Hansbrough explains decision to transfer

I admit to being surprised about Ben Hansbrough transferring, especially after talking with him last week and hearing him explain all the things he’s doing to get ready for next season.

But I was even more surprised when he explained his reason to transfer.

Basically, he told me he wants to be a better basketball player, but the facilities at MSU don’t give him that opportunity.

A self-described gym rat, he can’t get into the Hump to work on his game and isn’t sure when he’ll be able to.

“I’m not going to beat anyone on talent alone,” he said. “I have to outwork people. And to do that, I need to be in the gym. Right now, I can’t get into the Hump, and I won’t be able to for another couple of months. I know it sounds petty, but without a practice facility, I can’t get better as a player.”

He sounded frustrated, but said there are no ill-feelings toward the school, players or coaching staff. And he added the move had nothing to do with his role on the team or playing minutes. As for where he’ll end up, he’s not sure. But he’ll use the next couple of weeks to look around, and he said he hopes to make a decision by May.

Your thoughts? I’m not exactly sure what to think.

We need a practice facility. But, it’s a BS reason. He knew that when he committed. And we have better facilities than the other schools that offered him. He should be more appreciative of the chance we’ve given him and honor his commitment. And, the *&^%$# hit on my girlfriend at the grill once. She said he was creepy.

  2. cnd46 Says:

I agree, I think that Greg should make that a high thing on the do list.

  3. judwe Says:

I’m not sure he pulls the trigger and actually goes. I think there will be other schools interested but Stansbury should NOT let him go to ANY of our opponents.

I think Rick, certainly needs to use this as leverage with the administration to finally get the facility DONE. This has been talked about FAR too long. Now it has likely cost us two very good players (counting Hopson).

Looking at the big picture we need $$$.

-The staff’s salaries are WAY below standard (Horn just got 700k for promises at USC)

    -desperately need practice facilities.

-crystal bowls of maroon m&m’s constantly and consistantly replentished at eachplayer that seems in the least bit uncomfortable or “edgy”.

    -tuck in service/mints on pillows

Our players deserve better… I mean, what do we expect them to do, have to sneak out of the state to play tournament games?

  4. thespear Says:

Thats the lamest excuse I have ever heard. Yeah our facilities are not top notch, but I dont think he is going to find anywhere that offers more than state does that will play him 75% of the game. There is more to it than this, im thoroughly convinced there is. Have fun playing at a lower tier school, or sitting on the bench if your name will get you into another power conference, Ben. Ben is an excellent player, but Stans gave him the opportunites to blossom, which he wont get many other places.

  5. getrealkid Says:

one word for this — ISSUES. kid has issues. good luck to the little sportster, maybe he can learn how to play defense somewhere instead of working on his shot

  6. thespear Says:

btw, you guys are right about the facilities. New ones are desperately needed. I had the chance to tour the athletic facilities at that university in Knoxville, I was blown away. Heck, they’ve got buildings devoted to helping the athletes study. If we don’t stay competitive when it comes to amenities, its going to become harder and harder to compete for an SEC title

  7. 2thdoc Says:

I am positive that Psycho Dad helped come up with that excuse…priceless. We also don’t have another basketball goal in the city of Starkville.

Everyone knows we need a practice facility but I did not know the time table evolved around Little Ben.

Gregg, I’m sure you can’t practice your typing speed on your laptop either unless you are in the first class seat of an airplane.

  8. farley662 Says:

Tell him he’s a dick and can kiss my ass!

  9. bcdog Says:

You have got to be kidding…so Ben has no access to any goal in all of starkville…this is not the real reason he is transferring. By the way he should ask the Delk boys how it is working out for them???

  10. thingreenline Says:

What’s gonna happen next? Croom gonna leave for Vanderbilt, or is our next university president gonna be from a junior college?

  11. thingreenline Says:

I’m fk’n speechless. This is beyond ridiculous. Tell the prick to schedule some alone-time at Sanderson!!

  12. bcdog Says:

He’s good…he’s not great…we gave him the best offer and I doubt seriously he will get another shot in a power league. Stansbury better not o.k it. I can’t believe he is seriously leaving such a sweet deal (SEC, lots of minutes, adoring fans) for SW Missouri State???

  13. thespear Says:

congrats Kansas and imabulldog on your win tonight

  14. farley662 Says:

The Tigers were spitters, not swallowers.

  15. buzzardroostus Says:

I’m gonna really give my honest opinion. Rick Stansbury is a great recruiter, but a horrible coach. I would hate playing for him. He cheated Richard Williams out of his job. Yes, Stansbury is the one who ratted on coach Williams, knowing he would fall into a great chance at getting the head coaching position. I’ve never had anything for Stansbury since.

