Ellis Johnson Returns?

UPDATE: New story by The State, saying Johnson has expressed interest in the MSU job but has not had any formal discussions.

Here’s something worth discussing. The State (Columbia, S.C.) is reporting that former MSU defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, now at South Carolina, has been contacted by State for the head coaching position. I have left a message for Johnson with one of SC’s media relations guy, who seemed perplexed and said, “I thought y’all were looking for an offensive guy.”

Holy Search Going to Hell Batman!

The fear that this search would turn into a charlie foxtrot appears to be more and more justified.

What’s next? Rumors that we’re talking to Ed Orgeron? Coonassku

Exactly…. That’s the last person that we need as our head football coach…

I want a rumor that we’re actually talking to Batman. This is getting absurd. I’m still holding out hope that we’ve already snagged one of those great coaches and we just can’t say anything about it right now, but these rumors sounds more desperate every day.

What about high school coaches? I mean, seriously, when are we going to hear rumors about that? My confidence in Greg Byrne’s magical ability to get the best to MSU is starting to waver, but mostly just because I’d gotten too hopeful that we’d have a name by now. It doesn’t help that plenty of people have made it perfectly clear that Mississippi State is a very unattractive coaching position. I’d have guessed many coaches would consider it a challenge worth at least attempting, but I’ve guessed wrong before.

I’m curious which accomplishment a coach would be more proud of: winning at a school with a history and tradition of winning, or winning at a school with a history and tradition of losing. The latter certainly seems like the greater achievement to me.

What better way to spark our offense than to hire our old defensive coordinator as head coach? He IS however a great DEFENSIVE coordinator.

Please GB get this over with!! and don’t hire Johnson as the HC.

Here’s just a thought about Ellis Johnson. Maybe he was contacted about returning to be Defensive Coord. Who says that he was contacted about the Head Coaching job? It could be that Byrne and the newly hired H.C., are working on the staff now. Too far fetched? Maybe…..maybe not. It wouldn’t be unheard of. Besides, I heard that E.J. only left MSU, because of some internal rift. It did some strange that first he goes to Ark., then to South Carolina, didn’t it. He was trying to get out of Dodge, and it didn’t matter where to. I know he’s from S.C., but Ark isn’t anywhere near S.C. Just a thought.

Either the search or the rumors have gone to he!! in a handbag.. Johnson is he young and entergeric .. I believe the answer would be no. I would not call that moving forward when you bring someone back. We need someone who is excited about the future.

Let the rumors fly – good distraction for AD – feel maybe AD is waiting until bowl games are over to make announcement.

Looking at Croom’s radio comments – could be new HC was in the working earlier before egg bowl disgrace. Feel Croom could have made the move about Woody earlier in the season maybe about hiring a new OC (Al Borges) – may or may not have not made a difference.

I like Flordia’s offensive coordinator, impressive resume.

Would like to see Johnson back as defense coordinator.

We could be getting a coach from the west coast – Utah.

Skydawg I feel the same way I don’t look for an announcement until after Dec. 23 ……

if we wait till the 23rd we will lose a ton of quailty recruits…

Mr. Johnson can keep his butt in SC.

  15. shuffle02 Says:

Ellis did well as DC (actually VERY well. Think of the talent he started with.) As HC he wouldn’t be in direct supervision of the offense. That’s the OC’s job. A nice offense is great and all, but it takes a great defense to win championships (bowl bids, Western division champs, etc…)
    I’d be ok with Ellis.

dont look now but wxxdy is effing us from beyond the coaching grave….he tipped off spurrier about russell and now russell is looking at them and saying he is “open but still committed”…..spurrier said they are taking one QB this year and “indicated russell was that guy”…..we need a coach soon!!!

  17. farley662 Says:

I thought Woody went to Clemson?

  18. maroondog Says:

My sources tell me that ColoradoReb actually tipped off Spurrier. It’s his master goal to announce that Russell is heading to South Carolina before everyone else knows and make everyone on PA’s bow down to worship his greatness.

  19. farley662 Says:

Did that jackass really just say “an” is only used in the plural sense of words?

  20. carwwest Says:

wxxdy did go to clemson but was supposed to have a job at south carolina…i wreckon he tipped him off in that little window….i just hope he stays….
