8 days, 8 position stories

Starting today with running backs and concluding next Sunday with the quarterbacks, I’ll have stories on all the positions that make up the football team.

On Monday, the focus will be linebackers, followed by the receivers on Tuesday. And on and on we’ll go. Also next Sunday, our football tab will be published. Talk about a lot of work and man hours. It’s definitely a team project that involves all facets of the newspaper.

Also today, I have a story on Saturday’s scrimmage.

“Pretty much the rest of the way, except we’ve still got some situational stuff to go in on Monday and Tuesday. But we’ve already got a preliminary game plan in place, and a lot of the stuff that we’re going to use against Louisiana Tech is already in. It’s just packaging it down to exactly what we’re going to do. The things we’ve done well, we’ll use them against LaTech; the things that we’re not good at right now, we won’t. It’s not like we’ve got to do a lot of stuff, because what we have in is pretty much what we’re going to run all year. We just have to get better at it, so that’s the quest right now.” – Sylvester Croom on when the focus on Louisiana Tech begins.

What’s your take on Elliot & Bonner? Who’s faster? Who’s shiftier? Who has the best hands out of the backfield?

I can’t wait to see these 2 kids. Reminds me of when Jerious & Nick Turner were freshmen. Elliot & Bonner are about their same size too.

  2. Gregg Ellis Says:

DB, Elliott appears to be faster, while Bonner may be more shiftier. I haven’t seen them catch enough to know who has the best hands.

But there’s no question both have a lot of talent.

Gregg, need some info on the kickers….distance, hang time etc. KO and punts as well. Is Richards the real deal that we thought he’d be? Thnks.

  4. Gregg Ellis Says:

fr8dawg, that’s a story I’m working on now, ironically. I can say while Richards has been slowed with injuries, he definitely has a strong leg. However, Adam Carlson has been pretty accurate throughout camp.

Croom has said Blake McAdams has struggled with consistency. With him, the focus isn’t distance as much as it is hang time. Then again, that’s the case for most punters.

Hopefully, that’s a good enough brief answer for the time being. My special teams story will run later in the week.

    Hey Gregg,

I know things are hectic but was wondering when the blog bag answers might be ready. I curuious to see your answers to some of the questions.

  6. Gregg Ellis Says:

tonight, rwriffe. I know I said Friday, but with two extra days I was able to get more info.

  7. rwriffe Says:

I can only imagine how hectic your days are this time of year. Thanks for the update.

  8. Gregg Ellis Says:

No so much that it’s hectic. It’s just that I’m on the road to Starkville all the time and the days are long. Once the season starts, though, it’s not as bad. Actually, with classes starting tomorrow, it will be easier with the routine.

The offense is so bad it’s now become a quest to improve upon it.

On this quest, you will face 8 challenges in 8 days. On the 8th day, if you’ve survived all the challenges, you will be granted the all powerful knowledge of the great “Endzone”.
