Tuesday Press Conference

By Brad Locke

Hello, Bulldog fans. Let me first say how excited I am to be covering this beat. This is Day 1, with many more to come. I will give a formal introduction later.

For now, some tidbits from today’s press conference.

• Even though he started at Georgia Tech last year, there is some mystery surrounding Louisiana Tech QB Taylor Bennett. The senior transferred in this year and was allowed to play immediately after receiving an academic waiver from the NCAA (he’s going for a master’s). He had a solid 2007, but with him being with a new team and in a new offense, MSU coach Sylvester Croom isn’t sure what to expect Saturday.

“Based on what we think they’re going to do, I think it’ll be a different role, particularly with them having the kind of running back (Patrick Jackson) they have,” Croom said. “It’s pretty hard to evaluate.”

More on Bennett later this week.

• DT Charles Burns and WR Jamayel Smith will both sit out practice today with tendinitis. They should return to the field tomorrow.

• LT Derek Sherrod’s status is still unclear. Croom is holding out hope for a Thursday return to the practice field. “If he’s practicing Thursday, he’ll start.” If not, the plan is still to move starting RT Mark Melichar into Sherrod’s slot and give Quentin Saulsberry the nod at LT.

• Croom on freshman WR O’Neal Wilder, who’s out 4-6 weeks with a dislocated knee: “He definitely had some great potential. Outstanding feet, great hands, but had a lot to learn. So now it’s going to be starting all over with him.”

• A couple of positions are much less cause for concern than they were at the start of camp: Fullback and tight end. On the latter, Croom said, “I think we are equal to last year at this point, and in some areas maybe ahead at that position.” Good news for an already dangerous running game.

• Croom on Tech’s Jackson: “A very solid SEC-looking running back. Good change of direction, good burst into the hole, good vision. He has the potential to make big plays any time he touches the football.”

Thanks Brad. Good stuff. Tough news about Wilder. He could have stretched the field with his speed.

  2. bb67 Says:

Hey Brad, congratulations on your new job. This blog is the reason why a lot of work does not get done in north Mississippi.

  3. meridiandog Says:

    Brad:

Thanks for picking up the ball and running with it, Bud.

We wish great things for you.

    GO DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. meridiandog Says:

Maybe we’ll be ok without Wilder.

Can he redshirt? 4-6 weeks off the field pushes him toward the middle of the season. If we are struggling so much that we must have him by then, we’ll have big problems. Maybe he can wait until next year.

  5. carwwest Says:

good stuff brad…congrats on the new job…..i would think wilder would redshirt but thats just me…..my main concern is still sherrod….we need him bad….

  6. BirdZ! Says:

That’s prolly the best option, meridian. Especially since Croom said he still has a lot to learn.

  7. jcdawgman18 Says:

Welcome, Brad. Glad to have you aboard. Should be a fun ride.

Wilder can and I think probably will redshirt.

Notice what Coach Croom said about our TEs. That says one thing to me: He is really, really impressed with Marcus Green.

  8. jcdawgman18 Says:

Sherrod is a concern, but he should be okay. I’m not that worried about it for this game, but down the road (when we will need him in pass protection) we need him to be healthy. I think Melichar is a very capable sub as a run blocker over there, which is why I think he will be fine at right tackle this year.

  9. farley662 Says:

    The Cardinals suck.

  10. jmbulldog Says:

    Welcome Brad.

I agree with everyone that thinks Wilder should probably redshirt. And I hope our TE play is as good as he thinks…i always think TE play is important for any offense

  11. Jimmy Barbee Says:

Well it didn’t take Farley long to establish himself with the new Man coming in. Started right off making nasty remarks about Mr. Locke’s pro baseball team. He did the same thing about the Ole Miss baseball team when they were playing in the tournments last season.

  12. rebelnate Says:

Brad you will find out quick that thingreenline and warbirdz are assholes!

  13. maxdawg Says:

Welcome Brad good luck in here.

  14. 2thdoc Says:

Welcome Brad. If it is raining in Ruston ask Gregg if you can borrow one of his caps. It would keep the whole pressbox dry. Seriously though, welcome again and have fun with the blog.

  15. Brad Locke Says:

Having visited this blog often, I kind of know what to expect out of some of you. I thank you for the warm reception – especially you, Farley. ;)

Croom did cite Green’s strong practices of late. I’ll check back with y’all later.

  16. thingreenline Says:

Coming from you, nate, that’s hilarious.

After initially being hated by everyone (Nategate!), you have now become the biggest suck-up in the group.

  17. meridiandog Says:

I can’t understand what kind of foot infection would keep Derek out so long, but we need this guy on the field.

    What does Payton say?

Oh yeah, “Rub some dirt on it, bro.”

Had a Jr High Coach, about a hundred years back who said, “Work through it.” He also said, “You must be agile, motile and hostile.”

    Regardless,

    GO DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. carwwest Says:

my buddy plays for o-line for the division school i go to and he had a foot infection last year that put him in the hospital and kept him out of two games…cant remember what it was called and i dont know what sherrod has…..but i think melichar will do fine this game but im wanting sherrod to get the most game experience he can at his new position before sec play starts…..

  19. carwwest Says:

    *division II school…sorry

  20. dawgface52 Says:

Welcome Brad! Just keep the ball rolling and we will be happy. Good luck.:)

  21. nashdawg Says:

Welcome Brad…this blog is a famous one across the globe and sporting world. With updates like you have provided in your first blog, not to worry…you’ll do fine. Keep ‘em coming!

  22. cnd46 Says:

Welcome Brad, I hope you do a good job and I look forward to your writings and the blog. Can’t wait for some football!

  23. tebmsu97 Says:

    Welcome aboard Brad.

I hope we make use of the TE, it seems that has always been an under utilized position by State. I hope Sherrod starts, he needs all the reps he can get as well as letting Melichar settle in at his slot.

  24. warbirdz44 Says:

“Brad you will find out quick that thingreenline and warbirdz are assholes!”

Thanks Nate, you just proved that you’re one too!

  25. darkcooger Says:

Welcome, Brad. Good to know that the blog will continue! It distracts some of us in North Alabama, as well. ;)
