Sylvester Croom is all about respect, and he wants those outside the MSU family to respect his program. And after what happened last year in the win/loss column, he said he’s seeing more and more respect.

“Well, you know the program has gotten a little respect now in the conference,” he said. That’s been one of the hardest things, I know for me personally, to deal with over the past few years. It’s the negative perceptions, that we weren’t really a SEC-quality football program. I know it’s been tough on our coaches and our players both. Regardless of whether or not you’re a champion, this game always comes down to respect. Respect from your peers, from the guys you compete against. Even if you’re not the champ you want to be respected. That hasn’t been the case, where this year it is. So that’s the first thing.”

When you knock people on their butt game in and game out, they will eventually respect you.

Croom will gain even more respect when he proves that 2007 wasn’t a fluke season. That’s not a knock on him or anyone/anything else. I’m just talking reality. When your program is following up (count’em) 6 consecutive losing seasons and they break out with 8 wins, that’s great, but it proves nothing in the grand scheme of things. Teams have fluke seasons in the sports world all the time and then go right back to their losing ways the following year. Let’s all hope that doesn’t happen to MSU(for once), and that Croom truly earns the respect he desires. I just hope for his sake that he doesn’t fall on his face this year, because an already controversial $1.7 mil contract will only make things that much tougher on him from the fans.
