Here is the brief that will appear in tomorrow’s paper, verbatim, about Noxubee County star Shaunessy Smith signing with MSU’s basketball team:
STARKVILLE – Noxubee County basketball standout Shaunessy Smith had two reasons to celebrate Wednesday: It was his birthday, and he signed a national letter of intent with Mississippi State.
Smith, a 6-foot-6 guard, is a two-time all-state performer who averaged 25.1 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists per game as a junior. He’s listed as the 99th overall prospect by PrepStars.com and the 23rd-best shooting guard by Scout.com.
ESPN recruiting director Bob Gibbons called Smith “perhaps the most under-the-rader talent in the class of 2009.”
The fourth-year starter will bring athleticism and ball-handling skills to MSU.
“He has a terrific upside in that he comes from an outstanding high school where he got great coaching,” State coach Rick Stansbury said. “So, his adjustment to the college level will be minimized.”
