Skip Holtz Résumé

by

The NFL Network has reported that East Carolina coach Skip Holtz, whose Pirates defeated Tulsa in the Conference USA title game Saturday, was hired as Syracuse’s head coach. This afternoon, The (Syracuse) Post-Standard quoted Skip’s dad, Lou Holtz, as saying that his son will meet with Cuse officials Monday but that he hasn’t taken the job. If he does take it, that’s one probable MSU candidate off the table.

So let’s take a closer look at Coach Holtz:

Current job: East Carolina head coach (since 2005)
Age: 44
Previous stops
• 2004: South Carolina assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach
• 1999-2003: South Carolina assistant head coach/offensive coordinator
• 1994-98: Connecticut head coach
• 1992-93: Notre Dame offensive coordinator
• 1990-91: Notre Dame receivers coach
• 1989: Colorado State receivers coach
• 1987-88: Florida State graduate assistant
Head coaching record: 67-44
Bowl record: 1-1
Conference titles: 2 (1998, 2008)
Honors: None
Does he fit at MSU? Holtz is young and has extensive offensive coordinator experience. He has strong SEC ties, of course, and ECU is a stepping-stone kind of program.

nice work, BL!!!! When do you sleep? You media types need to rest every now and then haha!!!

  2. Braves Dawg Says:

    Yo, Addddrrrrrriiiiiiiiaaaaaaaannnnnnnn!!!!!!!!

  3. boonhoggenbeck Says:

I guess that means that maybe Syracuse isn’t interested in Turner Gill, who allegedly was being interviewed. I’d take Derek Dooley over Gill in a heartbeat, because his resume is far more impressive. BTW, how can I change my avatar?

  4. imabulldog Says:

what’s it matter,” does he fit MSU ?”

    He ain’t coming

  5. carwwest Says:

is syracuse really a better job??….will they offer as much money as we can??….i have always said skip holtz should be a serious candidate but if it is between syracuse and us and he picks them, then i will officially start worrying about our future….

  6. Brad Locke Says:

Linked up the story. Sorry about that.

    Sleep? I haven’t had a good night’s sleep since I had kids.

  7. dawgface52 Says:

You can always put them up for adoption. 😉

  8. 2thdoc Says:

Alright Mr. Byrne, we get the point. You are in control of everything, you are a Jedi Master, and the father of Chuck Norris….but it is about time to go ahead and spill the beans.

  9. bulldogdug Says:

Guys, I’ve been reading your posts for the last week and as bad as I hate to say it, it looks like we are gonna end up with a second-rate coach yet again! Hopefully GB has a rabbit in the hat we don’t know about.

  10. gulfwaterdawg Says:

Not to stoke the fire or anything but there is scheduled press at Boise for 7pm their time. Maybe to comment on bowl bid maybe not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. carwwest Says:

no disrespect but why would he announce anything about us there??….im past the petersen thing and just hoping we can get a decent coach cause the longer we wait and the more i hear, the more worried i am getting…

**** Can Ole Miss hang with Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl not to change subject… We still need a COACH******

  15. darkcooger Says:

Indeed, carwwest. The press conference is their bowl announcement:

  16. redtoolman Says:

The Poinsettia Bowl has announced that No. 9 Boise State (12-0) will play No. 11 TCU (10-2) on Dec. 23 in San Diego.

So, if it turns out to really be Petersen we might not know for awhile. Just sayin….

  17. bulldogdug Says:

I have been to Idaho several times and cannot see why anyone would choose it over anywhere. Why would you want to stay at a school where you go undefeated and only play in the Poinsettia Bowl? He must not have great ambition so maybe he wouldn’t be the right choice anyway. I’m ready for us to be a winner!

  18. Jimmy Barbee Says:

“**** Can Ole Miss hang with Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl not to change subject… We still need a COACH******”.

Yep!! I think that Ole Miss can hang in with Texas Tech.

  19. darkcooger Says:

Man, I hope Texas Tech rips Ole Miss to pieces.

  20. gulfwaterdawg Says:

I hope all SEC schools do well in their bowl games. Ole Wish’s defense should be more than Tech can handle. Its good to have rivalary but it is better for the State of Mississippi if they do well.

  21. bulldognark82 Says:

man gulf, i was hoping to hear something by now!!

  22. darkcooger Says:

I’ve heard that all my life and I’m sure it’s true (though the state of Mississippi doesn’t play into it; it’s better for the SEC and all member schools), but that doesn’t mean I’ll be cheering for Ole Miss. Maybe if they hadn’t crushed us so thoroughly, I’d be able to half heartedly hope they win, but as it is, I want them destroyed.

I’m pulling for all the other SEC teams, though.

