MSU’s Jamont Gordon and Charles Rhodes have been named finalists for the Howell Trophy, presented annually to the top men’s college basketball player in Mississippi.
The winner will be announced Monday in Tupelo.
Also making the cut was Dwayne Curtis of Ole Miss.
March 24, 2008 at 1:04 pm |
no shock there.
March 24, 2008 at 1:05 pm |
And the winner is . . . . . . . .
Charles Rhodes!!
March 24, 2008 at 1:09 pm |
CHARLES RHODES won this award with his play over the last half of the season. He was one word – DOMINANT.
March 24, 2008 at 1:20 pm |
What about Swat? He had just as big of an impact as these 3.
March 24, 2008 at 1:22 pm |
Except that Wednesday night when they let Ole Miss beat them.
March 24, 2008 at 1:23 pm |
Curtis should not be there. It should be all Bulldogs representing this award. The highest quality player are on that squad.
March 24, 2008 at 3:05 pm |
I have no problem with Curtis being on. I certainly think he is deserving.
March 24, 2008 at 3:13 pm |
Your hair grow back yet GG? Got that chia pet look going now?
March 24, 2008 at 3:40 pm |
GG, shhhhhh…I think you like that NCAA logo GG, still got it up 🙂
C-Rhodes deserves it
March 24, 2008 at 3:45 pm |
I voted C-Rhodes. I just think he’s the best player.
Hair is starting to grow out.
March 24, 2008 at 3:46 pm |
I agree. I think the three best players in the state are Gordon, Rhodes and VarnaRdo. But you’ve gotta please the dark side. On that note, I would have put Warren ahead of Curtis.
March 24, 2008 at 3:49 pm |
Well, Warren faded toward the end, and Curtis never did. He had the points and rebounds, where Varnado just had the blocks.
Everyone, in unison, say good-bye to the NCAA logo!
March 24, 2008 at 4:35 pm |
Gregg, Varnado had more blocks then any other D1 player
Dewayne Curtis on the other hand is a solid player.
March 24, 2008 at 4:56 pm |
bye NCAA logo you sucked
March 24, 2008 at 6:34 pm |
Most of this probably has been said already, but I’m just getting caught up. Did anyone ask Stans why he went to a man to man defense when the game was tied at 52? If so, what was his answer? He did as well as he ever has in coaching yesterday, up until the point that he got impatient with the zone. You just can’t guard those guys one on one. Also, why didn’t Ravern Johnson get more of a nod over Barry? They were physical with Barry, but Barry was scared the whole game. Johnson wasn’t. Also, the game turned during the 8 minute timeout when Calipari started working the refs. When he realized that he was in a game, he started badgering them. Calipari is as sleazy and cocky as they come.
– Just tired and frustrated
March 24, 2008 at 7:46 pm |
dc31, they were in a man the entire the second half due to Memphis’ effectiveness from 3-point range.
March 24, 2008 at 8:46 pm |
FYI McDonald’s Slam Dunk Contest with Scotty Hopson Tuesday night on ESPN2
Don’t know what time.
March 24, 2008 at 10:24 pm |
Yep, my brother and I commented that we were going to have to come out of that zone and try our best to man up against them because they were draining the open 3. Nice adjustment by Stans in the 2nd half. Who knew that their young freshman would come in off the bench and drain the deep ball with such effectiveness.
March 25, 2008 at 9:25 am |
Curtis and the Rebels are still playing basketball.
March 25, 2008 at 9:33 am |
Really, that competition is stiff in the NIT huh? So now y’all are actually proud to be in the NIT. Like that somehow is more prestigious and gets more media coverage than the NCAA Tournament. Typical Ole Miss attitude, you’d be bragging if they were playing pick up games on Front Street. Come on JB, get over yourself.
March 25, 2008 at 9:50 am |
BDawg: They could even make it to Madison Square Garden, with a few breaks. Anyway NIT is better than staying at home. In reality, the Rebs should have been in that NCAA. They had wins over several teams that made the trip. Anyway, its over now, maybe better next season. Not bragging, just stating the facts.
Congrats to Miss State on a successful season.
March 25, 2008 at 9:54 am |
If Ole Miss wins the NIT, you think Reed’s will print up T-Shirts proclaiming:
“WE’RE NO. 66!!!”
I’ll have to admit that I was a little excited that MSU went to MSG last year for the NIT final four.
March 25, 2008 at 10:04 am |
Stop trying to back track after you take a cheap shot JB. Sure its nice to go to the NIT if you not good enough to be in the NCAA Tournament, but I’d rather be one and done in the tournament than go to the NIT. At least we had the opportunity. Ole Most wasn’t good enough to make the NCAA Tournament or else they would be there, stop crying over “could of” “should of”. Just stating the facts.

JB you are starting to act like the old Idiot that you are
March 25, 2008 at 10:16 am |
You come on a MSU blog and make the statement, “Curtis and the Rebels are still playing basketball” and try to say that’s not a cheap shot. Not even taking into account the topic. BS! Everyone knows your jab and retract style. You can pull that tired rhetoric on somebody else.

I believe Charles Rhodes should get this award. No one has played better the last part of the season and in the SEC. Rhodes has improved his game this year and came back and worked on the necessary things needed to help his team make it to the second round of the NCAA. One factor you must look at in choosing a winner between Jordon and Rhodes, that is that Jordon plays point guard which means he has the opportunity to decide if he wants to shoot or pass, therefore he as the opportunity to decide if a team mate will get the ball to score or not. Most post players score points off self made shots or rebounds, therefore the ability to score inside is a powerful skill to have and charles Rhodes outscored Jordon on the nights when Mississippi state needed him the most. Also its hard to score when your coach does not tell the point guard to pass it especially when you are wide open after you have blocked a shot and ran the floor. Where’s the leadership, also there is no me, myself and I in team.
March 25, 2008 at 12:55 pm |
Looks like we’re still in the mix for Scotty, but he’ll wait until the television conference the day of signing to decide. He’ll probably do the thing where he pulls the hat out of the bag and puts it on. I hope it’s a maroon hat, that kid has serious skills.
March 26, 2008 at 6:20 am |
You gotta be kidding me JB. You said a week ago you were pulling for State. Running that old “We’re all from MS” line. Now you’re laughing because we were put out by a #1 seed in the REAL tourney. BTW, we were a 3pt away from sending it into overtime. Let me run down you’re past big three sports seasons.
#1 baseball = No Omaha as usual
#2 football = 0-8…..Bwahahaha
#3 basketball = Nit. Looks like making it to the tourney is now your bb Omaha.
March 26, 2008 at 7:55 am |
draws, I am not laughing because State got beat by Memphis. I was pulling for the dawgs and still do, when Ole Miss is not in the game. That Memphis barbecue thing was just a joke, nothing provoctive intended, again just joking. I did take some shots by the opposition, but taking it. Anyway, draws nice to hear from you again, and nothing harmful intended in my postings.
March 26, 2008 at 8:17 am |
Master Bull**** Artist! Go ahead and kiss up to Draws all you want. We know your game all too well. You made the BBQ crack and ran like a girl. Just a joke my PA2.
March 26, 2008 at 10:55 am |
This is for you JB.
