Blog Bag Answers Aplenty

by

Y’all filled this week’s Blog Bag to overflowing, and I did my darndest to provide satisfatory answers. Can’t say I hit 1.000 on that, but some questions will be more precisely answered in time. On with it:

Q: Any update on the indoor basketball practice facility?
A: Athletics director Greg Byrne: “We’re making progress. The goal is still to try to get it going after the season. But like many others, we’ve felt the impact of the economy.”

Q: Any update on the expansion of Humphrey Coliseum, Dudy Noble Field or Davis Wade Stadium?
A: Byrne: “Right now we’re trying to finalize a master plan for all of our facilities.”

Q: What are the chances of the Dudy Noble bleacher stands all being made chairbacks?
A: Byrne said if that happens, it’ll be worked out in the aforementioned “master plan.”

Q: Is there any chance new president Mark Keenum puts a stop to this crazy logo change?
A: Logos are all set. If you haven’t seen them yet, here they are: mississippistate-logo-usage3.

Q: Have you had the chance to interview Dr. Keenum on his take on all that has happened in the athletics department?
A: Not yet, but I want to soon. He’s so busy, though, our news editor hasn’t even been able to secure an interview with him yet.

Q: How are things with baseball coach John Cohen and the team? I’ve seen them practice a little this winter.
A: I haven’t spoken with Cohen lately, but I’m going to try to catch up with him next week.

Q: What is the word on the pitching rotation and starting lineup for the baseball team?
A: I’ll let you know what I find out when I talk to Cohen.

Q: What was that video that was playing on the MooTron before the Vandy game?
A: Didn’t see it. Something for the recruits, I heard.

Q: When are they gonna schedule alternative uses of the new video board (movies, etc.)?
A: Byrne said that hasn’t found its way up the priority list yet, so nothing to report.

Q: Who do you think would just complete the puzzle for us in football?
A: One word: Quarterback. And an offensive line. And a pass rush. And speedy wideouts. And a reliable kicker. Dude, there are lots of issues.

Q: When will we ever see Mississippi State with a winning football team?
A: If you’ve seen me try to predict games, you’ll know my opinion on that is worthless, so I won’t bother.

Q: I keep hearing football coach Dan Mullen is expected to pull out one or two more key recruits before signing day. Who’s left that has State on their list? We’re at 23 commits, how many more can we sign?
A: State can sign 25 this year. I don’t know who Mullen is looking at most closely – he obviously can’t tell us – but we might can draw clues from a by-position breakdown of current commitments (star ratings from Rivals.com):
• QB: Tyler Russell, Meridian HS (4 stars)
• RB: Darius Slay, Brunswick, Ga., HS (2 stars); LaDarius Perkins, St. Joseph HS (3 stars); Montrell Conner, Ouachita Parish, La., HS (4 stars); William Shumpert, Itawamba AHS (3 stars)
• WR: Chad Bumphis, Tupelo HS (4 stars); Leon Berry, East Miss. CC (3 stars); Maurice Langston, East Central Miss. CC (4 stars); Chris Smith, Meridian HS (3 stars)
• OL: Gabriel Jackson, Amite Co. HS (3 stars); Sam Watts, Salem HS (Conyers, Ga., 3 stars)
• DE: Pernell McPhee, Itawamba CC (4 stars); Johnathan McKenzie, Starkville Aca. (2 stars); Fletcher Cox, Yazoo City HS (4 stars)
• DT: Josh Boyd, Philadelphia HS (4 stars)
• LB: Chris White, Miss. Gulf Coast CC (4 stars); Deontae Skinner, Noxubee Co. HS (3 stars)
• DB: Dennis Thames, Louisville HS (3 stars); Nickoe Whitley, Provine HS (3 stars); Johnthan Banks, East Webster HS (3 stars); Cameron Lawrence, Magnolia Heights HS (3 stars)
K: Sean Brauchle, Miss. Gulf Coast CC (3 stars)
P: Heath Hutchins, Itawamba CC (3 stars)

Q: Are there any more offensive linemen in our sights for the few remaining scholarships?
A: At least a couple of linemen have been offered by State but haven’t committed: Olive Branch’s Aubrey Phillips, who according to Scout.com has given Tennessee a soft verbal; and Randall Fowler of Banneker (College Park, Ga.). It would make sense to get a couple more linemen.

