Various & Sundry Bulldog Items

by

Been kind of a newsy day out of Starkville.

Dan Mullen got himself another assistant coach, bringing along John Hevesy from Florida. He coached tight ends for the Gators and was with Urban Meyer for eight years. “Great coach, great friend, great person, great father, great husband,” Meyer told the Orlando Sentinel.

• You already know that hoopster Dee Bost was named SEC Freshman of the Week. “I wasn’t even thinking about getting the award, I was just going out there to play so we could win,” Bost said. I will have a story on Bost in Wednesday’s paper, Lord willing.

• Basketball coach Rick Stansbury‘s radio show, “Dawgs Talk With Rick Stansbury,” makes its season debut tonight. The show, which starts at 6 p.m., is hosted by Jim Ellis. The numbers to call: 888-808-8637; if in Jackson, (601) 952-0986; or if you have a Cellular South phone, *222.

• Stansbury and a handful of players met with the media this afternoon. The Bulldogs (11-5, 1-0) host Alabama (11-4, 1-0) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Bama’s Ronald Steele is day-to-day with a heel injury, so he might not even play. More can be found here.

MSU, of course, is coming off that shocking win at Arkansas. Now comes the really hard part – keeping these young guys focused. That job falls to juniors Barry Stewart and Jarvis Varnado. “The Arkansas win was a big win for us, but we keep in mind we’ve got long way to go,” said Varnado. “This SEC season is game by game – you can’t get too high, you can’t get too low. You’ve just got to stay at a consistent level.”

Good to hear that maturity from JV. We’re gonna need that level headed approach when we have a shooting night like arky had saturday. It will come at some point and could get real ugly.
