Standout Tupelo quarterback Chris Garrett has decided he wants to play his college football at LSU.
He informed Tigers coach Les Miles of his decision on Wednesday morning.
“He’s been praying about it for weeks, and he thinks this is what’s best for his future and career,” his father, David Garrett told me this morning. “It’s tough for him, because he’s been a Mississippi State fan his entire life. He loves Coach Croom and the staff, but just feels LSU is what’s best for his future and chance to play in the NFL.”
He went on to say how tough it’s been for the entire family, especially considering Chris’ older brother is already at Mississippi State.
Garrett committed to MSU last October and has since received five other offers, including Ole Miss, Florida State, Nebraska and Colorado. And like he originally planned to do at Mississippi State, Garrett will enroll at LSU in January of 2009.
“I just don’t want people to think he’s not a man of his word,” David Garrett said. “He really struggled with the decision. He committed to State when he was 16, but when other opportunities began to open, he realized LSU was the right fit. Again, you can’t imagine how tough it’s been.”

Once I gave someone my word, no I have not. If there was any doubt, he shouldn’t have committed to State. It’s like all of our other big time recruits, he took the easy way out. Instead of helping build something, he’s going to go somewhere else where he’ll have to hope the Head isn’t lying to him. I can’t say that I blame Chris for what he has done. Still, I’m not sure what he thinks LSU and Miles are going to do for his NFL stock. I’m trying hard to remember a bona fide NFL QB that has come out of Baton Rogue.
I am also of the opinion that keeping your word is a lost priority in our culture. One thing my dad taught me early on is to be very careful of what I say and what I commit to do. Chris will learn this lesson, I’m sure, but I wish it didn’t have to come at our expense.
Facing the facts, folks: no high school QB with aspirations of championships and statistics would choose MSU right now. Family loyalty isn’t trustworthy, either. We will have to make due with what we have and defy the odds from the bottom up.

This is really disheartening news. We dont’ know good Garrett would’ve really been at MSU, but we’ll never be able to sign an elite QB that will take our program beyond the mediocre level (and that’s generous), if we couldn’t get this one. Seriously, how many QBs of Garret’s caliber have been born and raised Dawgs? Further, assuming arguendo that there’s been a few, how many of their families were as supportive and actively involved in MSU athletics as Garret’s? We’re not talking about any passive or fair weather fans here. For Christ’s sake, his dad is the local chairman of an organization that’s purpose is to facilitate success in MSU athletics.
And on that note, how does pops expect people to donate money for the cause when he and his son don’t even see it as the right fit for him? And boy that’ll really help us sell MSU to other recruits.
Nobody that loves MSU goes to play for another school, especially an SEC West school, so don’t give me that. I understand they’re most interested in his future. If they feel LSU is in his best interest, then that’s what he should do, but either commit or don’t. It’s bad enough not getting the kid to State, but for him to commit and decommit is just a slap in the face. So what if he was only 16, his parents should never have allowed this to happen.

I think its hilarious how “he prayed about a lot.” What a coincidence that God ‘lead’ Garrett to a team that just so happened to win the National Championship this past year instead of a team with a Coach as morally upstanding as Croom. Its funny how in the south people think that if they say “well i prayed about it a lot and this is where i think God wants me to be” then it is totally acceptable. I’m not questioning Garett’s faith, but i think its a crock of sh*t. I hope he sits on the bench for 4 years straight and never touches the field.

Jamarcus Russell is not a bona fide NFL QB. He may be one day, but I seriously doubt it. Anyone who is 6’7″ and can throw the ball 90 yards is going to be drafted on potential, but being a first round pick doesn’t equate to success. He will languish with the Raiders for a little while, but will ultimately ride out the same fate as the Todd Marinovich’s and Ryan Leaf’s of the world.

The bottom line is, when it came down to it, Garett could talk the talk, but he couldn’t walk the walk. Then watch our “offense.” Which one would you rather play for if you’re supposed to be a legitimate, big time QB with NFL hopes someday? For those women who may be reading this, let me take a moment to explain “The Move.” Men know exactly what their bowels are up to at any given second. And when the time comes to empty the cache, a sequence of physiological events occur that can not be stopped under any circumstances. There are no sure things in the minds of 17 year olds. I have one and I know this to be true. Hell, my son was even thinking about going to that Oxford school for a time.
Even Chris’s decision to go to LSU is probably not a sure thing. Who knows? I know one thing, I have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, hearing this news.

I’ve seen him play several times. It’s not that big of a loss. Personally, I think that if State can sign Dionte Payne and Chad Bumphis out of Tupelo, they’ll be doing a lot better. Let Chris go the route of Blake Barnes. Ask the Baldwyn standout how going out of state worked out for him. What’s really sad is how little our high school football players regard their future. What if football doesn’t work out? Go to an in-state school and you’ll be making great contacts for life. Go out of state and your contacts are useless if you come back to Mississippi.

