your message. Thanks a lot.

  29. whitmack Says:

Polk has lost his ever-lovin’ mind! what an egotistical sack of crap. I hope we do take his name off of the stadium!

  30. charleston11 Says:

Who cares if his name comes off the stadium? I see many players transferring to wherever Raffo ends up.

  31. dawgface52 Says:

Well if our new AD was trying to make a splash, at least he did it with a proven winner and a former MSU guy. What more do you want? Polk is an idiot. He will have very few supporters from this point forward. I hope he moves to AZ as promised and never steps foot on our campus again!

  32. redtoolman Says:

You know if Polk had really wanted to give Raffo a shot why didn’t he resign after The World Series last year? I think a lot of people would have been willing to give Raffo a shot then rather than coming off the crappy year that they had this year. Timing is everything. Raffo not getting the job is as much Polk’s fault as anything. If he wants to be mad then he better be mad at himself first. He is the one that screwed Raffo.

  33. fun2bmaroon Says:

Well, as the headlines say…” Polk is done with MSU”….and so he should be…..he retired last month…got a box of cigars, a new car to drive to Arizona……a bunch of La-La-foo-foo presents covered in wrappings….in other words,,,,,he’s the hell out !! Over…..Finished….Kaput…..Done……No different than a wonderful professor that has been at our cow college for umpteen years….same difference….so….shut your face, skipper……I do believe that our new Athletics Director knows what he’s doing and we should be there to support him….Let this new fellow take charge and show us what MSU baseball is and should be…..another money maker of an athletics division…..And, good grief….take the old skipper’s name down if he wants it down……puss…….

  34. warbirdz44 Says:

Ron Polk can go play a game of hide and go F yourself.

  35. gmvbham7 Says:

Can Polk create any bigger messes? If you are a sports journalist you could fill up the entire newspaper with potential topics. I feel sorry for Bryne, Cohen and anybody else who has to answer the questions concerning a former coach who is acting irrational and like someone who has a mental illness. Polk’s comments don’t make sense when looked at in totality. Where do you start? He doesn’t even know (after 15 years with the guy) if Raffo is the best candidate but he should get the job anyway. This isn’t the Sopranos where the mob boss picks his successor. He loves Cohen but won’t leave him anything but a chair and desk (attention MSU security and President Watson – lock doors). What an example he is making to kids and players everywhere. The man needs some serious help.

  36. cnd46 Says:

I have respected Coach Polk for a long time until today. I know he said he wouldn’t like if Raffo didn’t get the job, but I never thought he would pull a stunt like this. It’s like listening to a two year old that you put in timeout or something. I support Greg because he went out and found who he thinks would be the best for MSU, I thought Polk would understand that, but not anymore, he is only concerned about himself and I do NOT like that.

  37. cnd46 Says:

And by the way, welcome John Cohen back to the MSU family

  38. hailstate Says:

Everybody would love to go off and speak their mind when there’s nothing to lose. I don’t fault him for the first paragraph. But the whole screw the program thing is beyond unprofessional.

  39. bigdraws Says:

I agree cnd46. We’re losing the fact that we got a new coach. We welcome you with open arms John.

  40. warbirdz44 Says:

Gregg, you should change the graphic at the top of the blog and edit Polk’s ass out.

  41. charleston11 Says:

This should not have been a shock to Raffo and the other assistants. Cohen resigned at UK this morning and they name a coach by noon.

  42. bigdraws Says:

Put a picture of a turkey leg in his place.

  43. bigdraws Says:

    Gotta love this gem.

I’ve been there for 31 years, and no one is more loyal than me.”

Aren’t you the guy who “retired” then went and coached another SEC team? I work with a former player of his. Can’t wait to see him on Monday.

  44. warbirdz44 Says:

Here’s another quote not mentioned in the blog:

“Now he’s got me on the war path and all I can do is hurt him,” Polk said of Byrne in a phone interview with The Associated Press from Athens, Ga., where he is watching Georgia play North Carolina State in an NCAA super regional. “I’m going to do everything I can to make his life miserable.”

  45. Gregg Ellis Says:

What a day. Golf, new baseball coach and Polk. Wow!

  46. wbbarnes Says:

I am an avid Rebel fan but even I am insulted at Polk’s egotism. He gave up on his team this year and tied to ride out his last few months getting a free pay check. I hope that the MSU faithful show him that his “name” is not as powerful in Starkville as he believes it is. However, if dawg fans love him that much then let him talk but I get the feeling that most of them don’t.

  47. bcdog Says:

Wins and Losses will be forgotten…classless acts never are. As a coaches son, I have admired Coach Polk for years, but legacy is not only about wins and losses…it is about how you conduct yourself. So sad to see a great legacy substantially weakened in one tirade.

  48. 2thdoc Says:

Byrne for President ’08. Got to send him some emails of support and Cohen will have plenty on his side…including a new desk without the cigar stains.

