On the Portland Links

by

Good morning from the fair city of Portland, Ore., and forgive the belated posting of this blog. Hey, I’m two hours behind you, but I’ll use Central times for everything, for your sake.

Here is that story I promised you about Jarvis Varnado taking on Washington’s Jon Brockman, a 6-foot-7, 255-pound senior. He’s called a “warrior” by one old coach, who says in this Seattle Times story that Brockman could play in any era (I think most good basketball players could, but hey). As good as Brockman is, the Huskies have gotten this far thanks to a true team effort, kind of like MSU.

The Detroit News offered its breakdown of the West Region, noting that State is not “a particularly gifted team offensively.” Well, it’s true that the Bulldogs rank 10th in the SEC in field goal percentage (43.5), but they’re fourth in 3-point percentage (36.3) and fifth in scoring (74.8). You decide.

So here’s the schedule for today: MSU’s session with the media starts at 2 p.m. (noon here) at the Rose Garden, then the Bulldogs hold an open practice from 2:45-3:25 p.m. I’ll also sit in on Washington’s press conference and watch its practice at 4:15. I’ll be filing a couple of stories for tomorrow’s Journal, and of course blogging like a madman. And of course, Twittering, which if you’re not signed up for, you need to. Follow me at bradlocke for annoyingly frequent updates.

PS: The MSU baseball team fell to Southern Miss in Pearl last night, 10-7.