I’ve been a State fan my whole life but frankly, if I had to choose between State and LSU to pursue my football and academic careers, I’d choose LSU. More money is put into that program. You know that you’ll get the exposure each and every week. You know that you’ll get the necessary facilities and coaching deserved. Hell, at our school, we’re constantly worried if our coaches will leave for money. The main thing they’re worried about is if they’re coaches will take HEAD coaching jobs elsewhere. LSU is a better program than what we have and I don’t blame Chris one bit for going there. You guys should just grow up and get over it.

Sorry Mr. Garrett (roastbeef1), but it sounds like he got talked into going to a better program with hopes of going to the NFL, only to find out there’ll be 1-2 other QB’s there just as good or better than him. Then, his butt will be on the bench, providing moral support to a better program, wishing he went somewhere he’d be able to actually play.
Of course Les Miles said anything to get him awaw from MSU. Why let a team in the SEC West build momentum when you can take away a key “committment?”

i have and will be a state fan till the day i die but this move doesnt surprise me at all…..as soon as LSU and other top teir schools started recruiting him, you could tell in his interviews that he probably wasnt going to come here…..especially when he changed his solid to a “soft” commit……i am disheartened that we didnt get him but im not going to hold it against him to where i hope he fails…..i do think the hat tricked told him whatever he wanted to hear which is what a lot of college coaches do…..i was heavily recruited by memphis, ole miss, MTSU, and alabama and pretty much they all told me exactly what they thought i wanted to hear and for a high school kid, it was hard to seperate the real $hit from the bull$hit……one thing that i do see now though is our chances of getting bumphis greatly diminished, he’ll probably go out of state also now…..i do believe that if we can keep winning games and bowl games, we will recieve a lot more interest from better athletes…..but offensively we are going to have to fire woody because nobody wants to come play for an “O-ffensive” offense…..especially QBs…..

A program that goes 10-2 every year or a program that *might* win 6 or 7 under the current regime, and that’s if you’re lucky. A team with lots of talented players around you to keep you upright and throw the ball to or a team with some decent players that will only keep you upright some of the time (since you have no mobility) and WRs incapable of getting separation with bricks for hands? A program that gets multiple players drafted on the first day every year or a program that gets a first day player maybe once ever 2-4 years if we’re lucky? Offensive coaches that can effectively develop players and mix up the playcalling or offensive coaches that thought Money Mike was the answer at QB and are among the most conservative in all of college football? It’s no real choice. So who’s really the assclown? And after seeing Garrett play, I’m not convinced he’s the elite QB everyone thinks. He’s immobile, not very accurate, nor has a cannon for an arm.

Great point carwwest. Honoring ones commitment is the right thing to do. However, I’m not sure many of us would have faired much better if National Championship Schools came knocking on the door. If we are legit 5* recruits, we are probably not going to play for Ole Miss, MS State or USM for that matter – unless our Dad was Archie Manning or something. I’d like to think that when I was 16 or 17 that I would have had the kind of character required to stick to my commitments. Yet, I remember how much my Mom and Dad could count on my word come Friday and Saturday night.
That being said, the young man’s family is mostly to blame. Dad and Mom should never have allowed him to commit to anyone at the tender age of 16. He is there responsibility. Their counsel ought to hold sway. Yet, if I’m his Dad in this situation, I’d stick right by his side and tell him to take the jabs and keep on ticking.
I’m glad he prayed about it. Lets hope it was sincere and not one of those prayers like we sometimes utter after having already made our bad decision and then asking God to bless it — kind of like some folks do when they find their “soul mate”, the woman they were “meant to be with.”
“This woman is perfect for me. She is a Christian. She thinks I’m great. Unlike my wife, she doesn’t mind my annoying habits. I’m her hero. Everyone is right to criticize me. I let a lot of people down, especially Coach Croom, whom I greatly admire. But, after having taken a closer look at my options, as difficult as it is for me, I think LSU is the better fit.”

A couple of things, guys… First off, I completely understand being disheartened at losing a kid I truly think is a top-notch talent – particularly if it might mean losing someone else like Bumphis along the way. I have tremendous respect for Croom and what he’s doing at MSU, but we ARE talking about a 16 year old kid here.
A few factors to consider regarding his decision that you might not know of:
When RP leaves, we will indeed have several talented QB’s on the roster, but NONE with any real game experience, so the starting spot will be wide open. The fact that he’s enrolling in Januray only gives him a greater advantage in that competition.
He will be throwing to elite caliber recievers, be they wide-outs, running backs or tight-ends. That’s a good thing.
LSU’s new OC Crowton is widely regarded as one of the best if nto THE best OC in the nation. Last season in his first year, our offense was crippled with injuries and he still managed to set records for yardage, points, yards per game, points per game, first downs and total number of plays, with pretty much every other category falling in the top 5. Every QB he has ever coached has played in the NFL – and this is from schools like La Tech and Baylor.
And lastly, I know this is one you guys might not like, but its the truth. Croom broke his word first. The Garrets were told when Chris committed that Croom was done at QB – then they find out that AFTERWARDS, he offered a scholarship to Tyler Russell from Meridian… now, I don’t blame Croom for doing what he felt he had to do, but let’s be fair when we’re casting blame and in some cases venom – do we go after the worldly coach or the 16 year old kid for not living up to their part in the ‘bargain’?