  23. corinthdawg Says:

Honestly, MSU is not a good fit for Holtz. I know that may not sound good coming from a State fan, but I am realistic. I’d say Brady Hoke is a better fit for us. Consider his resume:

    Year Position School
    1981-82 OL, LB Yorktown H.S.
1983 Defensive Line Grand Valley State
1984-86 DL, Special Teams Western Michigan
    1987-88 Outside Linebackers Toledo
    1989 Defensive Line Oregon State
    1990 Inside Linebackers Oregon State
    1991-94 Defensive Line Oregon State
    1995-96 Defensive Ends Michigan
    1997-2001 Defensive Line Michigan
2002 Associate Head Coach/Defensive Line Michigan

The only drawback about going after him is that he is at his alma matter.

  24. bulldognark82 Says:

i def, want all the sec schools to do well, im tired of hearing about how good the big 12 is this year and how they “might have de-throned the sec”. i hope florida crushes oklahoma and flex that all powerful sec muscle!

  25. corinthdawg Says:

Football is football, and right now, I think the Big 12 dwarfs the SEC from top to bottom. The SEC has Florida and Auburn………..then falls drastically. The Big 12 – OK, TX, TT, Mizzou, Kansas, OK State. Say what you want, this year I’ve really enjoyed watching Big 12 football. It’s a lot better than watching a 3-2 game between Auburn and State.

  26. corinthdawg Says:

Sorry, the SEC has Florida and Alabama, not Auburn. Guess I had Auburn on the mind from watching the coaching search on ESPN.

  27. corinthdawg Says:

    Brad,

Why aren’t we hearing of Gary Crowton. Here is his resume:

    Playing Experience
    1976-77 Snow College (quarterback)
1978 Colorado State (quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back)

    Coaching Experience
    1982 BYU (student assistant)
1983-86 Snow Junior College (secondary, 1983; offensive coordinator, 1984-86)
1987 Western Illinois (passing game coordinator)
    1988-90 New Hampshire (offensive coordinator)
    1991-93 Boston College (quarterbacks)
    1994 Georgia Tech (co-offensive coordinator)
1995-98 Louisiana Tech (offensive coordinator, 1995; head coach, 1996-98)
    1999-2000 Chicago Bears (offensive coordinator)
    2001-04 BYU (head coach)
    2005-06 Oregon (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks)
    2007 LSU (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks)

    Bowl Experience

    As a coach
1982 Holiday Bowl (BYU lost to Ohio State, 41-17)
1992 Hall of Fame Bowl (Boston College lost to Tennessee, 28-23)
1993 Carquest Bowl (Boston College def. Virginia, 31-13)
2001 Liberty Bowl (BYU lost to Louisville, 28-10)
2005 Holiday Bowl (Oregon lost to Oklahoma, 17-14)
2006 Las Vegas Bowl (Oregon lost to BYU, 38-8)
2008 BCS National Championship Game (LSU def. Ohio State, 38-24)

  28. corinthdawg Says:

By the way, Crowton was the coach at BYU in 2001, when they came to Starkville and rung one up on us.

LSU players call him “The Wizard.”

  29. goldendawg Says:

I am pulling for the SEC to go 6-2 in the bowl games. I never pull for Mississippi or Alabama. NEVER!

  30. spaceghost1 Says:

Chris Petersen is being interviewed on ESPN right now about his upcoming bowl game. Sounds like he’s not going anywhere. Bummer.

  31. carwwest Says:

yeah i just watched that spaceghost, there is no way he is coming to state…oh well on to…..SOMEBODY!!!

  32. spaceghost1 Says:

gulfwater, since Petersen is now out, who is it gonna be? None of the other names (Graham, Gill, Wilson, Dooley) excite me. Is it Tuberville?

  33. farley662 Says:

I’m afraid GB might have went all in with CP and now he is in scramble mode.

  34. corinthdawg Says:

I’m scratching my head wondering why not Crowton @ LSU?

  35. corinthdawg Says:

Farley, I agree with that. I think GB might be in “Oh Crap” mode.

  36. spaceghost1 Says:

Sounds like Petersen is happy about going to the Poinsettia bowl at 12-0 and making $1M vs $2.5M. Boise must be a helluva place to live. Do the women walk around topless up there or what?
I gotta believe GB has a plan B, but there’s not much else out there to get. I hope he’s not gonna pay any of the other candidates $2.5M/yr.

  37. corinthdawg Says:

I think “Plan B” is Dooley.

  38. darkcooger Says:

I’m concerned that “Plan B” is “suck for four more years.”

  39. spaceghost1 Says:

If Plan B is Dooley, then I will have lost all faith in GB.

  40. corinthdawg Says:

We’re seeing the true perception of MSU outside of the SEC dominated south.

  41. corinthdawg Says:

We could do worse than Dooley. What are MSU’s selling points?

  42. darkcooger Says:

I wouldn’t go that far, spaceghost. He’s in a bad spot, all things considered. I’m less worried that he’s going to make a poor choice than that he won’t have any choice but to hire a bad coach.

