Woody McCorvey Says …

An excerpt, because I’ve got to save some of it for the print edition later in the week (and some I’ll probably repeat):

Q: Is the offense closer to clicking than people might think?
I think so. The thing that was disappointing the other day, at critical times in the ballgame, we had some mental breakdowns. … I know everybody’s disappointed, we’re disappointed, too. Because we put a lot of time into this thing out here on the practice field, and these guys put a lot of time in.”

On criticism of the offense:
“It all depends on how the game is going on what you’re trying to do. In that ballgame the other night, our defense was really playing well, and the thing we didn’t want to do is put ourself in a situation where the offense would really make something bad happen, and now you’re really out of it. …

“I’m not going to make excuses about it, we didn’t do a good job executing. I’ll be the first one to say that. That’s my job, that’s my responsibility …”

our defense was really playing well, and the thing we didn’t want to do is put ourself in a situation where the offense would really make something bad happen, and now you’re really out of it. …

Part of that is why Crooms has a 30% winning percentage. You can’t play not to lose, especially when your offense can’t move the ball.

    Byrne, please fire Crooms NOW!!!

  2. thingreenline Says:

He’s not going to fire Croom, topdog. He may piss him off by making him replace Woody, but he’s not gonna fire him.

  3. maroondog Says:

Croom must pop about 50 bottles of tums during a game because he is so afraid something bad is going to happen. I would hate to know how many ulcers the man has had. What is he afraid of? losing?

  4. bigdraws Says:

The Sherrill era continues!!! Tommy Kelly arrested.

  5. dadwithpride Says:

Amazing. Sherrill still responsible for somebody on the opposite coast and nearly40 years old. I’d still take Sherrill today over Doom and Gloom Croom. WOnder how many times Sherril got asked Sat. afternoon out in the Junction, if he would come back.
If this offensive spiral down continues, there is no way this should continue for the 6th year.

  6. bigdraws Says:

    Was a joke dumbass.

  7. bigdraws Says:

    And I don’t think 1980 was 40 years ago.

  8. dc31 Says:

In order to save what’s left of the season, put an offensive package in for Pegues and just let him make plays from the spread. That’s what I would do if I wanted to salvage something

  9. bantyrooster1 Says:

Please answer these two questions for me.
    1. What is the specifics of Croom’s contract when it comes to a buyout?
    2. Which McDonald’s did McCorvey work at before he came to state so I can try and get his job back for him.

  10. thingreenline Says:

I think it’s obvious from your article today, Brad, that our offensive playcallers don’t know what the crap they’re doing.

Not going to try to game plan for people anymore? Give me a break. Even if that’s just his way of blowing off steam, that’s still a stupid thing to say. What are ya gonna do now, wing it?

  11. bigdraws Says:

I also like the comments woody made. Something to the effect of…’We didn’t want to do anything to cost our team the ballgame’. Really? Like not moving the football and going for it on 4th and 15?

  12. desertdog2005 Says:

Just a quick note….how many of you on here remember that Jackie is the A$$ responsible for our probation and for 3 horribly losing seasons before he was told to retire. I do remember and I remember the football team completely quitting after halftime. Don’t tell me Croom not the right coach. I stated earlier Croom brought some pride to Miss. State and some dignity. As much as I don’t like Woody as an offensive coordinator he is still a great mentor and recruiter for MSU. Look at the talent that is wanting to come to State because of Croom and Woody. They may not get the #1 draft board by ESPN ( they suck tremendously) but we get good quality young men that play hard and sacrifice alot for our school. I remember a team that looked like it didnt want to win during the Sherrill era and now we have a team that biting at the bit to try and win. My opinion on Woody is move him to a Assistant Head Coach position where he will still be allowed to coach and mentor the team, but get a new Offensive Coordinator that has the ability to remember that his two fastest and most athletic offensive players were sitting on the bench–also needs to be able to scheme against the top 12 teams in the nation otherwise known as the SEC. Alwasy Mississippi State.

  13. desertdog2005 Says:

    I meant Always Mississippi State.

