Day 6: Craziness Continues

by

In today’s Daily Journal, you will find yet another column by yours truly, examining the absurdity that such a secretive coach search can beget. It sure can be entertaining, though, can’t it?

In other coaching news, here is a detailed story from the Seattle Times about new Washington coach Steve Sarkisian. On the other vacancy fronts:

• Auburn is taking a look at Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt as well as Florida State offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher. Interesting, because Nutt is in a good place right now – just got there – and Fisher is supposed to succeed Bobby Bowden at FSU.

• Syracuse has interviewed Saints offensive coordinator Doug Marrone. Also, ex-Cuse coach Greg Robinson might wind up at LSU.

More to come.

What’s with the Charlie Strong comment, Brad? What are you trying to say, that they all look alike? You racist S.O.B.

  2. tebmsu97 Says:

To add to your craziness theme, on the radio here in BR (1210am The Score) Jordy Holpberg (not sure on the spelling) lists Sly as a possible candidate for the LSU DC job.

    His list of three were:
    The Tenn DC
    Orgeron
    Croom

  3. goldendawg Says:

First of all, I think it would be hilarious if Auburn took Nutt away from Ole Miss.
Secondly, if Auburn is really considering this, it makes our search a bit more urgent. We don’t want to have to compete with them for a coach. We are not looking at the same candidates as Auburn but Ole Miss would likely express interest in the same guys that we are currently considering.

  4. Brad Locke Says:

I was actually sitting at the table across from the Strong look-a-like and Googled a mug shot of Strong. After studying both the picture and the dude – surreptitiously, of course – I decided it wasn’t him. I was pretty sure, anyway. Journalism at its best. *sigh*

  5. hokdog91 Says:

What ever happened to all the discussions about Major Applewhite that went on prior to Croom leaving? I never see his name as being considered for any coaching vacancies.

  6. nashvillebulldog Says:

Good greif, I can only imagine the shake-up if Nutt gets bought out to Auburn!

We need to find a coach quick…

  7. carwwest Says:

i do think we need a coach pretty quick but byrne hasnt done anything so far that makes me think he isnt doing whats best for the program….but i hope we get our coach pretty soon…..but applewhite is not ready to be a HC, if he comes in as a OC then that would probably be fine but not a HC yet….

  8. msualum01 Says:

Be patient, guys. My guess is that we’ll have a new coach by Monday.

  9. omahadog Says:

My guess would be that the SEC wouldn’t allow any news release of a new coach to take away from the SEC Championship game. This is not saying that Byrne has come to agreement with a coach, but if he had, I could see the SEC making that request. Look for something to come out after the game. What do you think, Brad?

  10. Brad Locke Says:

    I can see that, omaha.

  11. thespear Says:

5 Auburn recruits have withdrawn their commitment…. get tubby and plenty of these guys will follow!!!!!

  12. hokdog91 Says:

Post-BCS Selection Show, Peterson confirms he is leaving Boise for Starkville. Byrne agrees to paint the field Maroon and a new era begins at State.

  13. skoalbandit Says:

I don’t understand why MS State won’t stop being so stubborn and just do what is best for the SEC. They should drop down to Div II where they might be competitive and let Delta State join the SEC. I think DSU would make the bottom half of the SEC more creditable then State does now. Plus this would be a whole new experience for the younger state fans and give them an opportunity to finally pull for a winning program. Life would be great.

  14. msudawginbama Says:

guys over @ sixpack are saying its Petersen…
just wanted to start a fire… go check it

  15. omahadog Says:

We’re not going to hear a word until the SEC game is played. The best story out of all of this is the Auburn Asst. Coaches’ wives going off on the Auburn A.D., and Bama’s Nick Saban.

  16. carwwest Says:

yeah i keep hearing we pretty much got our guy yesterday and we are wating to announce it next week or this weekend…just what i heard…

  17. 2thdoc Says:

I’m gonna enjoy the heck outta this weekend. Petersen would be huge for the recruits and Boone better get out the checkbook if the Rebels want to keep Houston out of Auburn.

  18. thespear Says:

Peterson would really be something…. I would love to see Anthony Dixon trot into the endzone on a razzle dazzle statue of liberty play! haha

  19. carwwest Says:

im not going to get my hopes up…yet….but everyone is making that hard for me….i have been let down too many times….

