Sylvester Croom Postgame Quotes

by

“More than anything else right now, I’m evaluating myself. I have to look at what I’m doing, because I know we’re a better football team than that, but we’re not showing it on the field.”

“They didn’t do anything (defensively) we hadn’t worked against. Absolutely nothing.”

“Obviously I didn’t get them to do what they were supposed to do. That’s bottom line.”

On mental lapses: “I don’t know, I’m just going to be honest with you. Because that’s not us. We’re doing too many things to beat ourselves – the penalties, the false starts, blocked field goal. We had one blocked field goal since we’ve been here.”

“I’ll look at everything I’m doing, because that’s the first place I check when things aren’t working well. I expect everybody, coaches and players, to keep working as hard as they can and to be totally focused on doing what’s asked of them. That’s what I expect, and that’s what I want to do.”

well he is actually taking responsibility but its about 4 years too late….i still say we better hear about woody’s resignation by monday or else….

  2. dawgface52 Says:

I wonder if he truly thinks Woody is the man for the job at OC. Of course we have more problems than just Woody, but that is a big one.

  3. nextyeardawg Says:

At least he’s starting to go public with self-criticism. There is little doubt in my mind he has some things privately he would like to change or adjust but hasn’t gone public with those exact thoughts yet. They probably do involve personnel changes. He might have even realized he’s not meant to coach college ball. Who knows? He can’t take many more losses like this b/c he knows that his job is on the line and any legacy he might have had people to remember him for.

  4. lollipopkid Says:

Until Croom says, “We’ve decided to go in a new direction with our offense…We’ve let McCorvey go.” I don’t want to hear anything from him. Here’s a new direction: forward. Fire McCorvey today! He is predgical. That’s a new word I just made up because there isn’t a word in the our language that encompasses how much he sucks out loud.

  5. carwwest Says:

it will not get better…you can tell in his comments after the game the players’ and the coaches’ confidence is shot and i dont see us salvaging this season with our current staff…i said the coaches were reaching and it showed…

  6. thespear Says:

evaluate woody! glad lee finally got some minutes

  7. thespear Says:

    ….
    along with elliot

  8. midnightdawg Says:

Can’t replace Woody in midseason. No one qualified to take his spot, and no time to implement a new system. We’re just gonna have to ride this one out boys (and girls). We’re gonna beat Arkansas, our bowl game is the Egg Bowl (again) and we’ll find out what Byrne and Croom are made of in terms of staffing decisions going into ’09.

Pegues is gonna play on Sundays next year. I hope he represents us well

  9. theconquistador2 Says:

There’s no way to describe how inept our offense is. Special teams is horrible and the defense isn’t as good as we think. A good defense doesn’t give up nearly 500 yards with 95% of those being on the ground. Auburn’s offense is bad and it made our defense look better than it actually is. Much like how our offense makes other teams defenses look stout. Don’t forget that LA Tech moved the ball fairly well against our D.

I am officially off the Croom and Co. bandwagon. Changes need to be made and I’m beginning to think we need to go in a different direction and I don’t mean just the OC.

  10. skydawg706 Says:

Not looking forward to next week – LSU.

Listen to Croom after the game comments (radio) – forgot who was asking him the questions – when Croom agreed with him that they (coaching staff & players) had to stick together – put aside all the negative vibes (something like along those lines) – felt both of them was talking about us “the fans”.

  11. skydawg706 Says:

BRAD – Croom may have answered this question before – do not recall – and I know it is a few years down the road – like many of other fans need a refresher course.

Knowing the area he would be coaching in (South, SEC), and the schools he would be recuriting mostly (MS)……

Why did he pick the West Coast Offense?

Like I’ve heard many coaches say you got to build program around the talent that you have (recuriting areas).

  12. carwwest Says:

if you havent noticed skydawg, we dont make very logical decisions with our football team….but i think that is the offense croom ran when he was with the packers and lions…not sure but that is what im guessing….

  13. dadawg Says:

I have been a Croom fan for a long time, but I think his business is about w’s. This is going to be a long, long season for the DAWGS. This team is not very well coached or they are scared to death in games. It does not matter which. When a team looks like the current team, the coach has to take responsibility. We will have to wait this season out, but I think it will be Croom’s last as head coach at MSU. As excited as we were last year, this program has not progressed in five years.

  14. carwwest Says:

honestly i was never really on the croom bandwagon but if anybody asked, i would always tell them i hoped he proved me wrong because that meant we were winning ballgames….i dont discredit anything he has done at state but i think people need to be reasonable about who is best for our university and that is obviously not the current staff….we will have to wait till the end of the season but i dont think we should wait till monday to see wxxdy leave….

  15. spaceghost1 Says:

Crxxm won’t be the only one evaluating Crxxm. I’ve gotta think Byrne will do the same on Mon.

  16. bantyrooster1 Says:

Byrne doesn’t have a nut in his sack if he doesn’t say something about Croom improving quickly. Byrne has a chance to make a statement about MSU sports right now. If he gets up and says that CROOM must make improvement now or we will look at other options then he’s a wuss. Football is the money maker and how much money will the Walrus generate with a team like this? Croom sucks and I’m sick of this crap!

  17. dawgface52 Says:

I doubt if you will hear anything significant from Greg during the year. Anything Greg does will be behind closed doors. Probably after the season. My guess is Greg will let Croom know after the season that a change has to be made at the OC position. Croom will either do it or Greg will do it for him. And who knows, maybe Croom will quit at that point. We can only hope.

  18. 2thdoc Says:

I think your right dawgface. Cutcliffe Part 2 because Crxxm is too stubborn to admit Wxxdy is dead weight and Byrne will show them both the door.

  19. carwwest Says:

i dont know anymore…im thinking there is more of a problem than just wxxdy…i think if we only win 2-3 games this year, byrne will show both crxxm and wxxdy the door or at least i hope…there is NO reason for crxxm to keep his job if we win only 3 games again…

  20. skydawg706 Says:

Oh yea, see the Rebels had bad day at home also.

If we survive against LSU with out any injuries – we may have a chance – if Carroll and staff have all the mental errors and missed assigments figured out – how many games is it going to take.

  21. mathistondawg Says:

lollipopkid – I think your post made my day. I think I will wear a bag on my head and a t-shirt with the message “our offense is predgical, and yours isn’t” scrawled across it at the next home game.

I have always told my friends about what a fine person coach Croom is – AND he is. However, things are going from bad to worse. This season is dangerously close to being over – and it had so much promise.

  22. bantyrooster1 Says:

Even if state upset LSU, I still say CROOM and WOODY must go. Take the whole staff with them, let’s start over. If we must continue to go through seasons of 3 wins we might as well do it with a football staff and not a public relations firm. I’m sick and tired of hearing about what a great person Croom is off the field. They don’t award points for that crap. I appreciate the fact that he’s considered a good guy but come on, enough is enough.

  23. carwwest Says:

banty has a point…i want crxxm and wxxdy gone too….everybody can see this marriage is beyond repair….anybody read that article on scout.com??..i just hope if crxxm isnt here next year, tyler russell still wants to be a dog!!