I kind of half expect an announcement of someone we’ve never heard of, who turns out to be a great choice who can lead us to victories and championships. But I also tend to be optimistic, so my expectations are skewed. 🙂

  43. corinthdawg Says:

I’m kind of impressed that there aren’t as many coaches just taking the cash right now. I guess they have their standards.

  44. bleedmaroon Says:

Hey Brad, tell me your opinion, since the search has drug on for 8 full days now, is MSU in trouble or do you think GB has his coach already?

  45. thespear Says:

Dont think anyone has mentioned it on here so i will post the link:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3753319

this espn article says that Urban Meyer say Dan Mullen has talked with State about the coaching position! I like the thought!!!!

  46. spaceghost1 Says:

What do you mean they have their standards, corinth? State isn’t that bad. If we have as much $ as I’m hearing we have, we need to push for a top notch candidate. I’m glad GB was smart enough to go after CP, but the sad thing is there’s not much else out there. Dooley isn’t the splash we need, but unfortunately, we may have to settle for him or someone like him and the mediocrity will continue. Meanwhile, the rest of the SEC will increase their lead on us and we’ll never be able to catch up and compete. That’s why this hire is so crucial.

  47. thespear Says:

well since my comment with the link is awaiting moderation, go check out the espn article that has Meyer saying State has spoke with Dan Mullen, he would be a great hire!!!!

  48. bleedmaroon Says:

I just read that article. Mullen would be a good hire, the bad thing is the timing. would he coach UF in the Nat Champ and our recruting go untouched till Jan or does he come on in and get to work?

  49. redtoolman Says:

As long as we could go ahead and announce it, it would do wonders for recruiting with all of the national exposure leading up to the game.

  50. thespear Says:

I agree redtoolman. it sure would make floridas visit to starkville next year that much more exciting

  51. carwwest Says:

i think mullen or wilson would be fine hires and people on other sites are already claiming wilson is the guy but there is a hang up about when he is coming bc of the NC and recruiting….i think if either one is the guy and if they want to stay until the national championship is over, it would be stupid to think they couldnt talk to recruits over the phone and the recruits would actually like the fact that their future coach is coaching in the NC….

yeah i would like for them to be here as soon as possible but a lot of people can pull both duties….sarkisan is going to do it, pelini did it, the list goes on….

this is assuming one of these is the guy….i would be happy with either but would prefer wilson just because he has been in the BCS level longer….

  52. dawgface52 Says:

I like Wilson but Mullen has been with Meyer all the way back to Bowling Green. That’s a lot of good tutelage from one of the great coaches right now. I hope we can land one of the 2.

  53. carwwest Says:

meyer said he doesnt think mullen is a finalist for our job….i dont know how to take that….maybe he turned us down, maybe he thinks we are looking at someone else, or maybe he has no clue….im ready for this to be over….

  54. bigcowbell Says:

Has anybody heard that there is a coach search update scheduled for tomorrow on campus?

  55. carwwest Says:

nope, havent heard that one….but i doubt it though because byrne said he wasnt talking to anyone until we have a new coach….

  56. imabulldog Says:

I’m not making anymore predictions, besides we just ‘get up’ to be let down.

Still wish Tubbs was a possibilty, but I do trust GB to make a good choice, after all, all he’s done is listen to the fans since he’s been here and I can’t see him disappointing us or himself

  57. imabulldog Says:

Hey Car, man have we had some bloggers come outta da woodwork during this search?!? Hadnt seen half these names before.

    Glad y’all are here tho

  58. carwwest Says:

yeah tell me about ima, i like the influx of new people though….but i have no doubt byrne is trying to get us the best but the question is will that person come to state….the longer the wait, the more skeptical i get, i always have been a realist and honestly i think the worst we can do is bowden which is a huge step up from croom….

  59. imabulldog Says:

    very true, instant Upgrade 🙂

I worry too, about how long the clock continues to tick

  60. gulfwaterdawg Says:

Sorry guys your guess is as good as mine. The alumni friend(skybox owner) that I get my info from is at a loss. Who knows what happens now, but something news to we are losing recruits. I think Mullen would be good, Dooley does not excite the alumni, Tuberville would be OK if we as Bulldogs can get past the River Boat gambling game(I was there and that could prove tough), Holtz aint coming(he sees Notre Dame(after Cuse) in his future).

  61. gulfwaterdawg Says:

Sorry guys dont type so good in the early AM. EDITED: Something needs to happen so we stop losing interested recruits.

  62. bantyrooster1 Says:

I hope Dooley will be offered the job this week.

  63. desotodawg Says:

ESPN has an article on Florida coordinators getting interest and mentions MSU looking at OC Mullen.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=ncf&id=3753287

  64. carwwest Says:

dooley put us down….he said he would have to recruit mainly out of the JUCO ranks to be successful at msu and he said he doesnt want to do that in his career….so forget dooley, i dont want him here….
