Rick Stansbury Says …

MSU basketball coach Rick Stansbury addressed the assembled media at Humphrey Coliseum just moments ago. His Bulldogs (6-2) are coming off a 76-67 win over Alabama State and will host Charlotte at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Some excerpts from today’s chat:

• On Saturday’s performance: “We’ll have to play much better Wednesday night than we played Saturday night to beat Charlotte.”

• On freshman PG Dee Bost: “I think biggest challenge we have for him, he’s got to continue to find ways to keep those point guards out of the lane. He’s got to get better in that area, but he will.”

• On toughness: “We’ve got to be able to take toughness and utilize it better by defending and getting rebounds.”

• On senior F/C Brian Johnson, who’s been out nearly four weeks with a foot/ankle injury: “Hopefully he’s getting back closer to getting ready.” His status for Wednesday is unclear.

• On junior F/C Jarvis Varnado, who scored a career-high 22 points Saturday: “He’s probably just doing things he’s capable of doing. I don’t think you’ve really consistently seen all he can do offensively, because we haven’t consistently gotten it to him enough.”

• On sophomore F Kodi Augustus, who had just four points, one rebound Saturday: “Saturday night he had one of those moments, and he just totally had a lapse mentally in basically everything he was doing.”
