Bulldogs Headed to Portland

As you’ve probably heard, Mississippi State was given a No. 13 seed and will play fourth-seeded Washington, the Pac-10 regular-season champ, on Thursday in Portland in the West Region. The Huskies are 25-8 and lost to USC in the Pac-10 tournament title game. Here is some reaction from Bulldog coach Rick Stansbury and a couple of his players.

• On the seed: “Thirteen seed is great compared to when we woke up to this morning. We’re happy just to be in it. We’re not concerned where we’re going, or who we’re playing. We’re very happy to be a part of it.”

• “We know Washington’s a veteran team, and a very talented team. But this time of year, everybody’s a good team. We’ve just got to find a way to be the best team a few more times.”

• “I think this experience we just went through, that’s a championship experience. The team last year had been through some championship experiences already, this one hadn’t. We just came out of a championship experience. That kind of environment, that kind of energy, that kind of one-and-done attitude, that’s all it was for us.”

Jarvis Varnado:

• “It’s just amazing, you know. We weren’t expected to win the SEC Tournament, coming in here and winning it and seeing our names across that board, it’s just a great feeling.”

Phil Turner:

• “We’re just happy to be here. We’re just going to go down and take the same attitude that we’ve been taking these last couple of games, and that’s just go down and play hard and play together.”

• “It’s been a real emotional day. A lot of ups and downs in the game. What more can you ask for? We won, we’re SEC champs, and getting in the tournament, that’s it.”

State got screwed on their draw.

With Slive as the selection chairman, I think it shows that he either doesn’t have any SEC loyalty or doesn’t have much sway with other selection members. Auburn should have gotten in.

How in the world is Arizona seeded higher than us? And Maryland?

It was the laziest atttempt to put the best 64 teams in tourney I’ve ever seen.

Slive has to step out of the room when SEC teams are discussed. Normal procedure.

Yeah, but does he come back in?

I still wouldn’t trade spots with LSU or UT.

13 is a little low, i thought we’d get a 10 or 11 but the perception of the conference as a whole is down so not surprised. AU didn’t get in and probably should have, very proud of this young team to hang in there and win the tourney…they did it the hard way. good luck to the dawgs in portland.

Slive said before the game that all the teams are in it’s just a matter of seeding. Makes me think they had state in already. That’s what the UT announcers were saying also. I don’t think we should have been but if you take him at his word what else could he have meant?

slive said on CBS that state winning the tournament, knocked somebody else out.

I was hoping for anything but an 8/9. The SEC got no respect this year. Can a 13 make the sweet 16? Absolutely!! This team can!!

  9. leeearl Says:

I think we got an excellent draw in Washington, they’re a good team, but they’re definitely beatable, one thing against them if you look at their schedule is the fact that they lost their first game to Portland @Portland, how ironic would it be if their last game of the year be @Portland 🙂

I think we get to UConn and once again, take down the #1 Huskies like 1996…..

  10. imabulldog Says:

Sounds good Leearl…not to be a homer, but I think teams will have some trouble matching up vs us.

  11. imabulldog Says:

I’d rather be the underdog in the 1st game of the tourney

  12. bleedmaroon Says:

I’m proud of this team. At the start of this season no one gave this team a chance and honestly I didn’t either. They stepped up and played like a veteran team in the tourney. Win or lose in the dance, this team has a bright future ahead of them.

13 seed is crappy, but the 2nd round game is against a lower tier team. better than getting a 1 or 2 seed in the second round (see last year).

    great game yesterday btw!
