Ole Miss at MSU: Official Game Thread

by

I’m sitting next to fellow Journalite Parrish Alford, who’s also blogging on the game, FYI. Just minutes from tipoff, and I’m interested to see how these teams respond to what occurred the past week. Ole Miss, of course, upset Kentucky on Tuesday. Letdown time? MSU hasn’t played since beating Georgia a week ago, so the Bulldogs will be either rusty or refreshed.

Anyway, here is the pregame capsule.

TV: Raycom. Live Internet streaming at ESPN360.com.
XM: Channel 199.
Series: MSU leads 133-104.
Last year: MSU, 88-68 in Starkville; Ole Miss, 74-63 in Oxford.
Coaches: Ole Miss – Andy Kennedy (77-46, fourth year; 56-44, third year at Ole Miss). MSU – Rick Stansbury (222-121, 11th year).
Notes: The Rebels’ last win in Starkville was Feb. 21, 1998. Keith Carter, now a radio analyst with the Ole Miss network, had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead an 82-78 victory. … Rebel freshman Terrico White is averaging 14.7 points in SEC games, second on the team and 11th in the league. … David Huertas is averaging 19.6 points. If he maintains that pace he finish as the highest-scoring Ole Miss player since Joe Harvell’s 25.0 points per game in 1992. … MSU freshman Dee Bost is third in the SEC with 4.5 assists per game. … Junior center Jarvis Varnado continues to lead the nation with 4.9 blocks per game.

Tip time. David Huertas has kind of been playing to the crowd.

  2. farley662 Says:

    Go to hell Ole Miss!!!!!!!!

  3. Brad Locke Says:

We’re at the first media timeout, MSU up 9-2 with 15:44 left in the half. Rebels didn’t score until the 16:35 mark.

  4. Brad Locke Says:

    Sorry, 12-2.

  5. benzadawgfan Says:

Look out Brad AK is mad! Don’t get too close, you may be mistaken for a cabbie! Go DAWGS!!!!

  6. goldendawg Says:

I’m pretty mad… I scheduled myself off today so I could watch. But I had to miss work all week due to icestorm and now I am having to keep up with the gametracker. Not cool.

  7. Brad Locke Says:

Ravern Johnson already has 10 points, and MSU’s up 22-12 at 10:50/1st half.

  8. farley662 Says:

  9. goldendawg Says:

Thanks… PC at work is old as dirt with a slow connection. But i’ll give it a try.

  10. Brad Locke Says:

A 16-2 run gave Ole Miss its first lead, 28-27, but MSU now on top 29-28, 4:22/1st half.

  11. ukrainedog Says:

I’m tracking from an iPod today, don’t know why my computer won’t connect. So keep the updates regular and colorful!

  12. buzzardroostus Says:

    44-40 MSU w/ 16:42 left in 2nd half.

  13. Brad Locke Says:

MSU is up 44-40 at 15:59/2nd half. Varnado having trouble finding the ball, has just 4 points. Not much penetration for MSU’s guards, either.

  14. Brad Locke Says:

MSU has one field goal in the last 5 minutes, trails 48-45. Varnado is becoming more active. Notable: Neither Elgin Bailey nor Brian Johnson have checked in today. Kodi Augustus has, though.

  15. Brad Locke Says:

Ole Miss up 52-48 at 8:21/2nd half. Seems to me the Rebs are doing a better job than State of setting good screens and getting clean looks.

  16. ukrainedog Says:

I’m getting livestats now. Looks very tight.

  17. buzzardroostus Says:

This is so typical. If we can’t make outside shots we look horrible. Why doesn’t coach bench people for taking stupid shots? Our team has no clue what to do right now. If we don’t get hot from the outside we’ll loose by 10 points. We need Bost to take over the offense and get our team to move the ball around more.

  18. carwwest Says:

i hate barry stewart with a passion….he is just terrible in many aspects of the game….im glad agustus is getting some minutes…

  19. carwwest Says:

    take him out FOREVER!!!!

  20. buzzardroostus Says:

Somebody needs to take Stansbury out of the game.

  21. buzzardroostus Says:

BL, you’re exactly right. Ole Miss is actually running a team offense. Just think what Kennedy could do with our talent.

  22. buzzardroostus Says:

I can’t watch this anymore. We are getting out-COACHED, out-played, and now out-hustled.

  23. Brad Locke Says:

Ole Miss leads 63-55 at 3:35/2nd half. The Rebels are getting it done inside and out. Very balanced scoring.

  24. carwwest Says:

we dont have an offense…i cant stress enough how bad barry stewart is….i will say ole miss is throwing up everything and they are falling….but the fact remains we just dont look like a good team….

  25. ukrainedog Says:

taking more shots, making more shots. We must be wearing turbans.

  26. Brad Locke Says:

Ole Miss just turned it over, but leads 64-60 with :24.7 left.

  27. Brad Locke Says:

With :18.1 left, MSU’s within 64-62. Ole Miss hasn’t scored since the 3:35 mark.

  28. Brad Locke Says:

Final: Ole Miss 67, MSU 63.

  29. Brad Locke Says:

Ole Miss’ first win at The Hump since 1998.

  30. leeearl Says:

This lose is unacceptable……..we let them back in the game, then got out-coached in the 2nd half, Rick should have stopped the green light on the 3-pt shot and kept taking the ball inside….whatever, this game pisses me off to no end…

  31. buzzardroostus Says:

So what if play well the rest of the season and win the West and the SEC. Because if we make it to the NCAA tournament we’ll play like we did today regardless of whether our opponent is North Carolina or the winner of some no name conference. We’ve got so much talent it’s ridiculous. But Stans has no clue what to do with it.

  32. lollipopkid Says:

Out-coached and Out-hustled. Not a winning combination. How do you not bench Bost and Stewart after all of those awful threes? How many airballs do you have to shoot before Stansbury pulls you? Hell, I can shoot airballs. And for the love of everything pure, please stop putting Riley Benock in. He gets torched on defense every single time. He is awful. Billy Begley 2.0. I think Huertas and Kennedy were laughing out loud every time he subbed in.

  33. fun2bmaroon Says:

I believe after this contest, JB can now be considered a prophet…..

  34. leeearl Says:

Elgin and Brian were suspended, I was wondering why, I understand discipline, but crap we really needed that SEC win which would’ve put us sole SEC West possesion, we need every win we can get here on out….
