Ricky Bowen to Start Opener

Junior right-hander Ricky Bowen will throw the first pitch of the John Cohen era tomorrow night. Bowen will take the mound for the 5 p.m. season opener against Northern Illinois. Last season, he led the Bulldogs in starts (13), innings pitched (73.1) and strikeouts (64). However, Bowen had a 3-6 record with a 7.61 ERA.

Cohen has said that he will probably have six different starters in the first six games, but Bowen seems poised to be a leading candidate for the regular weekend rotation. Two years ago, he was 5-2 with a 3.00 ERA, all in relief.

And this is notable: As a head coach, Cohen is 9-0 in season openers.

If I’m not mistaken, we led off last yr by gettin WAXED by North FL, a team we play this weekend. Hopefully we can smoke them like they did us, and get our season off to a good start.
