On the Links, On Tap

I had a story today on QB Tyson Lee, who’s now the No. 1 guy under center. I feel like it’s an incomplete story, because offensive coordinator Woody McCorvey failed to return two phone messages and blew off the media before practice, but I had a deadline and had to file it. Guess it turned out OK.

I mentioned in the story that Lee (5-11, 190 pounds) is the SEC’s smallest quarterback. I compiled a list of current starting QBs in the league and their size:

Jonathan Crompton, Tennessee: 6-4, 220
Casey Dick, Arkansas: 6-2, 215
Stephen Garcia, South Carolina: 6-2, 221
Mike Hartline, Kentucky: 6-6, 204
Jarrett Lee, LSU: 6-2, 216
Chris Nickson, Vandy: 6-1, 212
Jevan Snead, Ole Miss: 6-3, 215
Matthew Stafford, Georgia: 6-3, 228
Tim Tebow, Florida: 6-3, 240
Chris Todd, Auburn: 6-4, 217
John Parker Wilson, Alabama: 6-2, 213

Coach Sylvester Croom will be on the SEC teleconference around 11 a.m., and I’ll also try to put together my newest SEC power rankings. That oughta be fun. Then later, I’ll head to Starkville.

Also, here is a story from The Tennessean on Vandy’s offensive line.

6’4 Tyler Russell & his big arm cant get here soon enough. hopefully this new group will come in under a new OC.

I think the only thing State fans can do at this point is get down on their hands and knees and beg Jackie Sherrill to come back…at least he’d come in fired up, grab some JUCO transfers throw some tires and rims around the state and steal some recruits, plug ther holes and get you guys a trip to Birmingham for the Papa-John’s.com Bowl

Good article Brad, full of optimism. I have to admit, before the LSU game, I did not want Lee in there. IN the LA Tech Game, he looked like he had no clue, even in the SELA game. NOW, I am a Tyson Lee fan. He played smart, made safe and eay throws that picked apart the #5 LSU. I guess Woody is not a good coach, hmm?

This off week is the key to the rest of the season, can MSU bounce back? So far, as I recall, we have won big games after off weeks: 2004- Florida, 2006 & 2007- Alabama. The season is looking better

  4. nashdawg Says:

Ahhh…bamamanreturns, man! You’re just a jealous soul who witnessed the years that Miss. State football competed against you guys year in and year out.

  5. BirdZ! Says:

joe, we also lost to ARK 3 times following an off week.

  6. carwwest Says:

first i dont care what the relative of lee on here says…the kid is not 5’11″…he just isnt…but the kid played good against LSU…i would not say he picked them apart…averaging 6.7 yards an attempt and 10 yards a catch…not bad but not picking them a part…hope the kid succeeds though cause hopefully that means we are winning…just dont see him tearing it up though with mccrxxmy at the helm…

  7. imabulldog Says:

why does everyone say Lee looked so terrible in the LaTech game?

To me his one mistake was sliding short of the marker before half, but really?he was 10-15 for 85 yards, and looked way more athletic than a duck throwing Carroll. And to be honest, was a dropped pass away on 4th down from being our Qb the rest of the year.

I like Wes, but I’ve been calling for Lee since SELA. Lee is the man, and has the ability to do what Carroll can’t do this year- which is manage the game and not make mistakes. And he does it all with a lot more flash

  8. carwwest Says:

he did look terrible in the la tech game… well maybe not terrible as much as completely lost…i dont know what this flash is you are talking about…we havent had a flashy QB in a decade…

  9. osutrisha Says:

bamamanreturns has a big mouth on here but nick satan wont schedule my damn team any damn time soon like tennessee did are saban and nutty nutt little bed butties

  10. imabulldog Says:

again, I don’t see where the terrible comes in, but I wont argue with you Carr.

And by flash, I mean he is a good looking, athletic Qb, who can scramble and run for yards when he needs to.

I know we don’t necessarily have ‘flash’, but he has more than any other Qb’s had at State in a long time.

  11. rwriffe Says:

Osutrisha, I am assuming that your user name is in reference to Ohio State. If I’m wrong then I apologize. I wanted to make the point that if it is Ohio State then they don’t want any part of Alabama or for that matter they don’t want any part of any of about 9 SEC teams.

I’m not a tide or bamareturns fan but OSU is overrated and your comment is a little off base. Especially when you look at OSU’s non conference schedule in past years. Cupcakes galore.

  12. osutrisha Says:

Listen here little [deleted] rwriffle we wouldn’t have damn cupcake galore if houston nutt had signed the contract ohio state sent him back at arkansas or if saban would sign the contract we sent this [deleted] season. Saban also declined Virginia Tech’s offer to play them in Atlanta opening game of the season for 2009. Why don’t you let Pete damn Carroll know his team is a cupcake or Mack Brown of Texas? I’m sure they’d love to know that piece of information you spewed from your mouth.

  13. skydawg706 Says:

    BirdZ –

true we may have lost 3 times to Ark, but why not think postive on Dawgs having an off-week. Good time to for some players to get better from those samll nagging injuries, etc.

  14. rwriffe Says:

Ok osutrish, big deal, you play one or two tough games a year and they may very well be out of conference. The truth however, is that your conference schedule is [deleted]. Have osu play an 8 game schedule in the SEC and you would finally find out that they are [deleted]. They would be at best a 4 and 4 team in the SEC. Again I say that they don’t want any of Bama, Auburn, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and on and on. Oh, and by the way what was that score in the osu/USC game? Pretty lopsided in USC’s favor if I remember. Then USC falls to unranked Oregon State. Yea, USC another overrated team. You buckeye fans kill me with your visions of granduer. If you make to a bowl game against an SEC opponent you will get more of what you got from Florida in the last National Championship game you played in. Better speed, better defense and better coaching. Get over osu. They aren’t all that.

  15. rwriffe Says:

One other thing osutrisha, not many SEC teams are going to give osu the opportunity to upgrade their schedule with an SEC team. What’s in it for an SEC school? They win and they’ve just beat osu. So What?

  16. rwriffe Says:

Oh, and Pete Damn Carrol don’t want any of the SEC either.

  17. cnd46 Says:

Wow, gone for one day and all this breaks out. Anyway, looking forward to a weekend not worrying on State football this weekend and watching Auburn play Vanderbilt. In my opinion a very underrated game.

  18. rwriffe Says:

I agree cnd the AU Vandy game will be a good one. I think Vandy’s offense will be handled by Auburn and Auburn wins 20/13

  19. bigdraws Says:

“Listen here little [deleted] rwriffle ”

LOL, you kiss your mother with that mouth?

  20. rwriffe Says:

LOL, yea draws. That was a first for me. Being called a little [deleted] on here. I may have gone a little over the top with my response but I think she gets the picture.

  21. darkcooger Says:

I love it when people talk about how great their conference is in football when clearly the SEC dominates the sport. I mean, we OWN football. Just look at last bowl season: a 12-team conference puts 9 teams into bowl games and brings home 7 wins.

Yes, sure, some other conference has more national championships, but that was then; this is now. Welcome to the modern era of football.