It makes absolutely no sense how he’s able to talk such good recruits into coming to play for him. Because once he get’s them here, he has no stinking idea what to do. There’s no team concept. There’s no discipline. There’s no responsibility. It’s embarrassing to have the talent we did this year and struggle to make it the the tournament.

Having said all that, I’m not one bit surprised Hansbrough is leaving. Don’t be surprised if more leave. The one thing that keeps players here is the fact that Stansbury has no rules and the players can do whatever they want except practice in the HUMP to work on basketball skills.

  16. thingreenline Says:

I hope someone whoops Ben’s ass in Sociology class tomorrow. And a Tri Delt gives him VD on purpose.

  17. buzzardroostus Says:

    Hey thingreenline:
If MSU hires a president from a junior college, they will at least hire someone with academic administrative experience. That’s more experience than the past two presidents put together.

  18. thingreenline Says:

I agree with you buzzard – except for the R. Williams thing.
I don’t think Stans pulled a Richard Nixon or Puffy Combs to get his job.

  19. thingreenline Says:

Yeah, you actually have a point!

  20. buzzardroostus Says:

It was a pretty well known fact on campus that Stansbury leaked the story about Williams and the young girl friend (of whom Williams had permission from her parents to be involved with) to the media. Most of the interviews were done by Stansbury during that time. He didn’t make much of an attempt to tell the truth about the situation with his buddy. What a great team they were. Williams was a basketball genius and Stansbury the best recruiter in the SEC.

  21. roastbeef1 Says:

Does Ben Hansbrough think he is some stud or something? Look at his old profiles. Who were his final four on his list? State, Southern Illinois, Dayton, and Florida State. Sure, Dayton was solid this year and SIU is usually solid, but Mississippi State is the only legit BCS school to offer him. Now he is going to thank Stansbury by ditching him after Stans helped develop him into a halfway respectable guard? That’s pathetic. Stans sucks as a coach, but you don’t do that to someone who was one of the only ones to actually give you an offer. Hell, UNC-Wilmington “showed interest” but didn’t even give him an offer I don’t think. This just shows why State will never be an elite program. We have Gordon wanting to fulfill his dreams of being a 2nd round pick, Hopson choosing UT over us after committing, and now Ben Hansbrough thinking he’s an All-American and is too good for Starkville, Mississippi. Do us all a favor and go hold your brother’s jock. That’s your main claim to fame anyway.

  22. farley662 Says:

Kinda like Garrett? Why is ok for your son and not Benny?

  23. roastbeef1 Says:

Dude, Garrett isn’t even my son. I’ll tell you right now, I’m a twenty year old sophomore at Itawamba Community College. And this is two totally different scenarios. Ben signed on the dotted line, played two years at state, and is now deciding to leave. He took visits here so my question is, why were the facilities good enough for him then but not now?

Garrett broke his committment almost an entire year before signing day, giving Croom plenty of time to regroup and go after other qb’s. It’s not like other scenarios where people decide to sign elsewhere right before signing day after committing to another school.

  24. www.tupelopix.com Says:

Things just aren’t looking very sunny down starkville way these days. So who steps in for Ben’s spot?

And why in the hell can’t we practice in the hump right now? Is that another one of those whack a%% NCAA rules?

  25. thingreenline Says:

How bad would it suck if he went to Tennessee…..then he and Scotty could become luvas.

  26. thingreenline Says:

If Jarvis decides to leave, I’m gonna go apeshi*!

  27. carwwest Says:

this sucks that he wants to leave but i just want to know what stans is doing to them to make them want to leave……ben wont go to tenn because i honestly think he isnt good enough…..it will be interesting because stewart in my opinion is still the most questionable player we have…he is NOT a shooting guard!….i think ravern should play a lot more next year….i wonder what our starting line up is going to look like next year…..

  28. db33 Says:

My guess is that it’ll be Jamont, Barry, Ravern, Romero, & Jarvis emerging as your primary starting five.

Ervin, Houston, Sharpe, Rimmer, Delk twins, Goodridge, now Ben, year after year after year.

  29. bigdraws Says:

At least it looks like Byrnes wants a national search for Polk’s replacement.

  30. dadwithpride Says:

Doesnt’ he lose a year with a transfer, even with a coaches release? So whoever takes him only gets him for a year? Now theres a winner.
And even though its been a hundred yearssince I was at State, there were plenty of Intrmural gyms, etc to practice at. I think the Sanderson Center even has some hoops, course that would mean having to mingle with the “commoners”,

  31. bigdraws Says:

    McCarthy Gymnasium???

