LSU No. 1 … MSU No. 2?

WordPress sucks. I had this entry finished, and it disappeared when I tried to publish it, so let’s try again. *sigh*

It’s been said, and I think it’s well-founded, that the best two teams in the SEC reside in the Western Division: LSU  and Mississippi State. Let’s start with the records. LSU is 10-1 in league play, while MSU is 7-4. Four teams in the East have a 7-4 mark and are tied for first place: Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee. And check this out: MSU is 4-0 against Eastern Division teams, while LSU is 3-0. (Against the rest of the West, the East is a combined 14-5).

Now, consider recent results. MSU took LSU to double-overtime last Wednesday before succumbing, 97-94 (no doubt that played a factor in State’s loss to surging Auburn three days later). On Saturday, Georgia beat Florida. On Tuesday, Vanderbilt beat Kentucky. Last night, MSU beat South Carolina and Ole Miss whipped Tennessee.

What’s tough to figure out is if all this chaos in the East is good or bad for MSU’s NCAA tournament hopes. On the one hand, the Bulldogs have a chance to finish the regular season with the second-best SEC record. On the other hand, these sudden struggles in the East are making the SEC look weaker by the day, and when that happens, the national consensus seems to favor teams like Florida and Kentucky by default.

There’s another round of crucial games this weekend. What sort of wackiness will we see next?

Saturday’s games:
Tennessee at Kentucky, noon (CBS)
Mississippi State at Alabama, 2 p.m.
Vanderbilt at Florida, 2 p.m. (Raycom)
Georgia at Ole Miss, 4 p.m. (FSN)
Auburn at LSU, 7 p.m.
Arkansas at South Carolina, 6 p.m.

Not me! I don’t say that. I say that if Ole Miss runs the table, they will be No.2 in SEC West and draw a bye in the SEC Tournment. State has a much harder road to travel and they cannot afford to stump a toe, if they do, probably Ole Miss is in.

Do say that LSU probably the best in SEC at this time.

Have to disagree, JB. If MSU “stumps a toe,” it’ll be Auburn that jumps up to claim our spot, not Ole Miss. MSU would really need to completely break that toe rather than just stump it for Ole Miss to overtake them.

Not to downplay Ole Miss, though. I think they’re a pretty good team with as good a shake in the SEC tournament as anyone else. I would have excepted Georgia, but after last season, I won’t be excepting anyone.

Auburn upsets LSU, Arky upsets USC…callin’ it right now 🙂

auburn has been playing out of their head as of late. upig is due… agree there, ima…

And btw, the fact that LSU just got their ranking and the fact that its 24th is bull! That’s just hating on SEC basketball. I mean they are like 22-4, it’d take Duke, Wake, and UConn 4 losses to even leave the top 25, LSU loses one and you watch-they are gone. Ridiculous that’s all

    My opinion on SEC teams:

LSU – has experience, talent, play excellent defense, and well-coached…

MSU – Our hardest opponents throughout the rest of the season are beating teams in the West, not beating Florida at home, if Tennessee plays as a team it’ll be a close game….if we continue the intensity in the 2nd half of the USC game, shoot like the 2nd half of the Arky game, play as a team like the KY game, we will be in the NCAA tourney…

The rest is in no particular order:

USC – has a lot of talent and coached well, Downey will probably lead them to a SEC East title…

Tennessee – could easily be the 2nd best team in the SEC, they have a buttload of talent, but they play as individuals vice a team…….bad coaching – great recruiting

Ole Miss – coached very well….they’re intensity level is equal to the frustration of their coach not having sex….. to keep winning with the starters he’s lost is a good aspect of Kennedy

Florida – has Nick….has ESPN on their side because they won NC a few years back….

Kentucky – has PP and Meeks, that’s it, contain them, win the game….bad coaching….has ESPN on their side because of their tradition

Vanderbilt – the same level as KY, less talent, better coaching…

Arkansas – who knows, can beat who some consider the #1 team in the nation, has great coach, many thugs, will probably spoil SEC West teams chances of taking our SEC tourney bye…glad we’ve won our two against them…

Alabama – has talent, no coach, normally will not give you the full 40 minutes required to finish a game

    Georgia – see Alabama

“Ole Miss – coached very well” you got that one right. Coach Kennedy and outstanding coach and recruiter. Three of his first line players went down to injury at the beginning of the season. With his outstanding coaching ability, he has taken this injured Ole Miss team laden with freshmen and inexperienced players to a successful season. They are setting in a very good position to win a bye in the upcoming SEC tournment, and in that as #2, in the SEC West. Ole Miss controls its destiny for the remaining of this season, so does Miss State. One will fail – one will prevail. My vote goes to the Rebels, I will not ask for yours..

The game with the Gators will be a big one. Florida is already at the 20 win mark, and they get a lot of attention nationally.

A win in Knoxville would be big too, even though the Vols are sliding.

Can’t afford slipups against AUB at home or at ALA. The Tide stink, we must take care of bad teams wherever the game is played.

JB, sorry I have to disagree with you on this as well. I dont see OM oveting our Bullies. I give them alot of credit, but the one question I have is, Have they started their run to soon. With a depleted bench due to injury. One major injury could send them into a tail spin.

LSU is clearly #1 in the SEC and I think seriously underrated nationally. #2 is up in the air. MSU’s certainly in there along with Auburn, KY, TN, USC, and Florida. I wouldn’t count Ole Miss out either. MSU needs to take it one game at a time. We need to be totally focused on Alabama right now because that’s the next game and therefore the most important game. If we don’t play very good Saturday, we’ll lose. Alabama may not have a very good record, but they’re still a capable team that will show up and play hard. We’ll know more within just the next couple of weeks as to who’s #1 or #2. Right now we just need to take it one game at a time.

gotta win the SEC tourney to make it, no doubt. these individual games left in the regular season don’t really matter on their own. What matters is building momentum for that SEC run. This is true for pretty much the whole conference this year. The SEC tourney is pretty much a “lottery” for the teams in our lg this year. 1(LSU) exception controls their own destiny.

all that said, I’ll be pulling for whatever SEC team(s) make it to the tourney. for our Dawgs, hope we have something more than just bracket day to cheer for. Would rather go NIT route than 1 and done. Like football, those extra practices and extended seasons during bowl/tourney season go a long way toward the next season (Liberty Bowl not included)… Just hope we have someone to pull for without holding my nose (lsu, om) in the big tourney

  12. imabulldog Says:

I think the UF game good play into our favor. I see Bost and Stewart shutting down Calathes and Hodge (whinny baby-pretty boy), and I think Swat can hold their big guy down low to 10 or so. I like the matchup…surprisingly enough, its the small teams that bother me this yr. The seem to play the same game we do, but better. But, player by player-I think we can get that one.

I also hope we beat UT. That’s gonna be two hungry teams when we face of in Knoxville. One team trying to make up for being completely overrated, the other tryin to get in to the Prom 🙂 We’ll see…

    ‘could play’ sorry
