Croom Says … He’s Got a Plan

by

Well, of course he does. But it could involve some wrinkles. MSU coach Sylvester Croom said today that he will plan on getting another player – who he wouldn’t name – involved in the offense this week. He also said he’s been wanting to utilize third-string quarterback Chris Relf in some manner. I’m assuming Relf is not the aforementioned unnamed player. Any guesses?

Anyway, some Croom quotes from today’s press conference:

• On that mystery player: “We do have one more guy that we may insert into a package to try and see if we can get something from him. But of course you’re not going to get his name.”

• On Relf: “I’ve thought about him all season long, but he’s not ready to play – except on a limited basis. There may be a point where I just may insert him in. … For the last three weeks, we’ve been looking for a spot to insert him in the game and do some certain things with him, the things that he knows well. … We feel like in certain situations, he could help us.”

• On LT Derek Sherrod: “He’s graded well all year long, but to go up against a guy like (Tennessee’s Robert) Ayers and play as well as he played, it was phenomenal. It was fun watching him play. It was a tremendous battle over there, and from our standpoint, Derek won that battle.”

• On how he scouts teams (focusing on an opponent’s most recent games): “Once you get past the last three or four games, every team changes as the season goes along. As you go through a season, there’s a metamorphosis that goes on within a team, and their philosophy changes about themselves as the season goes along.”

• On Middle Tennessee State: “We’re not in a position to be overlooking any game.”

• Injuries: Starting C J.C. Brignone (concussion) and backup DE Jimmie Holmes (calf contusion) will sit out practice today but should be ready Saturday.

If he puts in Pegues at this point – after everybody and his brother has been harping for him to try this for 2 years- then he’s basically admitting that he’s clueless. And he’d be correct.

  2. imabulldog Says:

Well! Lets get to metamorphosizing and kick some butt…

*Call Bill Nye the Science Guy for our Off.Cord.

*Wish we had 4 more like Sherrod, thats why I say-recruit 15 OL’s

-Still think we should look to get Muschamp as our new HC

  3. imabulldog Says:

Heck, aint there a Bowden ‘available’

  4. carwwest Says:

still word vomit…if he does put pegues in, it does show that he is feeling the pressure and grasping at straws…shmuley is right, EVERYBODY has been saying that for a while and if he is just now doing that then he has no clue what he is doing…and relf “isnt ready to play yet”??…he has been here for a good while and nobody is expecting him to come out and throw for 200 yards but let the guy run, he is huge!!…and the playcalling that they have given lee is not hard…handoff handoff five yard pass…if relf cant do that then he shouldnt be on the team…and really, the last three weeks, you cant find a place to put him in the game even if it is just a few snaps??….and crxxm tried this mystery thing once already this year talking about the la tech game…we see how that worked out….

  5. maroon1white Says:

Really…unless its Colt McCoy I don’t think it matters.

  6. luckydog20 Says:

I bet we put Jesse Bowman in at QB when we go to the wish bone formation. That is what I am hoping for.

  7. carwwest Says:

    brian kelly, cincinnati
    tommy bowden
    GARY PATTERSON, TCU
    todd graham, tulsa
    skip holtz, ECU
    chris peterson, boise state
    will muschamp, Texas
    bronco mendenhall, BYU

i am bored and this is my list in no particular order of people that i think would consider coming to state for the right money…they all make less than crxxm does…there are some on the list that probably will go some places bigger and better than state but these are just off the top of my head, i would rather have a proven head coach so i was hesitant to put muschamp on there…i do think he would succeed though…anyone on this list would bring a ton of excitement to fire to the program…

oh and gary patterson has sec coach written all over him!!!

  8. carwwest Says:

    i forgot…
    craig bohl, north dakota state

  9. darkcooger Says:

If Woody’s gone at the end of the season, I’d be willing to give Croom more time to prove that he is not the problem himself. If the only way to get Woody out of the picture is to get rid of Croom, then Croom has to go.

As far as doing something secretive and surprising this week, why? Why not save it for an SEC game. If it’s going to shake up our offense and potentially throw our opponents off, I’d rather do it in a game that people actually care about. Nobody’s going to care about the MTSU game if we can get another SEC win or two in its place.

On the flip side of that, I can begin to understand how the Tennessee fans feel and I almost – ALMOST – don’t want a successful finale to the season because I don’t want to hear any of the “I told you it was working” bull crap that makes him harder to fire, should that prove necessary. Almost. At the end of the day, the fate of the Dawgs is much more important than Croom, so I’m still pulling for wins. Go Dawgs!

    Mr. Byrne… IT’S TIME!

  11. carwwest Says:

coogar there is no reason to ask why crxxm does anything…there is no logic behind anything he does or says…it is time to move on…

  12. bleedmaroon Says:

I’ve got a plan too…..drink enough beer to drown out all this bulls***.

  13. bleedmaroon Says:

what an idiot! im speechless! hell there are jr high coaches who know more about football than this man.