  14. www.tupelopix.com Says:

Well said desert. As much as I hate watching our offense, at least we give a team effort for 4 quarters. The team quitting after the first quarter at the end of the Sherill era was much worse than the offensive troubles we’re having now. I still say fire Wxxdy though, good mentor or not. Bottom line is he isn’t getting the job done and hes had ample time to implement his system. Maybe he’ll prove us wrong this weekend. Yeah, right!

  15. thingreenline Says:

I don’t think putting Wxxdy as a assistant of any kind is good for the team. If that’s your way of fixing a problem, by handling a guy with kid gloves b/c he’s the friend of a head coach, then the head coach needs to be looked at harder. It’s his damn job to do what needs to be done to put the team in winning situations. We don’t have LSU money, so moving Wxxdy around and then having to pay another guy to do the job that Wooxy was suppose to do is wasteful.

  16. desertdog2005 Says:

Good point tupelo and TGL. We don’t have the money to keep him with another coach around and he has had ample time. We have the talent now–so that can’t be used as an excuse. We will have to wait and see the remainder of the season…at the end of the season and we still are in the bottom of the barrel either Offensively or team wise- it will be time for a change at OC definitely. I was reminded from a friend here that Woody was the Head coach or OC at Alabama A&M and was fired here. I am in Huntsville, Al don’t remember seeing that on his bio.

  17. lollipopkid Says:

I like that we don’t have any criminals, or at least, we don’t turn a blind eye to them like the Sherrill regime did. Croom deserves credit for that. But they’ve had four plus years to get the offense going and it’s getting worse. McCorvey sucks and he should be fired. I’d tell him that to his face if I got the chance. Every single fact supports that position. No one can make any kind of argument for keeping someone who’s consistently the worst at his job. If he’s not fired then Croom must go because there’s not one single reason to keep McCorvey other than he’s a friend. It’s that simple.

  18. 2thdoc Says:

Wxxdy must go and Crxxm can’t be stubborn in letting go of his WCXffense. You could start from scratch and in one week get better results than Saturday…why hang on to what can’t be fixed?

I will be watching Saturday just to see how much Elliot gets involved. Hopefully Wxxdy will not try to run him up the middle which is stupid for his style of running. Just get him the ball outside on some screen passes and let him do his thing.

  19. msu21 Says:

Can we just go back to the days of when we used to pay our recruits the big bucks and send them high-priced vehicles?? We were alot better then!

  20. bleedmaroon Says:

we can’t do that. we’re not alabama

  21. msu21 Says:

We’ve got the same big boosters as they do, but our’s are just tight with their money!! Everybody in our bulldog club is tight with their money it seems like…thats why we are so behind in the type of facilities we have

  22. thingreenline Says:

Not having 12 (?) national championships will do that

  23. thingreenline Says:

Just emailed Greg Byrne about our poor offensive performances under Wxxdy Mc’s leadership and Croom’s WCX.

I would suggest anyone else who has similar gripes do the same.

  24. bigdraws Says:

A lot of the same people who bitch about us not having bigger facilites, don’t give at all. I was amazed at the people who complaned when they reseated the hump a few years ago. Old guys who didn’t give crap to the university were sitting in the best seats in the house. The new AD is finding ways to generate money even if he has to step on some toes. I’ve had basketball tickets for several years, and I’m about to get squeezed out. But I understand. People are used to getting stuff for nothing around there and it’s about came to a stop. We were the last in the SEC to figure it out. That’s why we’re behind.

  25. dadwithpride Says:

Excuse big bigdraws, I should have said a 32 year old, and Sherrill still to blame for him getting a DUI. No need for name calling. I didnt see it as a joke. still beating down Jackie.

  26. bigdraws Says:

Sorry you can’t take a joke. I’m sure Dr. Laura has a blog somewhere. And he’s 28….just sayin.

  27. msu21 Says:

Kansas doesn’t have 12 nat’l titles nor West Virginia, South Florida, Oklahoma State….and look at their facilities. The payout during a majority of those nat’l titles were not what they are now. So what does that have to do with anything TGL?