  20. imabulldog Says:

ok! What’s the word? Peterson or Tubs? And what about the Auburn wives?

  21. msualum01 Says:

Petersen or Tuberville? Either one is fine with me.

  22. gulfwaterdawg Says:

Hey skoalbandit you chew that stuff, dont sniff it. Delta State could not serve water in the SEC.

All my contacts are saying annoucement by Sunday, the deal has been made. And it aint OJ at least not for the next 5 to 18.

I think Peterson is a good fit.

  23. dawgface52 Says:

Here is on link to the rumor.

    http://spartyandfriends.com/2008/12/05/breaking-news-sources-confirm-chris-peterson-to-mississippi-st/

this rumor has hit many other sites also….could be legit….im really trying not to get my hopes up!!!

  25. omahadog Says:

The Auburn Asst. Coaches wives have been calling in to a sports talk radio show, slamming the integrity of the Auburn A.D., upset that their husbands had to hear through the media about Tuberville being let go. They are saying that if Tuberville had in fact resigned, he would have told his assistants. The A.D. is saying that it was Tuberville’s decision. Also, the wives are saying that Tuberville does things the right way, not like Saban, who “buys recruits”. There was a lot more said; all of it ugly.

Word out of Texas Tech: According to Graham Harrel (QB), Leach is on the move. Almost his words exactly. Didn’t say where though. Interesting that Leach turned down the Washington job, when it was announced that Auburn was open, don’t you think?

  26. jsaltillo Says:

The SEC cannot and will not tell MSU when it can announce it’s new head coach. Delaying it until Monday or Tuesday means they lose at least one day of valuable recruiting time (Coaches can’t recruit on Sundays).

  27. imabulldog Says:

    thanks for the info boys.

    I’d love to have Peterson

  28. omahadog Says:

Who said MSU is not continuing to recruit? Today is Friday. What major damage do you incur by waiting until after the SEC Championship game to announce the new coach, if in fact one has been hired? The staff should all be out recruiting anyway.

It may be a moot point, if Byrne hasn’t come to an agreement with anyone. We’ll see.

  29. marybethbulldoggirl Says:

    http://spartyandfriends.com/2008/12/05/breaking-news-sources-confirm-chris-peterson-to-mississippi-st/

Sparty and Friends says Peterson is our next coach. Have you heard anything Brad?

  30. bamamanreturns Says:

Petersen is a TERRIBLE fit for MSU, but it seems word is breaking out on the internets

    http://spartyandfriends.com/2008/12/05/breaking-news-sources-confirm-chris-peterson-to-mississippi-st/

Also, DSU would be a 2 TD favorite over MSU…

  31. 2thdoc Says:

If we announce Petersen’s name on ANY day next week, recruiting will take care of itself by the time February rolls around. Enjoy the weekend fellas…Greg “Chuck Norris” Byrne has it under control.

  32. lollipopkid Says:

Petersen would be awesome. Finally someone who thinks having an offense is important (and not just a necessary evil). I’m skeptical though. Too many times have I been burned by the Bulldogs.

  33. omahadog Says:

The same website that broke the story about Kiffin going to Tennessee, is reporting that Petersen is in negotiations with MSU. For what that’s worth.

  34. dawgface52 Says:

Finebaum just said Petersen thought seriously about it but said “no thanks”. Who knows….

  35. carwwest Says:

some guy just said it was true though….gah this is killing me!!!!!

  36. darkcooger Says:

I know it’s true ’cause I read it on the internet!

  37. goldendawg Says:

    OK Brad,
The Petersen rumor is everywhere. What do you know?

  38. Brad Locke Says:

I know about as much as y’all do. Not for lack of trying, though.

  39. maroon1white Says:

    Your killing me Smalls!

  40. gulfwaterdawg Says:

Im telling you all, the deal is done. We will have a new head coach on Monday.

  41. bulldognark82 Says:

we better hurry bc we just lost montez phillips to ole miss!!!!

  42. spaceghost1 Says:

phillips was never a solid commitment to begin with

  43. bulldognark82 Says:

thats true but they are all looking at offenses

  44. bmoy Says:

Oh, this is so much fun! Hopefully I can join on as Director of Football Operations.

  45. skydawg706 Says:

Well at least all the rumors (news papers) help Nutt get a pay raise and job extension.

Do have to admit it would have been something in OXford if Nutt did go to Auburn….
