MSU to Retire Howell’s Jersey

by

From the official press release:

Mississippi State will proudly retire former great Bailey Howell’s No. 52 jersey at halftime during Saturday’s game against Arkansas at Humphrey Coliseum in a ceremony unveiling a banner that will permanently hang in the rafters showcasing his name, number and the years he played for the Bulldogs.

Howell, the first MSU basketball player to have his jersey retired, starred for the Bulldogs from 1957-59 and was a two-time All-American and three-time, first-team All-SEC selection.

During his illustrious career for the Maroon and White, Howell scored 2,030 points and grabbed 1,277 rebounds. While his point total is second all-time, his rebounds remain a school record.

He also continues to hold career records for scoring average (27.1), rebounding average (17.0), free throws made (682) and free throws attempted (892), while the 47 points he scored against Union in 1958 and the 34 rebounds he had against LSU in 1957 remain unmatched.

dawgface, I go back to those days of Bailey Howell and that great Miss State team that he plyed on. Guess Richard Williams was on that team. If memory serve me correctly, I think that State was undefeated that season.

I was stationed at Columbus AFB at that time and we lived in Aberdeen on West Meridian Street. Listen to the State basketball games on radio. That was about all we had to do. TV was Columbus and Tupelo, those stations you could receive with rabbit ears. Ole Miss football was the other Mississippi great team of that time. Columbus AFB had the B-52s and KC-135. One night I was call out to duty due to one of those B-52 and KC-135 mid-air crashes up over Kentucky. That B-52 was very heavy, very heavy loaded. One sad thing was that I personal knew some of the crew that didn’t not make it.

Hey Brad, Heres an idea for you. Sometimes you should have a contest for the bloggers. Every so often put the names in hat, draw 1 and take that person to the ballgame you are going top cover. Might be something to look at.

  7. sfwmdawg Says:

Oh, I think its been to long, we should have done this earlier. He deserved it.

  8. The Prez Says:

That wouldn’t work for everyone on here, sfwmdawg. Bird is not allowed within 500 ft. of any school.

  9. sfwmdawg Says:

If he is bad enough, he would fit right in at a AL football game or Kentucky b-ball. By all means anywhere on the OM campus.

    Good idea sfwm!

I remember when Bailey came back to campus the year after he had graduated and played in the “old timers” vs a good 1960 Bulldog team. Back then they still jumped for the ball. The MSU center threw a hip into Bailey. Just enough to throw Bailey off the tip so MSU could control it. Bailey didn’t say anything or do anything until the next jump ball. When they went up, Bailey threw a hip into the MSU center and knocked him completely out of the jump circle. Whole gym (old cracker box gym) broke up laughing. Those were the good ole days.
