Signings Complete … We Assume

I’ve settled in at the Bryan Building, and I have posted below the updated list of Mississippi State football signees. Thanks again to Todd Vinyard for all his excellent help.

Safe to say that today was a success for Dan Mullen and staff. He received 21 National Letters of Intent over the fax machine, which is now soaking its ink cartridges in ice. Add in the already signed junior college guys, and the 2009 MSU recruiting class has 27 members. No surprise reversals, and the Bulldogs even got a pleasant surprise with WR Brandon Heavens, a 3-star recruit from Bessemer, Ala., joining up. The former Auburn commit visited MSU last weekend. We certainly could have a surprise or two late in the process here, but the class appears set.

Mullen can grant only 25 scholarships this year, so at least a couple will go juco or get grayshirted. By the way, high schoolers Cameron Lawrence and Sam Watts have already enrolled at State along with the six juco guys. Now, here’s a position-by-position breakdown of the class:

• Wide receivers: 7

• Defensive backs: 5

• Running backs: 4

• Defensive linemen: 4

• Linebackers: 2

• Offensive linemen: 2

• Quarterbacks: 1

• Punters: 1

• Kickers: 1

And finally, the updated list (more analysis later):

So now what am I supposed to do for the next 72 days?

  2. Signing Day: Take that USC, Te’o to Notre Dame « More with Gore Says:

  3. bigdraws Says:

    • Offensive linemen: 2

Should I be concerned about that?

  4. imabulldog Says:

Maroonwhite, you can come over to my site and vote…that’s what you can do! 🙂

  5. tebmsu97 Says:

Are there any names actually floating around about possible late additions to this class?

  6. imabulldog Says:

I agree Draws, He must know something we don’t

  7. db33 Says:

bigdraws, we’ve got plenty of OL talent waiting in the wings. It’s a LOT easier to be an OL in Mullen’s system where they are only asked to hold their block for a few seconds. It’s based more on misdirection, technique, and angles than raw power.

OUTSTANDING FIRST CLASS by Coach Mullen, just outstanding. He held on to all, and I mean ALL, of our top recruits, and added more to the mix. Heavens had offers from ALA, AUB, TN, KY, great signing day grab.

Tyler, McPheenom, Bumphis, Cox, Boyd, on and on. Best class I can recall the Bulldogs getting.

    Looking at stars, we had:

    8 – 4*
    15 – 3*
    4 – 2*

I can recall where 2* recruits made up over 50% of the class. That was the case most every year. Not anymore.

The EIGHT 4* is DOUBLE what the school to the north signed today even though they are fresh off a 9 win Cotton Bowl season.

TSTTN also only landed ONE top 10 instate player. We landed FIVE, and 4 of the top 5.

    Can you say DOMINATION?

    GO DOGS!

  8. maroon1white Says:

draws, db33, is right we signed 2 OL’s today. We redshirted 3 last year (including Hardy who was moved over from DL by Croom) and still have the guys that started all last year. Its shaping up to be awesome in ’09.

The SEC West could be taking over to be the more powerful division. If you compare the two sides top to bottom. Either way the SEC as a whole is going to be dominate next year and going forward.

  9. jcdawgman18 Says:

We’re only gonna actually see 24 of those guys next fall, barring some miracle. Darius Slay, Rico Sanders, and Madrecas Hood are all sign-and-place prospects.

  10. Brad Locke Says:

Honestly, I don’t know anything about some “surprise” signings. You just never know with high school kids. But MSU appears to have gotten everyone they were after.

  11. sfwmdawg Says:

Still, would be nice to see a couple of lineman come in. The injuries have riddled the O-line in the past. You can never have to many. Love the speed we got this time. GO Mullen!

  12. RoastBeef1 Says:

I think this offense will be designed around quick passes. State got a lot of speed in this class and those quick slants, drags, screens, etc. will probably be what they try to use. That’s why I wouldn’t be that concerned over them only getting two offensive linemen. Great class for Mullen in his first year.

  13. maxdawg Says:

ESPN radio even gave Mullen some props for getting some much in state talent. They said there was a lot of talent here. LETS PROVE IT!!!!!

  14. maxdawg Says:

Pardon me so much talent that is.

  15. carwwest Says:

i think we will see more of an emphasis on OL and maybe LB in the next two years just because we signed a ton of receivers this year and a ton of DL last year….but if tyson is our QB, you can bet that our offense will be almost nothing but short passes and screens…

take it for what its worth (nothing)….but when mullen was on espnu, he said tyler reminded him a lot of alex smith so our offense would probably look more like the old utah’s offense with smith….i understand he wants to design the offense around his future QB but could this mean he wants to play russell early instead of redshirting??