  28. msu21 Says:

I give with the best of them bigdraws( terrible name btw) and even though I’m only 25 I wish I could give more! I will in the future.

  29. thingreenline Says:

It’s called a joke, msu21. It was a jab at Bama claiming 12 titles.

Some people on here need to take an enima and loosen up!

  30. msu21 Says:

Word! I love the jokes! Keep em coming!

  31. bigdraws Says:

Sorry I couldn’t be creative enough for you, uh…….msu21…

  32. thingreenline Says:

Anyway, Oklahoma State has those facilities b/c they had the one alumnus hit pay dirt and give the funding for it. One guy! That’s why they have it.

You also have to look at the fact that Mississippi has way too many colleges/junior colleges for it’s economic budget. Someone like Kansas, however, I’m sure sure how many fellow colleges they compete over funds with. Just something to think about.

But, it is true they we have a lot of cheapskate alumni.

And I seriously doubt you “give with the best of them”, msu21.

  33. msu21 Says:

I’m just remembering the greatest RB we ever had….Keifer McGee. Ring a bell?

  34. thingreenline Says:

    Michael Davis was my favorite.

  35. msu21 Says:

I was just meaning that I bet I give around what the average State fan gives….that’s all! I’m not in club level or anything TGL!! But in all seriousness..do you all think if we had a Statewide lottery then we would some kind of improvement?

  36. theconquistador2 Says:

    Donte Walker is my favorite!!!!

  37. bigdraws Says:

I have to agree about folks being cheapskates. I know what I give per year. It’s a decent amount but not anywhere near what oughta be getting me in the hump and 30 yard line seats about 20 rows up. Yet it does.

  38. theconquistador2 Says:

As the owner of a MSU car tag, I call for the firing of McCorvey!

  39. bigdraws Says:

And I’m with ya on Michael Davis. That guy was fun to watch. He’d punish those linebackers.

  40. bigdraws Says:

Also the owner of a car tag and I second the motion!!!

  41. thingreenline Says:

As the owner of a car tag, Dugout Club member, yearly Bulldog Club donor, and women’s volleyball admirer (best pics the athletics website provides), I vote Yay

  42. thingreenline Says:

And no, a lottery probably wouldn’t help MSU athletics. I would more than likely go towards a hight-tech poultry farm…

  43. imabulldog Says:

    All i want for Christmas?

    A new Off. Cord.

  44. imabulldog Says:

BTW, Dicenzo was the best 🙂

  45. bleedmaroon Says:

don’t forget about jereoius norwood. that guy has/had a lot of heart

  46. bantyrooster1 Says:

I love how people defend Croom and McLuvin with comments about MSU doesn’t have crooks and criminals anymore. That’s not the problem. The problem is we can’t move the football and haven’t been able to since Croom got here. All I’m asking for is a coach and an offensive coordinator who can convert 1 third down a game. There were more talented coaches out there when we hired the Walrus and there ARE still MORE talented COACHES out there. My year old son has already learned to say “Buy OUT”. A 30% winning percentage over 5 years DOESN’T CUT IT IN THE SEC. It’s time for State alumni and fans to admit that a big mistake was made when we hired Walrus not to mention the bigger mistake of extending his contract. If we don’t buy out the remainder of it, we can go ahead and pencil in 3 to 4 wins a year during the remainder of the contract. IS THIS REALLY WHAT IT’S ABOUT??? I thought we wanted a winning football program. At least a .500 team. GOOD COACHES ARE OUT THERE. LET’S GO GET US ONE. Ole Miss got a good one this time. They learned from their stupidity and didn’t make the same mistake twice. Let’s learn from ours and get a GOOD COACH. Croom is a good guy. I’m sure he and I could be good friends but he CAN’T coach at this level. And don’t feed me that NFL bullcrap. All he was in the NFL was a glorified gopher. Go fer this and Go fer that. We don’t need a Gopher, we need a football COACH.