  49. nashdawg Says:

wow…I just got in from Nashville this evening…didn’t check the blog via Blackberry this trip. Honestly, guys, I have no comment except that I am stunned at the turn of events. And double G-man, I thought single g Byrne told you he was going to UK for a funeral? Looks like he wasn’t so truthful…:(

  50. thespear Says:

Dream on Polk…. like you have that kind of influence anymore…. every Bulldog Club member knows you flipped out a long time ago… way to lose what little respect you had!!!

  51. carwwest Says:

wow! i still consider myself a young adult, i know if i talked like that about a place a supposedly loved and was “loyal” to…..i would look back in shame….that was like playing a card game with my 6 year old cousin who is the worst loser i know (prior to today)…..but to go as far as telling people how much money you ARENT going to give them and saying there is a war path……that sounds like a broken man honestly….i grew up watching MSU polk baseball and this has seriously made me question a lot about his legacy….it really is a shame he would do this to a former player in cohen…..that being said, welcome John, its great to have you back!!!

  52. skylerdog Says:

Even if Polk comes back and apologizes for his actions, I have lost all respect for him. He heard the news and reacted by showing his true feelings about the situation. If we can win a championship (probably at any level) at any sport under Byrnes, we won’t miss Polk’s vast riches left in MSU’s will.

  53. nashdawg Says:

    Only time will tell…

  54. bigdraws Says:

I wish I had Byrnes email.

  55. bigdraws Says:

Nevermind. Found it and sent it.

  56. bulldogbil Says:

    Speaking of loyalty…
I just read that Cohen turned down $600k for ten years by kentucky…to come back to State…
Do you think Polk would have left Georgia if offered that ??

  57. 2thdoc Says:

What a ridiculous threat. I can just picture Polk up on a super ladder trying to take his name off of the stadium with a hammer and chisel all while flicking ashes from his cigar on Greg Byrne and John Cohen.

Gregg, can you talk to the cartoom drawing department so this visual can be brought to life.

  58. bleedmaroon Says:

    classless. I’m embarassed.

  59. thingreenline Says:

If Polk is the “athletic director of baseball,” then he knows what shape the program is in since he came back (minus the fluke CWS run). They should take his damn name off the stadium at the press conference when they announce the new coach.

I guess Polk looks at himself as a Don Corleone. He thinks he should name his replacement everytime he leaves somewhere, then when it doesn’t work out, he’ll make someone’s life miserable? What’s he gonna do, leave a horse head in Byrne’s bed?

The man seriously needs to get laid. No wife, no kids, no life outside of baseball other than getting breakfast every morning at Hardee’s. Go the extra mile and take a trip to Las Vegas on your way to Arizona, Polk. If you’re not gonna give MSU any money, you might as well pay a single mom.

And what a loyal man Polk is. No support of the new coach, not gonna leave anything for him to use to evaluate his players, look like a major jackass on the way out to divert attention from the fact that someone is coming in that may bring the program back to where it should be. You’re mighty loyal to MSU baseball, Polk! Now get the f**k out!!

  60. gratisdinero Says:

From a Rebel- You guys got a good one in John Cohen! The dust up from the exiting staff will be long forgotten when the Dawgs start making noise next season. Look forward to some great baseball in Mississippi!!!!

  61. bigdraws Says:

Wooooooooooohoooooooo!!! You said it al TGL!!! How do ya really feel! LOL!!! And thanks grat.

  62. Braves Dawg Says:

    LMAO TGL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Raffo must have had some pictures of Polk stump breaking a cow!

  63. bradlocke Says:

Gosh, you hate to see the good ol’ boy coaching network get the shaft like that, don’t you? Byrne’s job was to hire the best candidate, and he did.

  64. 2thdoc Says:

Polk is/was a legend but I can’t help but think getting thrown out of all of the games this year was not just sticking up for the players but trying to prove a point that he can persuade any situation. There is a time and place for everything but loyalty and support for Raffo could have been done without demeening others(Byrne’s) ability to make decisions.

Packing up his toys and going home is also fine but threatening someone else and MSU because the majority of fans don’t agree is something a public figure just can’t do outside 3rd world countries. He has made this bed and it will be interesting to see if he will sleep in it, just get a new bed, or refuse to ever sleep at all. It is really sad to see how someone call fall so far from greatness when the situation was perfect to ride off into the sunset with a fishing boat, several boxes of free cigars, and adoring fans.

Raffo will certainly find a good coaching position with Polk’s support…I just wish Polk would have accepted this when he found out Byrne prolly doesn’t like the same cigars as LT. Good memories of Polk will not be forgotten but this memory will last just as long.

  65. tishvegas84 Says:

Hate what happened to Raffo. Had class with him when I was in school at MSU. Great Guy!!! He should/will push this under the rug and move on. He’ll land a good gig somewhere. He’ll get his shot to show how good a coach he can be. As for Polk, if I were Byrne the sun wouldn’t set on my A#@ before I personally removed Polks name from the Stadium. Polk spent too much time worried/arguing with the NCAA to field teams to be competitive in this league. It seemed to me that while he was pissed at the NCAA other teams were catching up to us and then passing us. I’m through with Polk, MSU don’t need any of his money or suggestions!!!!!
