Byrne recommends pay hike for Croom

Athletics director to-be Greg Byrne confirmed Wednesday afternoon that he has recommended to the college board a pay increase for Sylvester Croom that would take his state pay from $215,000 to $250,000.

The board will vote on the proposal on Thursday, and it’s a deal that will run through the 2011 season.

His hefty supplement, which is provided by the Bulldog Foundation and will push his salary near the $1.2 million mark, hasn’t been finalized, and Byrne didn’t want to comment further until the entire packaged was signed. However, he expects that deal to be completed in “the near future.”

I love Croom, but I think it’s premature to give him another increase. He’s had 1 winning season. Can’t we wait to see if this will continue.

i agree with draws, but i figure byrne is trying to build his relationship with croom…… croom really confided in LT…

That’s the trend, but you can bet if MSU has a losing season in 2008, his pay won’t be docked.

I’ll give Byrne some slack on this one to make decisions that may pay some dividends in the long run. Just win more games and it will work out. Maybe Byrne was out of town during the spring scrimmage game and missed all of the “highlights” by our offense.

    Congrats GG!

    Sweet! Is there a trophy?

    A Virtual Trophy.

That’s just as good, Braves. I will go nicely on my ego wall.

Sure, don’t give the guy who was just named Coach of the Year in the SEC a raise. Forget the fact that he’s the lowest paid coach in the SEC West. However, we need to remember if he takes us to another 7+ win season, others will come knocking and he’ll probably remember that we didn’t reward him. Trust me, you can’t get a decent replacement for Croom for less than 1.2Million so this is a bargain. Our AD is making a bet that 2007 was not a fluke.

    That’s one expensive bet.

You can only be questioning this move if you don’t believe in the job that Croom has done. It goes far beyond one season’s record. His team had an overall 2.7 gpa for the spring. A bunch of athletes who are excelling in the classroom. He is recruiting better and better classes each year. He has restored pride back into our football program. I doubt many teams look at their schedule this year and chalk us up to an automatic W as they have in the past.

MSU only upped his salary by $30K, the rest of the money comes from the Bulldog Foundation. If you consider $30K an expensive bet for a guy like Coach Croom, so be it. I think it’s an inexpensive investment into one of the greatest assests that MSU currently possesses.