  16. ericintupelo Says:

Hate to say it but Ole Miss’s classes are ranked higher than ours on scouts and rivals so they will be bragging about that but as long as we beat them on the field I could care less.

  17. mississippipitbull Says:

You’ll also noticed that they have a lot of 2 stars. The noxubee trader gave them a boost and some OL dude from VA. Hadn’t heard nothing with this OL being that he’s 5 star. He signed with OM and they gave him a boost to 5 star to get their ranking higher than ours. They probably paid the Scout guys just to make sure their rank was above ours. They’re paying everybody else. 37 commits outof no where huh? They gonna go broke trying to outdo us at STATE. They did get Patterson though. 37 commits!!! We’re going to get some of their decommits. They can’t have them all. Most of their recruits have trouble with school anyways so we’ll see who they really get.

  18. carwwest Says:

i dont know about paying people but i assume they are ranked higher because they pulled in cotton, patterson, and massie…last i looked, our average star rank per player was still higher but who knows…37 is ridiculous…i dont understand how the kids know that going into it and still sign the papers….

  19. JB Says:

Ole Miss football: One nasty group. “They probably paid the Scout”. “They’re paying everybody else”.”Most of their recruits have trouble with school anyways”. “we beat them on the field I could care less”.
They should be investigated and before another egg bowl because we definitely don’t want to see another 45-0 game.

  20. mathistondawg Says:

Ole Miss has a great group. Both Mississippi SEC teams have top 20 classes. AND, it looks like most of the talent in the state stayed home this year.

  21. mississippipitbull Says:

What’s wrong JB? “You can’t handle the truth?” Yeah I said it. I heard Nick Saban knows that Pat Patterson Sr. got a signing bonus from OM and he’s looking to report it. It was funny so I thought I’d give my Dogs something to laugh at. OM is a laughing matter. We’re happy with our 09 class. Get a life Rebel flag flying trash worshiper. Trash being those rebels.

  22. JB Says:

With that statement above, that ole rugged and ragged flag with that skeleton with sunshades will fly again, and very soon!!!!

  23. imabulldog Says:

Heck, I’m a bulldog (excuse pun), but I love the that Rebel Flag!!!

  24. imabulldog Says:

Just for the record, I have no clue why people are offended by that flag, just like the t-shirt goes: “if you are offended by this, you need a history lesson.”

  25. farley662 Says:

Ima, you wear your X and I’ll wear mine.

  26. imabulldog Says:

Oh I will, loud and proud!!!! 😉

  27. mississippipitbull Says:

Wear what you want I could care less. With that history lesson lets make a black history lesson since its black history month. I wonder if they talk about the confederate flag in black history classes and what it stands for. Ima go out and ask a couple of black folks what stands for and means to them.

  28. mississippipitbull Says:

Why don’t we walk around with tattooes of it? I don’t know. Why do you?

  29. imabulldog Says:

I did that yesterday in Sociology class, my kids couldn’t explain it, they just said its racist, but with no explanations! People are so uneducated on the Civil War and that era-it makes me sick.

For your information pit, you might want to know that the rebel flag was never flown on any ship involved in the buying, selling, or shipping of slaves. The North was just as racist as the South… So which flag was flying on those ships??? Oh…the one that’s hanging in every classroom in America. Which I love old Glory just as much, but apparently OUR new president doesn’t, since he openly expressed his previous attendance at many a flag burnings.

Fly it high, it’s my Southern culture and I love it!

You probably don’t even know where the ‘X’ came from? It comes from St. Andrew’s Cross, the same found on Scotland’s. It represents so much more than the “crap” that has been assigned to it.

  30. imabulldog Says:

It’s a Race Card issue and we all know it, I’d love for you to meet a Black Marine from Ohio, who has one flyin high in his front yard here in Memphis

  31. bigdraws Says:

    Boom, roasted!!

  32. bigdraws Says:

This black guy doesn’t have a problem with it.

  33. Braves Dawg Says:

or the black guy in Oxford that dresses up in Civil War attire and carry’s the flag around the square.

  34. farley662 Says:

Or Jesse and Al. Oh wait, damn.

  35. JB Says:

When I was in the USAF we were orders to attend Black History orientations and stuff. That time took time away from us warriors who were out there trying to kill those commies who had an intention to take over our country and subdue us. We were united force, no color barriers,Or I did not see many, but we were just kept being reminded by the political correctional group that we were.

  36. Brad Locke Says:

That dude is still in Oxford? I did a story on him for the Eagle about 8-9 years ago. I believe it was the first time he’d done that (or at least, I was the first to write about it). I forget his name, but he was an interesting fellow.
