Fall Baseball Update

by

The air is cooling and the leaves are falling, and that means one thing: fall baseball. Mississippi State wrapped up its autumn drills on Sunday, and in today’s Journal I take a look at how new coach John Cohen is toughening up and preparing the Bulldogs, who are coming off a last-place SEC finish in 2008.

I spoke with Cohen, pitcher Ricky Bowen and outfielder Grant Hogue. Here are some extras that didn’t make the story:

• Hogue: “It’s a team sport, but you’re the one up there hitting. It’s more of an individual sport, so being able to scrimmage 26 times puts you on a stage, too.”

• Bowen: “Things are definitely a lot tougher. It’s a hundred percent effort from the time you step on the field and cross that line. Before, it was an up-and-down as far as all-out effort. Learning how to be able to get your body to go 100 percent all the time, it’s hard. It takes some time to get used to.”

• Cohen, on Bowen: “I can’t see him being a Sunday guy. I think he’s going to have to be a Friday or Saturday guy for us to be successful.”

• Hogue: “I don’t think the team unity or anything like that was bad last year. We stuck together. I know the win and loss column wasn’t what we wanted. You have to remember that Mississippi State baseball is such a tradition, and (Cohen) played before us, he won SEC championships, he’s been on the winning teams.”

• Bowen, on pitching depth: “I think there’s definitely some depth there. Coach talks about we want to have 10 solid guys – 10 guys we can count on. I don’t know if we’ve got 10 yet, but I have faith in the coaches, and our guys that we’re going to get where we need to be. I think everybody wants to get better, and hopefully everybody’s willing to pay the price.”

• Cohen: “If you had to categorize offensively this team, the thing that jumps out at you is we do have some above-average runners in our lineup.”

Bowen’s quote on 100% effort and having your body ready is so important. Cohen has them on nutrition plans and workout plans. Ronny Baseball never would have done that.

Thanks, BLocke. It is refreshing to read something positive about state athletics for a change. Bring on basketball then baseball.

Speaking of basketball, tickets came in the mail yesterday. I think there are still a few season tickets left if anyone is looking for 1 single ticket. Don’t know if any tickets are still available for 2 seats together.

  5. BirdZ! Says:

According to “Thursdays with Greg Byrne” there are about 30 tickets left, 2th.

    Oh, and this, too:

“As a reminder, seven pairs of courtside seats in the Hump remain available for purchase. Hopefully, you attended the exhibition game this past Saturday and saw the padded courtside seats along the floor. These seats are available for $12,000 per pair.”
