Mullen at The Hump: On Recruits, Coaches

by

New MSU football coach Dan Mullen and his assistants came to midcourt during halftime of the basketball game tonight, to a rousing welcome, of course. Of Carl Torbush, a veteran defensive coordinator, Mullen told the crowd, “Top defensive coordinator, I think, out there.”

Mullen then chatted briefly with the media. The highlights:

• On this recruiting visit this weekend:
“Our guys are really working hard, and our players are doing a good job of hosting. We’ll find out on Feb. 4 (signing day) how it all goes.”

• On RB coach/recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson’s departure:
“It’s always tough, but that’s kind of part of the business. He thought it was a good opportunity for he and his family.”

• On how Wilson’s departure affected recruiting:
“He was our assistant coach involved in it, but Rockey Felker is working right now, he’s been here forever, so he knows all that stuff that’s going on, and obviously Ryan Holleran is our director of recruiting operations. I think our staff’s not really missed a beat this whole weekend.”

• On finalizing coaching staff/roles:
“In my mind we’re pretty close, but for me our whole focus right now is all recruiting. We just need to wrap that up. After signing day, we’ll take care of all the recruits, and then we’ll get exactly what positions, because right now coaches anyway are 24 hours a day recruiting.”

• On this week’s tour of the region:
“It was much better than we even expected. I think the turnout was almost double what we were expecting going in at every single stop along the way. I couldn’t be happier with all the support we’ve seen from everybody around the state.”

Seems as though coach Mullen has everybody fired up….. I hope that translates into a packed stadium of LOUD, excited, loyal till the end fans.

    3-0 in the SEC. Got Bumphis, Thames, and Perkins. I’m happier than a tick on a tampon right now. (I know that’s sick, but first analogy that came to mind}

Eric, that is nasty. but that does sound like a happy tick, and I am right there with you.

LOL Eric. Best line I’ve heard in awhile. The crowd got pumped for Mullen tonight. When the recruits came thru the crowd gave them a standing ovation. Don’t know if they showed that on tv or not. Baseball got a nice ovation too. The new president spoke for awhile also.

They did show Mullen don’t know about the recruits. Mullen talked at halftime. Got it on DVR can’t remember what He said after hearing about Bumphis and the others.

Yeah, you could actually see Mullen sitting with the players at one point.

Great day for the Dawgs, top of the SEC west, 3 great recruits- which makes us #17 in the country at this point, I can’t be happier. Its pretty nice when you look at the company we are in and even the teams we are above as well. Of course that all has to translate to the field for it to mean anything-but I think it will. Give Mullen time and he will “bring it”.

And as for Eric, we feel the exact way…but maybe with cleaner metaphors 🙂

Phantom, they are just being themselves. After a century and a heritage of “jerk-hood” you thought they’d have realized thats why no one likes em’.

Except for JB and OxfordReb and Nate, the rest I don’t like.

I know we have our share as well, but not quite as many 🙂
