Croom speaks

by

I thought I’d share some interesting quotes Sylvester Croom had to say today.

Let’s call it Coach Speak . . .
(On Chris Relf)
“He’s the most athletic of all of them, but he’s very inconsistent right now. He’s got to get a little more intent and a little more serious about the business at hand. Chris has great, great potential and I told him he’s either going to perform at the level of that ability, or he’s not going to be around here. We will not allow him to play at less than he’s capable of.”

(On Jamayel Smith and the rest of the receivers)
“He is our best receiver, there’s no question about that. I think Jamayel is an excellent route-runner. He’s been real professional since the season was over with about getting his body in great shape and becoming an even better route-runner. I thought he got a little careless the other day with his hands. He had such an emphasis on running after the catch he was focusing more on running and forgot about the catch.”

“Co-Eric Riley has been very consistent since the bowl game, in his work habits and everything, and I’ve been very pleased with that. Aubrey Bell is in the best shape of his life and is practicing in a more professional manner, I’m very pleased with him. I saw him out there yesterday. He’s become a technician running routes, he’s catching the ball well, and he’s really trying to help Delmon Robinson and Arceto Clark and all the young receivers as they develop.”

(On Keith Fitzhugh)
“Keith, as I think back, was the first guy who committed to us when we got here. He started out as a corner, and it was a drastic change for him to move to safety. But he has embraced it, and he is playing very well for us now. I thought he had an excellent practice the last two practices and has given us outstanding leadership. He finished up with that great game in the bowl game and it has carried through into spring and into the fall practices.”

(On special teams)
“We haven’t got real deep into the kicking game except for our field goals and extra points, and field goal and extra point block and rush. Those have been the main emphases so far. Our punt team and those things have been emphasizing individual techniques, and we’re just now getting into the teamwork phases of it. And we’ll get a lot of work in that scrimmage Saturday.”

(On Anthony Dixon)
“We’re always on the same page. We just might not have been reading the same words at the same time.”

I must say, when Croom and Dixon talk about the other, it’s always entertaining fodder. Very entertaining.

It’s hilarious, because they really do have a great relationship, but they do have their run-ins, usually because AD tried to do it his way and it didn’t quite go as planned.
I expect Boobie to have a HUGE year, BTW. He seems to be taking his game to another level by working his tail off every single day.

What’s the deal with Relf? Is he just lazy?

  3. Gregg Ellis Says:

An average quarterback coming out of a very small high school than ran a basic offense.

Sounds like a guy we shouldn’t have recruited. A long shot that hasn’t paid off. Oh well, if we can make it through this year without a major qb injury to Carroll and Lee, we should be ok. We should be in good shape in 2009 and beyond.

  5. imabulldog Says:

if he is as talented as we hear, it might be time to change positions

i think AD and croom have their run ins because they have such a good relationship…honestly it reminds me of playing ball for my dad….croom just wants him to reach his potential…glad to hear him hype up our receivers but im going to have to wait and see with that because well…you know….keep up the good work!!
    GO DAWGS!!

  7. bigdraws Says:

If he keeps listening to the old man. The sky’s the limit for him.

    Gregg,

Any chance Croom/McCorvey might use Relf like Meyer used Tebow his freshman year? Remember he had the senior Chris Leak but he was small, not really able to take a hit. So he brought in Tebow and he ran it about 90% of the time. Just a good change of pace to keep defenses off balance. Relf is much bigger than Lee & Carroll. And, I’ve seen a quote by Croom saying that Relf runs like “another Anthony Dixon”. Pretty strong words.

Any chance at all they will show some CREATIVITY like that?

  9. bigdraws Says:

Would be a helluva note to run the option with him and dixon.

  10. carwwest Says:

come on guys…the only way that is going to happen is if someone high up in the organization draws it up on a napkin and walks mccorvey through it a couple times….anything not off tackle or up the middle is going to have to be explained to woody….

  11. db33 Says:

Relf is listed on the new roster at 6-3, 232. That’s a LOAD. I’d love to see him run some zone read, some shotgun draws, ala’ Tebow. Can we get some innovation on offense PUHLEASE????

  12. farley662 Says:

    No.

    Signed,

    Sly Croom

Today was a great day to be a Dawg. I’ve been out at the Pentagon all week listening to briefs. Today, we got a brief from Brig Gen Darrell Jones, who is a Mississippi State grad c/o ’79. He started out talking State football. I loved it. I got up and introduced myself as c/o ’99, asked a work related question, and then gave the General a parting shot by saying Beat Alabama, GTH Ole Miss. A crowd of about 135 ate it up. There were about 8 Bama grads in the auditorium too.

Antonio Hargro sentenced to 20 yrs in prison
    What a waste

  16. jwbreb Says:

God help us if we go to war with BG Jones and dc31 ringing their cow bells. They will join us “as they say GTH Ole Miss”.
