A sampling of the many, many quotes I painstakingly transcribed from today’s press conference.
• Freshman PG Dee Bost: “Some of (the upperclassmen) are probably thinking in the back of their minds, it’s just a freshman, I’ve been here, what does he know? But deep down inside, they’ll listen because I’m the point guard. I’m the floor leader, and I’ve got to get the ball to them.”
• Sophomore F/C Elgin Bailey: “Everyone is catching up with everything, catching up quick, we don’t have to slow down for anyone.”
• Sophomore F Kodi Augustus: “This year we’ve got a lot of dudes that are hungry, we have to work. We’re all competing for a spot right now in practice. I think this year’s team, we’ll probably be a little quicker up and down the floor, we can run better, run faster.”
• Junior F Jacquiese Holcombe (juco transfer): “We’ve been hearing a lot around campus that we’re young and whatnot, but I don’t really think that matters. I don’t think it matters at all. At all.”
• Sophomore G Riley Benock: “There’s a lot of competition (for starting spots), and any time you have that competition it’s going to be making you better every day. Because they know that if they don’t bring it one day that somebody else is going to have it. And that might be the difference in five or 10 minutes a game.”
• Freshman F Romero Osby: “The coaches always pull me aside and talk about learning on the fly, because I kind of have to grow up fast.”
• Freshman G Twany Beckham: “I think we’re very versatile. We’ve got a lot of people that can drive. We’ve got people that can shoot it. I think we’re going to be able to put up a lot of points this year, I know a lot of people aren’t expecting us to be able to.”
• Sophomore G/F Ravern Johnson: “Every day in practice, everybody goes hard. The new guys coming in, they don’t have no problem working hard.”
• Coach Rick Stansbury, on Bost: “His adjustment will be, he’s 163 pounds. I think he’s got some toughness with that, but he’s just not a big, bulky kid, and the strength level at times may be a factor. But I think he’s got a chance to be a terrific player.”
• Stansbury on his team’s style of play: “We’re not doing anything different than we’ve always done: We’re going to defend, we’re going to rebound. We’re going to find people who can do that one way or the other.”

Like the confidence from Bost. Kid was prep school player of the year, so it’s not just all talk.

I want to see Brandon Bolen earn some more playing time. He played a little too timid when he got on the court last year, pretty much always passing the ball away even when he had a wide open shot. Hey Brandon, are you listening? Shoot the ball, buddy!