Q: Any word on Pat Patterson (Noxubee County WR) coming to MSU?
A: Nothing solid, but a story I linked up in my previous post has a Rivals.com dude saying he thinks Patterson is coming to Starkville.

Q: How do coaches decide how many scholarships to offer above the limit?
A: I’ll ask Dan that question whenever I can get him on the phone.

Q: What coaches did Mullen keep from Sylvester Croom’s staff?
A: Rockey Felker, Melvin Smith, Reed Stringer and David Turner.

Q: When are you going to change the header on this blog page?
A: When somebody makes me one. I got no Photoshop skills.

Q: What is the meaning of life?
A: Cashews.

Q: Twenty wins in basketball used to be a lock for the NCAA Tournament. Still so? If not, how many, and do you see MSU getting there?
A: MSU is 13-6 (3-1 in SEC) with 12 games left, plus the SEC tourney. I’d say at least – at least – eight more wins plus a strong tourney run. Winning the West sure wouldn’t hurt.

Q: I heard that Leo Seal Jr. left the athletic department a sizable gift when he passed away in November. When will this gift be announced, and what are the plans for the donation?
A: I’ll go with imabulldog’s answer: “Think it’s private, and by that I mean assigned to cover expenses concerning the coaching staff and changes needed. I may be wrong, though.” I’ve heard nothing on an announcement.

Q: Any chance that the club hockey team gets more support, or is this a dead issue due to Title IX?
A: Byrne said that the foreseeable future holds no change in the team’s club status.

Now that’s a recruiting class right there Ole Miss. Add Patterson and the spread will be stocked full young speedy talent. Then we have running backs out of the back of our asses. That I like because we can still pound that rock. We’ll be USC South. Lol

  3. mississippipitbull Says:

BL get one of your many fans to hookyou up man. How about two the bulldogs like mine on both sides and the new “M” in the middle. Somebody put my guy in there.

  4. dadwithpride Says:

Sounds like we can forget Patterson. He just said he was only looking at UT UA UM AND USM. This was on a local TV interview. see whole interview at WTOK.com.

  5. mississippipitbull Says:

Word? I bet he still doesn’t go to OM. That bastard.

    Are you high pitbull?

  9. mississippipitbull Says:

Maybe, maybe not. Its last year’s recruits. Some of them red shirted.

A: One word: Quarterback. And an offensive line. And a pass rush. And speedy wideouts. And a reliable kicker. Dude, there are lots of issues.

QB = Tyler Russell (2008: Completed 68-percent of his passes for over 3,000 yards, 39 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Mississippi ESPN Rise Gatorade Football Player of the Year)
    Offensive Line (I totally agree);
    Pass rush = Pernell McFee (All-American @ Itawamba with 17 sacks this year) & Fletcher Cox;
    Speedy wideouts = Maurice Langston, Leon Berry, & Chad Bumpis;
Reliable Kicker = Sean Brauchle (All-American place kicker @ MS Gulf Coast CC) & Heath Hutchins (All-American punter @ Itawamba averaging 46.1 yards per punt)

Hopefully these guys will be who we’re recruiting them to be. It’ll be interesting to see just how much of an impact they have this year. Check out the ESPN article below.

Good question pitbull. I think Delmon Robinson has the potential to very explosive under the Offensense that Mullen wants to implement. He showed some spark and toughness last year. He’s really the only one of these guys that got any substantial play time. The only thing that worries me about him is his size.

  12. buzzardroostus Says:

By the way guys, when you look at last year’s recruits and this years we have at least 5 potential big time players. It really won’t hurt my feelings at all if Patterson doesn’t come to State. I’m beginning to get the feeling that he has an attitude problem. If you remember he decommitted after the Auburn game. Well before Croom was gone.

