I’m headed to the Bryan Building – MSU football headquarters – because BulldawgJunction has reported that Sylvester Croom is resigning. I have received confirmation that assistant coaches, AD Greg Byrne and sports information director Mike Nemeth, along with football liaison Joe Galbraith, are holed up inside Bryan. Doors are locked.

I LOVE GREG BYRNE—-Finally an AD that is not afraid to buck the system.
We got our man for the baseball team and now he is not afraid to make a change with the football team. Things are looking up for MSU Athletics.

Please never ever allow anyone connected to alabama be involved with our football program again. Croom is a good man. But you have to be an adulterating criminal to be successful (Nick Satan, Hustler Nutt, Urban Mower, etc.) As I always say: “You can’t win a national championship without a few criminals on your team.” If Bama wins big I expect Tubby to resign as well. Biggest problem I have is who to go after. Nobody worth anything wants to come to Starkville. Croom cleaned up the mess but just doesn’t have to ability to motivate week after week or make crucial decisions during the game. We need a real snot knocker to motivate and put fear in our opponents.

Croom is a good man but he just wasn’t the coach for us. I for one am sad for him but glad for our University. About the recruits, maybe we can get someone with an offensive mindset and get some more recruits.

All I’m asking for in a head coach is a man who wants to win, and doesn’t take a knee down three before halftime (Auburn), or turns down a personal foulwith zero on the clock at halftime to go to the locker room instead of taking a shot at the endzone (Tennessee).

On ESPN they mentioned Charlie Strong which is no surprise but they also mentioned Tyrone Nix. Would love to get Peterson more than Graham or Kelly but both have had success. It will be interesting. A big name would be nice for name recognition but…..

It is a sad day in Starkville. As a person Croom was one of the best we could have ever had as a head coach. We won’t miss the losses, but we will miss the character of the man. To me it wasn’t Croom- it was Woody and the lack of offense. I doubt if he will get this…but we wish him the best and may he enjoy retirement…I would with 1.7 million dollar.

Well everybody got what they wanted now what do you bitch about when nothing gets any better. I always bleed maroon, and I would have like to have seen some coaching changes and see what happened and live with Croom another season. But, more power to the next guy, and hope he wins right away.

I agree spear. I just hopes it generates some energy in Starkville and we can build on the “foundation” Croom laid. He did some good things for us and I am grateful and I wish his family the best. I want someone who hits the recruiting trail hard and can keep Mississippi’s top high school grads from leaving the state.

I like Croom as a person. I think he is a great man. I would have given him another year if he would’ve been open to make a lot of changes. I just hope we can get a PROVEN head coach and not just some assistant hoping for his chance. Coach Croom, thanks for all that you have done for our program. I wish you and your family well.

I would like to have seen Croom for one more year with OC, OL, Special Team changes.
Believe Croom believed in his staff and planned to walk out the door with them.
Going to be interesting for sure to see Bryne goes for as a HC. Need someone that can recruit also ( attracts recruits).

Certainly not the news I expected to see scroll acroos CBS during the UGS game. Like most have said, I am sorry it had to happen to Coach Croom because he seemed to be a great man, but he just didn’t seem to have that something it takes to get the job done at this level.
I am very excited by Byrne leading this search, I think he showed well during the baseball search and will do equally well now.

Sylvester Croom is a good man no ? He deserves a lot of credit for the good he has done at MSU.GB, please hire the right man no matter the cost. As Saban has shown, you hire the right man and it will pay dividends. You have a chance to rewrite MSU history and go down as a savior of our athletic program. Git-r-dun son!

I know probably many of us here at MSU don’t care for Nick Saban. However, I think he’s probably one of the best coaches in the nation. In only his second season at Alabama, he’s got them near a national championship already. What about trying to hire his right hand man? I was just on Alabama’s website and that man looked to be Kevin Steele. He’s the associate head coach, head defensive coach, and he also coaches the linebackers. And oh, by the way, he’s got a reputation for being one of the best recruiters in the country. What more could you ask for?

My prayers have been answered! Now let’s pray for success in the hiring of his replacement. I have trust in Mr. Byrne to do the job right and he certainly has my full support.
I have great respect for coach Croom as a person, but I’ve made no secret of my assessment of his head coaching ineffectiveness. I wish him the best as he steps down. My prayers are with him and his family. I thank him for his effort to improve the program.
When you are at the bottom, there’s only one way to go. I look forward to a new start in building our program and hope it becomes competitive one!

Chris Peterson or Gary Patterson are both excellent choices in my opinion. I just hope we don’t lose our defensive tenacity with a guy like either of these at the helm.
Croom will be back in the NFL coaching after the 1st of the year. The man has assistant coaching talent. I wish him success.
If Byrne keeps on this trail he could definitely rewrite the stereotypes we have to endure.

Have a friend from Clemson who hates Bowden (course they have a lot higher expectations year in year out than us). Don’t think I could tolerate UT fans ragging us about taking their leftovers (Fulmer); Surely we can get better than Dooley; But I don’t think we can get Peterson. Patterson may be a legitimate shot. My hope is this…after the last 3 (?) coaches with defensive bents have left us wondering if we will EVER score, lets hire a Offensive minded HC. Harbison proved this year what he is made of and I wonder how much better they would have been without injuries and playing 80% of the downs because the offense went 3 and out. I would be fine with keeping Harbison…but more than anything lets find a offensive minded HC.

Hey guys. MSU has been going through this for years. The only big name coach we have ever had (JWS) came in and won (until he and his teams lost interest, which is still a mystery). Bellard did ok but just couldn’t cut it in the SEC. Experimenting with assistant coaches is NOT the answer. If we want to win and win consistently, we have to get a big name coach. Yea, it’s going to cost some money but you get what you pay for. A big name coach draws immediate attention to your program and gets recruits. My vote is for Spurrier. For sure, we would have top rate quarterbacks, top rate recruits and an offense that will NOT be rated in the bottom percentile in the nation. Seem like an impossibility? Then how did South Carolina get him? If I remember, Spurrier’s name was kicked around when Croom was hired. Who knows, he may be ready for a good challenge.