  32. 2thdoc Says:

Maybe he thinks the extra year will allow him to grow another foot in height.

  33. bigdraws Says:

He’s scared I might have to come down there and dunk on him.

  34. 2thdoc Says:

To make this week even worse is the rumor that Gordon hasn’t exactly been attending classes since the end of the season according to one of his classmates. He may be throwing in the towel too and doesn’t like the whole class part of college.

I don’t like brushing my teeth either so I think I am going to bypass that today. I’ll just let the coffee cover up my morning breath…too much hassle.

  35. jaybirdms Says:

I say let him go. He had a knack for making stupid mistakes at the wrong times.

I can kind of see his point about practice facilities. Sure there are plenty of basketball goals in Starkville, but I’m sure he would have to deal with too many folks just trying to show him up in a pick-up game.

  36. bigdraws Says:

I don’t like wiping my butt either, so…..

  37. 2thdoc Says:

Yea Draws, that would be pretty crappy….if Gordon goes pro.

  38. Gregg Ellis Says:

The Hump is being used for other things this time of the year – job fairs, science fairs, graduation, concerts.

  39. theconquistador2 Says:

I guess we had a practice facility when he committed 2 years ago???

  40. sbullie Says:

Although I hate to Ben leave, I think it’s best when a player does not like his surrounding to do just that. State does not need players such as Ben who really does not know what he wants? I just hope he is happy with his decision. On another note seeing Scotty Hopson choose UT over Msu was not a good thing at first but after thinking about it, I am glad he chose the latter. Once again we need players here who want to be here not ones who can’t make a decision. There were some players on the bench who deserved more playing time than granted this year. In the end remember State will come out the winner in this wishy washy world. Men make decisions/boys usually don’t know which way to go until it is too late. Good luck to Ben and Scotty!!! Mississippi State will prevail one way or another.

  42. carrolldawg75 Says:

I don’t for one buy his excuse for not being man of his word. I think he sees all the hype Tyler has gotten at UNC and he thinks he deserves the same and we are not giving it to him. The only problem Ben hasn’t noticed is, he is no where the athlete that Tyler is. He may go to a major program, but I don’t think he will see near the playing time he got here at State. IMO, he is a solid player, but not great as he is in his own mind, or daddy’s. Ben wake up and realize you are not a 5 star recruit, you brother was, but not you, so quit trying to live off his name.

  43. imabulldog Says:

Ben was going nuts cheering at the UNC game, jumping up and down- chest bumping his dad.
Maybe he’ll go to UNC… He’s already got the t shirt

Stansbury’s lacking of control + Dee Bost coming in = Hansbrough transfer

  45. tjohnson008 Says:

A bigger question to ponder would be why on earth would any athlete in any sport willingly (if other options were available) go to school at State. The facilities are the worst in the SEC and Starkville is absolutely a dreadful college town. Good luck Ben – we could use you at Bama!

  46. bigdraws Says:

I’ve seen your basketball and baseball stadium. Believe me, ours is not the worst.

  47. bigdraws Says:

Or maybe it’s just so you won’t have to lose to Auburn in football for 7 years straight.

  48. bigdraws Says:

Or lose to State for 2 years straight in fb, and get swept in bb 3 games.

  49. rebelnate Says:

tjohnson Bama has some of the worst facilities in college period. The baseball stadium is garbage.

Face Bear Bryant has been dead a long time.Bama has not played for a National Championship in 15 years and probably never will again.

I hate Alabama with a passion and all the fans who root for Bama as well.

  52. tjohnson008 Says:

Relax…My comments would come from any fan or grad from an SEC school. Clearly some of you have not been to T-Town – our bb stadium is excellent; The basketball arena has been renovated (still not great but better than State’s); As for football, the best facilities in the nation with the #1 recruiting class arriving next year.

If the State of Ms could keep their prospects in state it is likely several programs would have decent teams. But at an early age they usually want to get to hell out of Dodge (Ms) and often they land right in T-Town

  53. bigdraws Says:

I went to your basketball facility when State beat that tail earlier this year. It’s great if you like sitting a mile away from the floor. And not facing the court. Baseball stadium sucks, enough said. I’ll give you fb. But correct me if I’m wrong. Didn’t our best player on defense and our coach come Tuscaloosa? And BTW Ttown is not any better than any other town from Atlanta to Vicksburg. And oh yeah, you can have Jimmy “got my ass laid out” Johns.

  54. rebelnate Says:

I was just at your baseball stadium 2 weeks ago and it is garbage.

A number 1 recruiting class don’t mean nothing till you get them out on the field.

You are a typical Alabama fan that is for sure. Atleast we can admit to being mediocre.

  55. Braves Dawg Says:
