No Baseball; Bad Basketball

UPDATE (9:40 p.m.): I missed a call back from Nicholls State coach Chip Durham, but he said in the voicemail, “We did not play the game because of field conditions. We did not forfeit that game.” I in turn had to leave a voicemail for him. Still no call back from Cohen. This is indeed a strange little situation.

UPDATE: Despite Nicholls’ State attempt to call this a cancellation, Joe Dier confirmed to me that “it was a forfeit. Trying to find out how we handle it.” If it’s ruled a forfeit, then MSU gets a win and improves to 8-1. Cohen has not returned a voicemail.

As you’ve likely heard, today’s baseball game between Mississippi State and Nicholls State, scheduled for 1:30 p.m., ain’t happenin’. The Colonels forfeited, and I’m still trying to find out exactly why. MSU team spokesman Joe Dier said no specific reason was given for Nicholls’ forfeiture. State beat the Colonels twice yesterday. MSU coach John Cohen said, in a press release, “Our team was ready to play and our players and coaches were dying to play. I feel like we missed out on a perfect opportunity to play.” The Bulldogs instead are holding an intrasquad scrimmage at 2. Their next game is Thursday, the first of four against Hawaii – in Honolulu. Lucky!

On the basketball court, the Bulldogs might as well have forfeited their game Saturday. As coach Rick Stansbury said after the 76-58 loss to Auburn, “When you don’t play hard, you’ve got no chance.” At 17-12, 7-7 in SEC play, you can forget about an NCAA at-large berth. But, there’s always Tampa. Two regular-season games remain before the SEC Tournament (March 12-15): Wednesday vs. Florida, Saturday at Ole Miss.

Don’t forget, the Lady Bulldogs (20-8, 7-6 SEC) wrap up their regular season today at Alabama (13-15, 1-12). The SEC Women’s Tournament begins Thursday in North Little Rock.

Sounds like Nicholls is singing a different song. This is what they have on their Athletic website:

The Colonels host William Carey Tuesday night

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Sunday’s baseball game at Mississippi State, slated to start at 1:30 p.m., has been canceled due to snow on the ground in Starkville.

Field and weather conditions caused coaches and officials to make the decision to cancel the final game of the three-game series.

The Colonels return to action Tuesday, hosting William Carey at 6 p.m. at Didier Field.

    So, what’s the Real Story???

Indeed they are. I’m trying to figure out the deal.

Well we all know good and well that any snow that might have been on Dudy Noble would not have been reason to cancel a game. That field drains too well and is too well-maintained for that. I’ve sat through several torrential downpours and watched them get the field dried enough to continue play after. I know that a little snow isn’t going to cause problems.

Besides, if “coaches and officials” made the decision, you’d think MSU would have known about it, unless it was just the Nicholls State coaches, in which case that’s pretty much how you define “forfeit.”

    Coach C is representing!

BTW, I’m still wondering how we got pistol-whipped by Auby…twice

Sounds like to me that the Nicholls State coach was a little tired from yesterday. Anyway, I am very surprised by the start of the baseball team, very impressive in my opinion.
