One expert says . . .

This afternoon, I talked with basketball guru Gary Parrish of about Jamont Gordon turning pro for a story I’ll have in Wednesday’s paper.

I really thought he offered some great insight on the situation.

He is an excerpt of what he had to say:
“See, Jamont was never going to be a Top 10 prospect, for a variety of reasons. So though he might enhance his status by returning to college and entering what should be a weaker draft next year, he’ll still make more money than most college graduates in his first year out of school, and it’s difficult to fault a guy for going that direction if he feels it’s time to go.”

Your thoughts?

If he leaves early, he takes away an extra year of basketball memories from when he was actually integral to a team’s success. It won’t be that way in the NBA – and he won’t even cut it there.

Gregg, you need to post nude pics of the State cheerleaders or somethin. This site is startin to die!

Slow time of the year. Believe it or not, the hits are way up. Just fewer comments.

I’ll be shocked if he goes in the first round. Then what? No guaranteed contract in round two.

  5. Gregg Ellis Says:

I looked at 50 mock drafts today and he wasn’t a first rounder in any of them. Most around the 40th overall pick.

I’m not going to bash JG for leaving. I hope he does well and makes a good career out of his skills. I do worry though that he’ll fall by the wasteside. Best wishes JG.

    What about Sir Charles?

  8. bigdraws Says:

Another great pitching performance, huh GG.

  9. Gregg Ellis Says:

I’m with you on that draws. He’ll be in Europe in a couple of years, if not next.

  10. Gregg Ellis Says:

As for the baseball game, I’m clueless as to what is happening. I guess I should go check it out.

  11. Gregg Ellis Says:

Yikes. Just saw the score. 10-2 USM. Unreal. Am I to assume Polk is still in the game?

  15. Gregg Ellis Says:

Rally caps are on, I guess.

  16. bigdraws Says:

    Yeah, I guess.

  17. bigdraws Says:

10-7 USM. Bases jammed 2 strikes. 2 outs.

  18. bigdraws Says:

State will be down by at least three in the top of the ninth.

Jamont is looking at @ 400-500k a year in Europe for the next ten – twelve years. Then TAXES… then the rest of his life. Too many of these guys know exactly what to do with a ball but NO CLUE about $$$.

Jamont! If you are reading, buy used cars and live frugally… be an entourage of ONE (until the wife comes along)be a ONE WOMAN MAN (not talking morality/ talking fiscal SANITY) invest diversely and you will be able to COMFORTABLY retire soon after ball.

If I could get my hand on 1/10th of what some of these athletes make…. I’d never have to WORK again. EVER.

Here’s a good read about a guy who has no clue about how money works…please note that the following is dudes’ MONTHLY !!! budget!'s-spending-only-thing-bigger-than-he-is

  20. Gregg Ellis Says:

    It’s a final. USM wins 11-7.

  21. judwe Says:

I’m no “expert” but I will give Jamont some advice.

Jamont, you are about to get a 10-12 year European vacation… the rest of us dream of a 10-12 trip across the pond to re-establish why we love America. You are going to make somewhere around 200-300k a year after your agent and Uncky Sam are taken care of.

    Buy a USED car.

    Live frugally.

Be a one man entourage… you don’t need to pay people to spend your money!
    ('s-spending-only-thing-bigger-than-he-is )

Be a ONE woman man. (not talking morals talking BRAINS !!!)

    Use UNcommon sense.

Thanks for 3 great years, sure you’ll play a long time for a team we can’t pronounce… but you’ll ALWAYS be a BULLDOG !!!

  22. bigdraws Says:

    That’s basball.

  23. judwe Says:

Actually… That’s what Mississippi State Baseball has become.

And Polk is pushing Raffo with the idea of “continuity”.

  24. bigdraws Says:

And to make things better. My Chiefs just traded their best player to the Vikings. Jared Allen goes to Minnesota becoming the highest paid DE in NFL history.

  25. dadwithpride Says:

I look at Jamont leaving from a employers eyes. I never begrudged a kid leaving if he thinks he is bettering himself and/or his family. I may know they’re wrong, but its his choice, not mine, to make that decision, and I wished them well, and harbored no ill feelings.

  26. Gregg Ellis Says:

I like your approach there, dadwithpride.