He was recruited as an ‘athlete’. He wants to be given a shot at QB and Miles and Crowton will absolutely be given that shot, but if it doesn’t take, he absolutely understands that they will still be able to use his skills at WR. This year LSU has the luxury of recruiting a number of players (Brockers and Russel from Texas, Calhoun from Georgia, etc. who can play a number of positions, and since they is no immediate need anywhere, give them the chance to make their mark at their preferred spot.
Any QB who might have some trepidation at competing against Russel should be equally excited at the prospect of throwing TO him. On th eother hand, Garret is being recruited SOLELY at QB and will be an early enrollee – so long as he’s not afraid of competition (and I don’t want a QB who would be), the table’s set for him.

Gregg, I would ask Chris a tough question (by recruiting question standards, which are usually softballs). “According to Scout.com (or use any other recruiting service), since 2007, LSU has signed or has committed three QB’s ranked higher than you coming out of high school. How do you think this will affect your playing time at LSU?”

But look at the big picture, we have a quarterback in Carroll, who in my humble opinion will become a good quarterback and then Tyson Lee, who gives us a running threat at QB. O’Neal Wilder has a nagging hamstring injury. Nothing major, but they are being cautious because he also runs track. He was doing very well, was actually second string, before that. Talked to him in the Chick-Fil-A line the other day. Nice guy. When I told him I expected 30 touchdowns next fall, he smiled and said he would sure give it a try.

Not only do we lose a 5* commitment, every coach in the SEC we recruit against can point to the fact that a life long fan (your son) was more than willing to break his word to our program. Welcome to Death Valley Chris – get ready for the most exciting Saturady nights of your life.
It’s amazing how many MSU folks are worried about your playing time. You’re smart enough to know that in the SEC a team can never have too many QBs or RB’s. I can’t recall in recent memory an LSU QB starting every game of the year. Jamarcus (best QB in the country a year ago) and Matt Flynn split time. Flynn (winning QB of the BCS champs) and Perrilloux split time last year. Perrilloux and Jared Lee will be spliting time next year. You will undoubtedly be splitting time with someone after your redshirt season.
It also amazes me how blogers on this board trashed Eli Manning. Eli went to Ole Miss not because it was Ole Miss but because David Cutcliff was the coach. Cutcliff was Tennesse’s QB coach when Payton was there. Eli felt, with the support of his dad and brother, that Cutcliff’s offense would give him the best preperation for the pros – and hey made the right decision. It was coincidental that Ole Miss was Archie’s alma mater. To say that Eli was drafted because his last name was Manning is pure ignorance.
Hey guys 16 and 17 year olds change their mind more often than they change socks. I am sure Chris was overwhelmed by Coach Croom’s scholarship offer and possibly felt he couldn’t refuse considering his family’s close relationship with MSU. Perhaps after he saw who MSU’s Off. Coordinator was and the offense they run he decided MSU wasn’t the right place for him to be.
Give the kid some slack, prospects decommit every year and it happens to all programs. If you’re going to compete in the big time you’d better get used to it.

We usually arrive on campus on game day at about 7 am for a 7pm game. We grill ribs, sausage, burgers & chicken and kill at least a keg.
We hate televised game because the networks usually want a 1 pm kickoff and that cuts our tailgating time in half.

My nephew was a freshman at Ole Miss this past year. He really likes the home games but he says it doesn’t compare to 120,000 tailgaters on campus all day for a game that only going to seat about 92,000.

I live just west of New Orleans. Born and raised in New Orleans. I’ve been tailgateing at LSU for over 35 yrs. I started with my dad and uncles, later with my cousins and two sons who graduated from LSU.
The only LSU SEC road games I’ve been to were at Auburn (great college football atmosphere) and Ole Miss when they used to play the Ole Miss – LSU games in Jackson.
My tickets are in a section where they sell visitor’s tickets. I’ve always enjoyed meeting and talking to other SEC team’s fans at games. Everybody has a good time.

Every stadium has it’s share of A**holes. Some more than others, my cousin and his wife had to leave Bryant Stadium in Tuscloosa under police escort after his wife was punched out by a local good ‘ole boy after LSU scored a touchdown.
My cousin was a DT at LSU in the early 70s and he sent some bodies flying before the police told him it would be better if he just left the game.
At LSU, at least the student section isn’t in the upper decks