  47. bleedmaroon Says:

at least wxxdy will admit that it is his fault. thats more than crxxm would do. i still dont like him though.

  48. thingreenline Says:

The first step in this is to replace the OC. That should have been done two years ago. If that doesn’t work, then talk about the HC. It’s the lack of action that has put this on the team during Year Five. The OC should be the first step. You rarely see a head coach get fired before his assistants are replaced.

  49. dc31 Says:

I agree, Croom just took us to the first bowl in a long time, when everybody had us pegged to win 5 games. He’s the right guy for the job, but I said from day one that Ellis Johnson was a great hire and Mc was a terrible hire. It might also help if Mac would come down out of that press box and call plays. Obviously, it’s not working. Do like Auburn and see what the defense is doing and change the play at the line.

I don’t think Croom’s pride will stop him from doing what needed to be done 2 yrs ago. The disappointing thing about this whole mess is that Croom is an offensive guy. When he called plays for the Lions, they were unstoppable.

  50. nashdawg Says:

Woody is cozy in his spot as the OC. He knows it and it reads that way in his statements above. Those who think that the current coaching staff can turn things around, as the great Dr. Kent Sills would often say, “that and 25 cents will get you a cup of coffee!” It ain’t going to happen. 5 years folks… Even the “Bear” didn’t take that long of time to build a winning program on the field of play. Not off the field…but actually playing the game of football. We are spending millions of dollars for a program that can’t play consistently, competitive football. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out. What’s clouding the view of our athletic department is pride. Too proud to make the hard call and remove this staff!

  51. bikerdawg Says:

    For MSU21

Kansas 29,000 UG studs; West VA 28,000; South FL 34,000; OK State 23,000.
Univ. of AL 21,000; Auburn 20,000

    MSU 13,000.

Those extra students graduating year in and year out translates to $$$$$$$$. If you put the 3 largest schools in MS together, we would barely top enrollment at South FL if at all. That is why those schools can pay out the big bucks for coaches, facilities or anything else they need.

  52. carwwest Says:

woody has no clue….croom has no clue how to fix the problem….about jackie, people can say all they want about this is all his fault but i bet everybody was cheering when we won the western division and and played tenn in the conference championship game….he won a lot of games for us and i do agree he screwed up because he lost the repect and control of his players and they quit on him but i still think he was a better in game coach than croom…like it or not croom lost us the la tech game and the auburn game because he still has woody around….the comments woody made are comical…they dont know how to fix our problem…i hope croom and byrne sit down and discuss the future of this program and come to an agreement because this is going to be a downward spiral if we dont do what is necessary….

  53. carwwest Says:

oh and i know the program is better off but still has some trouble makers…mike brown and co., pegues been in trouble twice, riddell last year…so lets not say croom is just a complete saint….we are still better off though…

  54. msu21 Says:

Wow bikerdude…..thats what I call a little R&D!! Hope you didn’t lose your job over finding those numbers! Even more reason the state of MS should acquire the State Lottery!!

  55. theconquistador2 Says:

Do you really think that money from a lottery would go towards the athletic department? More than the athletic department requires money and the College Board tends to put more emphasis on education than athletics.

Are you basing your stance on how state lotteries help some baseball teams with scholarships? If so, those scholarships are academic not athletic.

  56. skydawg706 Says:

What the $%#@ did Wxxdy say – mean? – That’s my job, that’s my responsibility …”

Guess it means his job is to make excuses – not provide answers/solutions to problems.

Does he have plans to run for a political answer – gave political answer – did not say anything.

Do we have a coaching problem or players: unable to transform from the pratice filed to the game or the only place what they are practing work on the practice field.

Do you guys recall hearing before due to players not being able to pick up the WC scheme of things – we were limited to what could be called – as Woody said in Clarion Ledger “cannot ask more of them – cannot add more to them” – appears hand writing on the wall – WC is not for MSU.

Speaking of the Bear and knowing that Croom played for him – why the WC – no way u’ll convince me WC would be his choice.
