New Week, New Focus

Not to say that football isn’t on the front burner, but as most ovens come with two of them, basketball has been moved up alongside. With Dan Mullen putting together a coaching staff, there is the daily expectation of news on that front. We had it confirmed yesterday that Mark Hudspeth was hired to be in charge of MSU’s passing game. Mullen, by the way, was in town Sunday but will be on the road starting today as he works to keep the 2009 commitment class together.

Now, however, we can turn our attention more toward the hardwood. The MSU men are 7-3 and are preparing for the Big East/SEC Invitational, where the Bulldogs will play Cincinnati at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, to be televised by ESPN2. They’ll likely be without junior shooting guard Barry Stewart, who sprained his non-shooting wrist in Saturday’s win over South Alabama. We’ll catch up with coach Rick Stansbury tomorrow to get his thoughts on lineup adjustments.

And how about them Lady Bulldogs? They improved to 7-0 with a win over Memphis on Sunday. They return to action Tuesday night with a trip to Southern Miss (7 p.m.).

What is the deal with the ladies? I don’t really follow men’s ball, much less the ladies, but they are absolutely dominating people. Have they played anyone, I know La Tech used to be a powerhouse at one time. Did we sign some all-world player or something? Why the sudden rise?

As far as the guys are concerned, we need some folks to grow up in a hurry. I think we have some talent, it just needs to get on the same page.

FYI: Stans is in the Tupelo hospital.
