Hoops: Charlotte 70, MSU 64

Charlotte (3-6) came to The Hump and beat MSU (6-3), and it was much worse than the final indicates. State trailed 36-20 at halftime thanks in large part to a scoring drought that covered 7 minutes, 24 seconds. The Bulldogs were down by 22 at the 7:14 mark of the second half.

Dee Bost led MSU with 15 points. Lamont Mack paced Charlotte with 19.

Some quotes, first from coach Rick Stansbury:

• “I don’t think I’ve ever been a part of a game where I felt like our team played with the least amount of toughness, the least amount of grit in  my 11 years. They hit us in the mouth the first possession, we never recovered.”

• “I have no answers why we played like we did. Give Charlotte some credit, Charlotte’s a very good basketball team.”

• “We played like what we are. That’s not acceptable. We’ll find a way to peel that skin and find a core, that’s what I’ll do.”

• “We’re very young, very soft. Soft. Lack of toughness. Lack of toughness offensively, lack of toughness defensively.”

Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz:

• “That’s the team for 35 minutes that we thought at the beginning of the year we could be. I know we’re much better than our record, and I think we showed it tonight.”

MSU C/F Jarvis Varnado:

• “We’ve just got to toughen up, everybody on this team.”

MSU PG Dee Bost:

• “We’ve got to come out the beginning of the game and jump on them instead of letting them jump on us.”