  14. sawltydawg Says:

I can’t say enough positive things about what Croom has done for our program and how I so much appreciate everything he has done. For whatever reason we just aren’t getting the job done. We have shown that we are patient and we will support our beloved Maroon and White but something has got to give. I don’t know if that is a obtaining a new head coach or spring cleaning the coach’s staff. I see all the lists of coachs people have in mind, if a new head coach is the prescription, what about……..

JEFF BOWERS ? numerous winning seasons at Southern Miss, numerous conference championships, Liberty Bowl victories, has always had a solid offense and defense and not to mention he still had to recruit against STATE and OLE MISS even though he was in a diffrent conference(and did a hell of a job).

  15. carwwest Says:

sawlty, i have a great deal of admiration for bowers for what he did at USM with less talent…USM looks dumb for getting rid af him as they should…i would be fine with the hire but i think we can make a more exciting one…a lot of people dont want him at state because he was at usm…the whole dont pick up the girl the little brother dumped thing…but like i have said many many times…gary patterson and todd graham should be the first to get looked at…they recruit against the likes of texas, oklahoma, texas tech, oklahoma state, etc…more so gary patterson because he always has a very stingy defense with a good offense….but then again graham knows how to score…oh well, i can dream cant i?? GO DAWGS!! …DOOM CRXXM!!!

I live in tulsa and think that Graham would be a great catch, but they are already paying him pretty well here…

  18. studentvelocity Says:

what is it…to eat more KFC!

  19. carwwest Says:

yeah i know they are paying him decent now but there are a lot of coaches that would love to get their foot in the door in the sec…maybe we are in for a miracle….wait, like i said i can dream…

  20. imabulldog Says:

If CC gets rid of Wxxdy, then put me down for one more year.

If CC doesn’t get rid of him, CC needs to go! I love the man, but common sense goes a long ways.

We gotta get something going. Definitely have to win our home games, especially to gain “confidence” needed for our remaining road games. As bad as I hate to say it, Bama and Ole Miss could beat us by the same score

  21. tebmsu97 Says:

I would like to put my name in the Croom has to go ring. I am sad to say it, I like the guy, but he has proven he isn’t getting it done. Firing Woody at this point would do nothing for my confidence. Woody should have been let go before this year.

I like the mid major coach idea more than a coordinator, but I think we may have a better shot at getting a top flight coordinator looking for his big break.

Are there any rumblings in places of power that a coaching change may be coming if things continue?

  22. jcdawgman18 Says:

The level of common sense on this board is what is pathetic. IT”S NOT GONNA BE PEGUES. I can give you two names as to who it will be. Both are freshman. One is Arceto Clark, the other is Terrance Davis. If you kept up with recruiting instead of just complaining about anything and everything, you would know about these guys, especially TD. Terrance Davis is from GA. He played QB in high school but will primarily be a WR here. The reason we haven’t seen him yet is twofold. First of all, he had trouble getting through the clearinghouse. He didn’t come in till after two-a-days and all were over. Then, he gets here and pulls a hamstring withing the first week, and wham, he can’t practice for a month or so.
If TD had gotten here on time, I feel sure that he would have had a package at QB to be added to the mix. He has been practicing again recently, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him in the game.
And before some of you go find that Davis was a 2* and start complaining about that, guess who still recruited him (hard) after he committed to us? None other than the University of Florida.

  23. imabulldog Says:

Hey JCDawg, I know someone who know’s you- Gary from Columbus. He’s the man! Im also from Meridian, live in Memphis.

Anyway, I always hoped we’d see Piggy play a little out of the shotgun, but once we didnt do it from the start-I knew we wouldnt ever use him.

I think Clark and Davis are two good possibilities. I think Robinson could even take a snap or two

  24. thingreenline Says:

How funny would it be it was in fact Pegues.
It might make someone on here feel like a 2*

  25. thingreenline Says:

…IF it was in fact Pegues.

  26. carwwest Says:

jc, if he plays them and plays them enough not to get their redshirt, im going to hunt him down and beat the crap out of him…i think both will be good players but i do not want to waste this year for them…i dont know all the rules about it but i’m just saying, if that happens, crxxm will have stooped to a new level of stupidity…

  27. imabulldog Says:

Just think of Omar-during Sherill’s last year

  28. imabulldog Says:

Thats funny TGline, I have to say, funny 🙂

  29. jcdawgman18 Says:

ima, Gary is quite a character. We go back and forth, but he’s a great, great guy.
Touche, TGL, but I wouldn’t say it if I thouht it was him.
Carwest, it is an interesting thing with either of those two. If one of them could come in, help us win, and play a pretty decent amount in the last 6 (pay attention to that number) games, then I think the experience gained this year would outweigh the loss of a year down the road. I say this because if they came in and got some experience, they would be able to hit the ground running next fall instead of having an adjustment period then. So it’s a fine balance. But if I didn’t think it would really help me win or if I didn’t think I could get them on the field enough for the rest of the year to get them ready, I would sit them for sure.
