Stansbury Remains in Hospital; Tests Normal

MSU basketball coach Rick Stansbury will spend tonight in the hospital in Tupelo. Tests today came back normal, but he had a spinal tap as well (yikes). Anyway, here is the official release in its entirety:

Mississippi State men’s basketball coach Rick Stansbury will spend a second night in the hospital due to severe migraines and flu-like symptoms.

On Sunday night, he was admitted to the Oktibbeha County Hospital after complaining of headaches, and on Monday morning, the 11th-year coach was transported to the Northeast Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo for further tests.

According to his wife, Meo Stansbury, both the MRI and CT Scan came back normal. He also underwent a spinal tap, but the results won’t be available until Tuesday morning.

“Everything has been normal so far, and that’s good,” Meo Stansbury said. “Hopefully, it’s just a viral or bacterial infection. We’re just asking for everyone’s continued prayers. He’s in good spirits and is ready to get back to his team.”

In his absence, associate head coach Robert Kirby has assumed the day-to-day operations of the team. It’s not known if the 48-year-old Stansbury, the school’s all-time winningest coach with 215 victories, will accompany his squad on its flight Wednesday to Cincinnati for Thursday’s 5:30 p.m. ESPN2 showdown against the Bearcats.

“Our team has remained focused, and they worked very hard in practice today in his absence,” Kirby said. “Everyone is looking forward to him getting back. We expect him to be in Cincinnati on Thursday.”

It’s good news that the tests came back negative. Hope the results of the spinal tap are the same. Our prayers still go with him and his family. Get well soon coach and don’t be in too big a hurry to coach the next game. Make sure you are well first.
