MSU-LSU: Official Game Thread

by

LIVE FROM TAMPA

For the third time since 2002, MSU and LSU square off in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament here at St. Pete Times Forum. The Bulldogs and Tigers played each other in the ’02 and ’03 semis, with State victorious both times. MSU won the whole shebang in 2002 but lost in the 2003 final.

So what can a win mean for MSU today, beyond a berth in the title game? Perhaps nothing more than a better NIT seed. Because NCAA bracketology experts like Jerry Palm aren’t giving the Dogs the time of day. But a win will give them a chance to earn the automatic berth Sunday against the Auburn-Tennessee winner. First things first, of course, and that’s trying to beat LSU, which has defeated State twice this year.

Here are the basics:

TV: Raycom; live streaming on ESPN360.com.
XM: Channel 199.
Series: LSU leads 103-92.
Last two meetings: LSU, 97-94 (2OT) on Feb. 11 in Starkville; LSU, 81-57 on Jan. 21 in Baton Rouge.
Coaches: MSU – Rick Stansbury (229-127, 11th year); LSU – Trent Johnson (185-127, 10th year; 26-6, first year at LSU).
Notes: LSU is seeking its first SEC Tournament title since 1980. … Last time MSU and LSU met in the semifinals was 2003, with the Bulldogs winning 76-61. … MSU is shooting 49.3 percent from the field over its last four games. … State’s Jarvis Varnado has 152 blocks this season, five shy of Shaquille O’Neal’s SEC single-season record, which Varnado tied last year.

Why does espn 2 show sec tournament and showing lacrosse?

  2. Brad Locke Says:

Six early points for Stewart, including about a 25-foot 3-pointer. MSU leads 11-7 at the first media timeout (15:41).

  3. bigcowbell Says:

    found it

  4. mathistondawg Says:

    SLOW IT DOWN GUYS!!

  5. mathistondawg Says:

We CAN win this one. Stewart and Swat are carrying the load so far. GO DOGS!!

  6. darkcooger Says:

Ouch, Kodi! That looked like it was a wicked knee twist. Glad to see him walk it off.

  7. Brad Locke Says:

MSU leads 18-17 at 7:46/1st half. Kodi Augustus fell backwards on the ball during a midcourt scrum moments ago, walked off gingerly. He appears OK, though. Varnado has 7 points, Stewart 6 for State, which is only 6 of 20 from the floor. LSU is 7 of 21.

  8. thespear Says:

not a bad half, we are up and i feel like we didnt get too much going against their D…. We gotta knock down the fts, Jv is 3/8, thats not like him but thats what happens when you play 3 days straight…

Come on Dawgs! Hope Barry does at halftime whatever he did yesterday!

  9. carwwest Says:

we have to start making some free throws…good to have the lead at the half though…by the way, these refs are just pitiful…even worse than yesterday’s….

  10. Brad Locke Says:

OK, the wi-fi is back, for now. Some quick halftime stats:
MSU scorers: Varnado 13, Stewart 8, Augustus 5
LSU scorers: Mitchell 9, Thornton 8, Temple 5

  11. Brad Locke Says:

MSU up 43-39 at the 13:43 mark. Neither team shooting well, but Phil Turner just drained a long 3-pointer.

  12. dadawg Says:

Thorton goes to the bench with 4…I wish Tas has 5

  13. dadawg Says:

    Great pass inside….Kodi

  14. Brad Locke Says:

MSU left five reserves on the floor for nearly 5 minutes. Jarvis Varnado is 3-for-10 at the free throw line. Odd. MSU leads 49-45 with 7:34 left.

  15. dadawg Says:

    Gooooooooooooooooooooo DAWGS!

  16. darkcooger Says:

Jarvis just got block #158, now the single-season SEC record! Go Jarvis, go!

  17. dadawg Says:

  24. darkcooger Says:

MAN! How awesome would it have been if Brandon Bolen’s half-court shot had gone down?

    Way to go, Dawgs!

  25. Brad Locke Says:

And that’s that, 67-57. Recap and reax coming soon.

  26. thespear Says:

Shout out to the doubters, State is in the championship game!

Thank you Stans, great coaching! Critics take note, please

  27. carwwest Says:

great win!!!….the refs were the worst i have ever seen but glad we pulled it out!!

  28. 2thdoc Says:

Heck of game by Stans. Substitutions, defense switches, and match ups were near perfect.