  13. benzadawgfan Says:

B-rad, Leave that Justin Pigott pic up there. I can remember pitching him wiffle balls when he was in diapers! Good fella, always proud to have a friend wear the maroon & white and represent us so well on & off the field. Kinda makes me feel old though.

  14. mississippipitbull Says:

Naw by now all of bulldog nation has let his ass go. Patterson’s a back stabber. Going to OM? Man now that is dirty. I bet he really feels stupid if he left to be in a spread. He should’ve given it more time instead of bolting after a loss like that. Damn. Well we Bump, Perkins, and Thames in one shot who’s coming to town next week. More MSU commits I know.

  15. mississippipitbull Says:

BL do you think you could get in contact with Croom to ask him a couple of Q’s about his situation? You know check on him? He should be our main recruitor. Or ask Mullen a couple about the team and if its an open comp for QB.

  16. benzadawgfan Says:

MSpitbull, U gotta be high! Coach Croom had done a good job getting this class started, but this was the first class he’s had that was anything to get excited about. Mullen has taken Croom’s good class, firmed it up, and added talent to make it a great one!

  17. mississippipitbull Says:

What’s up with all this high crap? The man started everything we got going right now. So what’s to hate on him about? We supposed to be crediting the man. You sound like a OM fan. Give the man a little of cred he did his best that he could. So what if I’m high so what?

  18. benzadawgfan Says:

Pit, Chill dude, I made the high comment because somebody else had already. I don’t hate Croom, I have actually taken flak for defending his character. I think he is a good man, but to say we should hire him as recruiting coordinator is a little silly. Teams don’t generallly force a resignation, buy out a $3 million contract, and then offer the guy another job. I think he did a good job getting our team disciplined. The talent level however was not what it should have been. We never should have had to worry in a game with a 1 AA team, and most of the games against Middle Tn, Tulane, La Tech etc should have been blowouts. We had talent on par with the CUSA type conferences, not SEC. As for the high stuff, I puffed on the herb back in the day. Just don’t wind up like some of my friends who never quit, and are in their mid-thirties and the highlight of their life is the cartoon network!

  19. benzadawgfan Says:

I kinda don’t get the OM fan comment, nor hating on Croom. I said he had done a good job getting the class started. If that is hatin’m I don’t know what you’d call the stuff others have said about him.

  20. mississippipitbull Says:

Lol! I mean I’m parshal to sports shows and video games. Lol! I thought 30 was the new 20 or something like that? You’re right, Croom didn’t have the all coach attributes we were looking for but set us for the present era. He said that himself remember? You’re right about the money thng too.

  21. mississippipitbull Says:

Benza that might have been a high moment.

  22. benzadawgfan Says:

We’ve all had ’em. Be glad that they are chemically induced and not all natural and unavoidable!

  23. mississippipitbull Says:

    LOL!!

  24. mississippipitbull Says:

When do the new logos on merchandise go on sale, BL? I need some gear and some tickets for I can see all Ws coming up.

  25. Braves Dawg Says:

    and pink elephants.

  26. mississippipitbull Says:

Do I since a hater in the house of dog. Thats the new page name house of dog. Get your rebel loving ass outa here. GO DOGS!!!

  27. Braves Dawg Says:

Are you one of the rehabiltated dogs from Vick’s farm? Did you get shocked too much? I’m truely sorry.

Now go get your diaper changed.

  28. mississippipitbull Says:

Boo bad joke. I guess there is State hater. I know my bulldog balls hang low but I need you on them. You’re the one that needs the diaper the OM’s in your ass.

  29. mississippipitbull Says:

    Lame.

  30. Braves Dawg Says:

As soon as they drop pit, you should probably want to find a female to get on those. I’m sure it will be a struggle, but I hear Memphis has some that take even the ones who have to have a $100 bill hanging out of their zipper.

if you can pry yourself away from the goats that is.
